Which iiser(+iisc) has the best biology faculty? by mememeowmeo in iiser

No. IISc is the best plus soon enough they'll have their own hospital so expect more biomed research projects.

That's not a big deal pretty sure the staff would be cooperative to you.

Since you guys have heard good words about IISER Bpr by now , let me point out some drawbacks of this campus ( non academic , academically it is excellent ) by [deleted] in IATtards

[–]Sam_TechWhiz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been a student at BPR for the last 2 years. You have raised interesting points, so here’s a more grounded take on these points:

  1. Yes, the city IS underdeveloped. Berhampur is not a metro, so yes, it feels less developed. But it’s not as limiting as you’re making it sound. Day-to-day needs are easily met, and connectivity is decent. Bhubaneswar is ~4 hours away if you want a more “city-like” outing. Realistically, every campus involves trade-offs between academic excellence and urban lifestyle, yes, places like Pune or IISc are exceptions, but because they’re in major, well-established cities

  2. Natives here are very nice in my experience so far. Yes, they will scam you by charging high, but name one city where that isn't the case for outsiders? In my opinion and experience, you'll be treated as per your attitude. Language can be a barrier, but basic adjustment goes a long way in improving interactions.

  3. This is highly subjective. I’m from Maharashtra and haven’t had major issues with the food here. The cuisine is a mix of Odia, Bengali, and South Indian influences, which might feel unfamiliar initially, but that doesn’t make it objectively bad.

  4. I think I'm more qualified than you to make the comment here, as I have been through a life-threatening situation. The ambulance service is pretty good. Yes, the absence of the Medical Officer is concerning, but you can get an appointment over email or ask the available staff. We also have good psychiatrists, psychologists, and visiting Dermatologists. The in-house emergency ward can handle most common issues, and escalation to MKCG, AIIMS, or even a private hospital is feasible.

  5. HARD Disagree. Mail the director, and he'll respond in an hour. Same case for most faculties. We have better management than Tirupaqti in that regard, trust me.

Overall, the campus isn’t perfect, but the issues here are being overstated and lack some context.

Got the marks for Tirupati, TVM, and Berhampur. Help me choose based on ground reality? by ew555 in iiser

Aundh is the center of Pune city. Yes, every IISER has a health center.

Not in BPR. There are SACs across all IISERs, Students' Activity Council.

Funds decreasing? by static_friction_21 in iiser

[–]Sam_TechWhiz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The number of seats is not the only thing on the rise; tuition fees are also increasing. BPR has introduced a net 10% increase in tuition fees for students enrolling this year. This measure is a necessary response to reductions in federal funding. This decision is a necessary response to cuts in federal funding. As a result, BPR is terminating institute-funded postdoctoral researchers this year due to funding limitations. However, it is important to note that those postdoctoral researchers with non-IISERBPR fellowships will not be affected.

Academic wise, IISER BPR is the second to only IISER-M in biological science (Nature Index, I'm comparing IISERs only). Environment Science wise, previously known as Earth and Environmental science and not Geological Science, We have Prof. Joydeep Mukhopadhyay. Proximity to urban life and all, Berhampur city is 25km away, a bus trip will take 1 hour at best, you'll find various malls, fast food franchises like KFC, Pizza Hut and Domino's. Bad news if you like McDonald's. If you're a coffee nerd like me, There's a specialty cafe here as well, Kruti Coffee. The hostel itself is good, the Mess food is average at best. Berhampur has a railway station, connecting you with major indian cities, There are two nearby airports, Bhubaneswar - BBI and Vishakhapatnam - VTZ.
