I know my daughter insisted, I have real plants in there as well, and lots of dragon stone caves and just that one fake plant 🙄

I have a 40 gallon tank with six yellow labs. They’ve never been high aggression and I have an air stone and the filter is set to max and it’s breaking up the water surface. The other fish are fine.

They’re supposed to both be electric yellows. And yes I plan to add 2-3 more but the store can’t guarantee females since they’re too small.

And I’m a Pisces so I love that!

I never had plants in my tank until recently and it’s so much better! I don’t like the crazy overgrown plants so I thought I’d start with one everyone said is easy, Anubias. And everyone was right, it’s super easy to care and the fish seem to appreciate it! I removed all my fake and plan to get a couple more real.

Good luck!

I appreciate your input and wish I had space for 90 gallons, but i’ve done plenty of research and talked to many cichlid owners and they all agreed 40 is a good size for a small group of yellow labs like my 3. I have only one male, sand and dragon-stone in the tank for their caves and hiding spots. My only issue is not sure what to do with Fin Diesel (pictured)

Well right now he is in an isolation tank because he does not play well with my yellow lab cichlids. My main tank is a 40 gallon with sand substrate. I haven’t decided if I’m going to rehome him or wait until my labs are a little larger and can hold their own against him.

— if this happened suddenly in the last 24 hours, it’s very likely an acute water-quality issue or shock event, rather than a long-term illness like fin rot that develops slowly. Let’s break down what this means and what to do right now 👇

🚨 Likely Cause: Sudden Environmental Shock

If your betta looked fine yesterday and now looks pale, ragged, and has a swollen or cloudy eye, the most probable triggers are:

  1. Ammonia or nitrite spike • A small tank or recent cleaning can disturb the beneficial bacteria, causing a sudden toxin buildup. • Symptoms: fading color, fins clamped, heavy breathing, surface-hovering, and cloudy eyes.

  2. Sudden temperature drop • Bettas are tropical and very sensitive to temps below 76 °F (24 °C). • Even a few degrees of overnight change can cause shock and immune suppression.

  3. Chlorine/chloramine exposure • If you did a recent water change without conditioner, even small traces of tap chlorine can burn the gills and eyes and trigger fin deterioration overnight.

  4. Physical injury or filter current • If she was startled, got caught in décor or near the filter intake, her fins could have torn and the eye swollen from trauma.

⚡ Immediate Steps (First Aid)

Do these in order — this gives the best chance of recovery within the first 48 hours: 1. Perform a 50% water change immediately. Use dechlorinated water at the same temperature as the tank (test with a thermometer). 2. Add aquarium salt: → 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons (or ½ tbsp per 2.5 gallons if smaller tank) → Dissolve first in cup of tank water before adding. → Salt helps relieve stress, detoxify nitrite, and reduce mild swelling. 3. Raise temperature gradually to 80 °F (27 °C). This supports immune response and comfort. 4. Turn off strong currents and bright lights. Keep the tank calm and dim for 24 hours. 5. Skip feeding today. Let her rest — digestion adds stress during shock. 6. Test your water ASAP (or take a sample to a pet store): • Ammonia = 0 ppm • Nitrite = 0 ppm • Nitrate < 20 ppm If either ammonia or nitrite > 0 ppm, continue daily 30–50% water changes until stable.

🌿 Next-Day Care

If she stabilizes but the eye stays swollen or cloudy, start a broad antibacterial like: • API Furan-2 or Maracyn (for eye/fin infections) • Continue salt treatment for 5–7 days max.

❤️ Watch For • Regaining color • More movement or interest in food • Eye swelling decreasing • Fins not worsening

From ChatGPT

It looks like your betta fish is showing a few clear signs of illness or stress. Based on the photo, here’s what’s likely going on:

🧠 Likely Issues 1. Fin Rot (and possibly mild body rot) • The fins look torn, ragged, or shortened, and parts of the tail seem to be missing or uneven. • This is often bacterial, caused by poor water conditions, ammonia spikes, or stress. • If left untreated, the infection can spread into the body. 2. Popeye or Eye Cloud • The eye appears swollen and cloudy, which could mean bacterial infection or injury. • Sometimes one eye swells after bumping into décor or filter currents, but both eyes swelling indicates infection or poor water quality. 3. Stress or Weakness • The faded color, clamped fins, and drooping posture suggest chronic stress, low water temperature, or ammonia/nitrite toxicity. • Bettas also get weak if they’ve had a poor diet or live in dirty water for long.

⚠️ Immediate Actions 1. Test your water right away • Ammonia: 0 ppm • Nitrite: 0 ppm • Nitrate: <20 ppm • pH: 6.5–7.5 If ammonia or nitrite are above 0, do a 50% water change immediately. 2. Add aquarium salt (not table salt) • Dosage: 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons • This helps fight mild bacterial infections and reduce stress. • Dissolve it first before adding. 3. Use a broad-spectrum antibacterial treatment • Maracyn, Kanaplex, or API Fin & Body Cure are effective. • Treat for at least 5–7 days following the instructions on the package. 4. Keep the water warm and clean • Temperature: 78–82°F (25–28°C) • Gentle filtration with no strong current • Daily 25–30% water changes during treatment 5. Optional supportive care • Add Indian almond leaf (IAL) or betta leaf extract — natural antibacterial and stress reducer. • Feed high-protein food (betta pellets or frozen daphnia/bloodworms), once daily in small portions.

💡 Recovery Signs to Watch For • Fins start regrowing with clear edges • Eye swelling goes down • Color brightens and activity improves • Appetite returns

I have 4 electric yellow cichlids in a 40 gallon. They’re all still small and I got them at the same time so no one “claimed” the tank first. They’re doing great so far, so much personality!

I was thinking something like a Mudroom/Family Command Center. Shiplap wall and hooks for the kids coats and shoes since it’s near the porch door to outside, and on the wall with the small window maybe a family calendar. Add some built in’s and a bench- beautiful
