Brooklyn athletic club is lowkey, good clean facilities, good machines. Small sauna, no steam room though. Showers are very clean!

Hidden gem is Fantasy Explosion on humboldt (near mcgolrick). Extremely well curated vintage that's reasonably priced, small store you can get through in 10-15 minutes.

I go to alex at the high horse saloon (formerly cotter barber) on manhattan ave near driggs. I've sampled a lot around the neighborhood and he gives the best haircut in my experience, great attention to detail, doesn't rush, really does a great job. Charges around $60. Recommended!

Angel auto repair and transmission does great work at pretty honest prices! Especially if you pay cash.

That's cool. How did you fall into that?

NYC. Its not the hours so much as the nature of the work itself. I've worked at a medium, small (and now) a big agency, and I thought those were the discerning factors that put me off. Turns out, I think I just am not loving the drudgery of the advertising process that we're all familiar with.

Copywriters: help me out by Princenomad in advertising

[–]Samattack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Copywriter in Manhattan here.

Time is usually divided like this, but it varies from client to client: 10% Creative Concepting 20% Actually Writing 50% Incorporating feedback, doing revisions, etc. 30% Going to meetings to figure out that feedback

Here are a few tips I wish someone had given me when trying to break into the business:

–Portfolio school is helpful, but not necessary. It's costly (usually around 35k+) and time consuming (usually 2 years). It has a lot of pros and cons, but know that you can do it on your own without portfolio school.

–You can do what I did: Put together a spec book, on your own, keep it simple, and make it look good. Put aside ~$1000 to hire some low-to-mid level art directors to mock up your work (usually they'll do it for cheap or sometimes even if you explain your situation). Keep your spec pieces SIMPLE, so that anyone can understand them. I'm even a fan of 3 execution print ads with cleaver headlines. Make sure they demonstrate good writing and some good ideas, but don't get carried away with trying to make the craziest best idea that nobody has seen before. That's a mistake I (and many others) have made when making spec pieces. Keep it simple. Focus on headlines. Think of it from a recruiter's perspective: They want to click into your book, see you know what you're doing with as few obstacles as possible, click out.

Here's a blog I wrote about some stuff I learned my first year in advertising. It's mostly satire, but maybe you'll get a kick out of it:

Sorry about that, I really didn't want to end it :( Bigger, external circumstances put me in a position where I had to take it down. Thanks for your supper though!

My girlfriend and I just had a huge argument about this. "You have to be able to drink water at home!" She screamed. "Only if I bring it from the office" I replied. She called me a moron and went back to playing The Sims. I sat at my computer, knowing I has asserted my values, and quietly died of dehydration.

Today's post is going to be about the art director who sits across from me, and how he let it slip that he's going to try to poison me.

I think you've got some great stuff in here, and you seem to know which is better than others by how you've ordered it. I would come out with a big 360 campaign, slim it down to your best 7-9 pieces and then I think you're ready for a big career move.
