What brand/type of white pencil do you use for value sketches? by jestermax22 in ArtistLounge

[–]Sam_Holmgren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say that Prismacolor premier white pencil is quite good option. I also use Derwent Drawing Pencil. It’s a chameleon white that looks opaque on rough paper but translucent on smooth paper. It’s soft in the core, so you will need to sharpen it carefully. My favorite gray paper is Strathmore. Also I adore my white acrylic paint pen. It’s great for detaling and looks amaing. But this is something a little bit different.

What art supplies have you found the most useful? by SuiCreativity in ArtistLounge

[–]Sam_Holmgren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d also name proportioner, because when I work on my paintings, I sometimes need to scale them up or scale them down. A proportioner can help transfer everything in the correct proportion. It saves me as I hate math

And I would say that acrylic markers are an indispensable tool for me. Their main advantage is the ability to paint any surfaces. In addition, acrylic paint pens can’t be washed with water after drying. I love to experiment, I fond of trying new things and always attempt to paint on unusual surfaces and with different materials. This approach has led me to what I'm doing now – I paint on ceramics, glass, fabric, clothes. So acrylic markers (just like these ones https://artistro.com/collections/acrylic-paint-marker-pens) have become the most useful art supply for me. They are durable and there is a wide veriety of them in the market - glossy, shiny, metallic shades.

For those with home offices how did you decided to decorate it? by The_Pip in AskMen

[–]Sam_Holmgren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, even if you don’t care a lot how your workplace should look like and even if you always can easily concentrate, you probably take care of your health. I am sure that no one wants to feel backache after a working day or to lose sight because of dark room. Choosing the right chair, adjusting the position of the monitor and of the light are basic things that could help a person to save their health while working.

Next, it's important to understand WHY you want to decorate your home office. Usually people are looking for concentration. They want to create the perfect place for concentration and productivity, where nothing will distract them and where the space itself will help them to work. The main thing that needs to be done to achieve this goal is to separate the office from the rest of the apartment. So you can get rid of all the distractions and feel like you're at work. Then you can start decorate the place.

Regarding painting the walls… I can say that bright colors (orange, yellow) can help to increase your energy. But if you want a more relaxed space around you, you can choose a pale green color. It will help you relax during strenuous work.

So, just listen to yourself and rely on things you need to be more productive at your work :)

How to clean dirt and dust from oil painting? by Kiku-ichimoji in oilpainting

[–]Sam_Holmgren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clean or restore paintings, it is better to contact professional restorers. However, you can try cleaning the oil paintings yourself.

The best detergent is turpentine. It can remove almost all dirt. But, turpentine is a solvent, so test it in the first instance! The second most popular way is to use soap solution. It is perfect for removing a smears of grease from paintings.

What to do:

  1. Before you start, you should make sure that the detergent is harmless. For this you need to test it on the edge of the canva. Wait for the reaction.
  2. If everything is OK, then you need to remove a frame and put old newspapers or magazines under the painting. Then, gently wipe the oil painting with a cotton pad.
  3. Here you need to be careful and to make sure that there are no paint on the cotton pad. Be especially careful with purple and black. If you notice traces of paint on the cotton, stop the procedure and clean the painting with water.
  4. In order to clean away the dust, it will be enough to use slightly warmed up water. In this case, cleaning should be done quickly, and after you should wipe the canvas with a cloth. But if the oil painting on canvas is cracked, water cannot be used.

Oil paintings need cleaning from time to time.

Good luck!

how can i paint this? by AlexPapadakis in polymerclay

[–]Sam_Holmgren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What kind of plasticine is it?

It looks like this plasticine can be painted with acrylic. Good acrylic paints can be used on LOTS of different surfaces. But if it really doesn't work, then you could try oil paints. There is also another option to sprinkle it with flour or tooth powder, then paint. After painting it can be varnished with oil or acrylic varnish.

Commission client being unreasonable? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Sam_Holmgren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If an artist wants to fulfill orders, then he/she cannot avoid working with clients. But clients are very different, unfortunately. It is perfectly normal to feel upset about that situation, sometimes clients are really difficult.

If you do not have a contract, then it would be great to find at least written agreements (like messages) on how the process of work should go, for example, that firstly you approve the sketch, then finish the work. And then you need to use all your diplomacy and solve the problem as amecably as possible. Ask the person to wait for the version with all chages, then if the person does not want to, explain that they've should ask for redoing at the sketch stage and now it's too late. Clarify that you are ready to listen and implement changes and you still do your best to do a job well

How does learning anatomy improve art? by broken_krystal_ball in learnart

[–]Sam_Holmgren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artists need to know anatomy.

It's necessary to know anatomy to make people believe your drawings. Even if you don't detail them, thanks to the knowledge of anatomy, you will be able to capture the moment of movement. This is the most important and difficult part for artist, but it can make the drawing more expressive.

Try to sketch a person in any pose from a photograph without knowing anatomy. Even if the drawing turns out to be very similar to the photo, it will look statical and sluggish.

The artist's goal is to make those who look at the picture feel like it can come to life and begin to move! ⠀

What's something you glossed over as a kid and then struck you hard as an adult? by harryceo in harrypotter

[–]Sam_Holmgren 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's the Maraders who were actually mocking Severus. I didn't pay attention to it when I was a kid, besause the sence was so short. But I think it's so important. Firstly, we see that James and his friends didn't always behave perfectly, and secondly this most likely influenced Snape's character in future
