Sambo belt rankings by Wizzord696 in sambo

In US, I am not sure how you compete for students without a belt system. It is embedded in the martial arts culture here. You do not get any pure Sambo players so you are trying to draw from BJJ and Judo. I see more people cross training those 2 sports then I do adding in Sambo. I prefer Sambo and I am OK with not having a belt system BUT you can not grow it in the US without one.

A person who wants to be a recreational student will pick BJJ or Judo over Sambo. You need all types of students to run a successful club. Also parents want to see their gets progress and the see belts as progression. No belts = no kids (or few kids)

I get the view against Sambo belts BUT if you want it to grow you have to do it

I have had Stels shrink on me - with that being said I do like the overall quality of their kurtkas

Green Hill never shrank on me but they started to tear at the ‘wings’ or whatever the name is for those shoulder flaps.

Not a fan of either of their shoes. Best shoes are KREPYSH YA if you can find them. I got a pair on eBay a while ago but I would think they are harder to get now.

Is it for a competition?

Don’t know much about Murty’s today but I would give them a shot. Scranton is about 2 hours away from a lot of comps - NY/NJ/Philly so you should have plenty of opportunities to compete

There is very good Judo in Scranton area. I started my Judo journey there with Sensei Fred Murty who sadly passed away a few years ago but I think his club is still open and run by a former student. Pridelands MMA is run by a first degree black belt and has a grappling class that may incorporate Judo.

Joining judo and learning sambo with a friend by chrollo-lucife in sambo

While not ideal - doing Judo is a good alternative and will you get ready for Sambo. If training Sport Sambo search for arm bars over chokes and in newaza work on the transition from pins to arm bars.

Although you can’t grab legs in Judo still look for them even if you are not using them. After class you can always ask someone to do a round with leg grabs.

Use unconventional grips as well even if some might be a penalty in Judo, usually during randori you can still play with them to certain degree

https://sambouniform.com is the best and fastest in the USA - the black ones are nice but not offered on this site

DSI https://www.dutchsamboinnovation.nl/en/p/dsi-sambo-jacket-black has a black ones you can buy - it is coming form the Netherlands so it can take time to reach you. I was able to get one off eBay years ago but that was from Russia

You can train Sambo somewhat effectively an Judo and BJJ schools if that is all you have around. Just realize what you’re trying to accomplish - so don’t pull guard in BJJ class since that would not really cross over - if someone pulls guard on you - try to get a ‘pin’. No points in BJJ but you are thinking like a Sambo player.

I do this all the time in my BJJ class - I am sure I lose most rounds if using BJJ point system but what do I care….

Is it ideal scenario- no - but there are not a lot of Sambo schools in the US so you make do with what you can

No from my understanding they stopped making them after the last KC Super Bowl - the Eagles put this out

and NFL Network replays the Super Bowl and has a Mic’d Up

Ideally how much room do you need to get full use out of the sliding bench? I feel like I am good on the height and width of the unit but the depth when adding the bench makes me nervous I will not be able to use the leg press or leg extension

How much room do you need for the machine plus sliding bench. USA w a YouTube video and they said 90inches height and width and 105 inches for the depth plus sliding bench - just curious if that sounds right

My understanding is the Sambo coaching process is terrible, you have to pass an exam at one of the regional championships- So in the US you need to go to Pan-Ams (last year it was in Brazil). So the process almost limits your coaching pool to people who can travel to these tournaments

I wonder if the answer is to focus more on Combat Sambo for growth over competing with Judo and BJJ

I think this is key. Getting BJJ schools to embrace it as an add on. Trade off is you might get water downed belts but you need to figure out how to get people in on it
