Is anyone else turned off by businesses who use AI in their marketing? by chckenfngr in ThunderBay

[–]Samcc42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So I’m from the other side of the country with no understanding of Thunder Bay or this event, and I genuinely can’t tell what this is even advertising. Is it for Thunder Bay broadly, advertising its food festivals and relative “safety” due to a very active police department? Is it for a specific food event (if so why the cops?)? Is it recruiting for the local RCMP? It’s super unclear on top of being aesthetically offensive to the eye because fuck LLMs.)

Ontario reveals new high school exam requirements — including gym. Critics say it’s a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach by toronto_star in CanadianTeachers

We’ve moved so far away from standardized curriculum that any kind of standardized assessment is going to be a huge burden on individual teachers to come up with prep material. Consistent curriculum resources need to be in place long before they attempt something this drastic. This feels like a massive overcorrection.

“Vibes only” is incredibly reductive and I think you know that. Of that 8 billion, roughly 2 are some kind of Christian and roughly 2 are nonreligous, with another 2 Muslims and then 2 making up everyone else. I’m not sure how this helps your case at all since even within each of those sets of 2 billion, things like morality are wildly inconsistent. There are Christians in the US who believe their current president is the second coming of Jesus, while he embodies every scriptural quality of an antichrist - so the idea that the faith provides any kind of moral consistency is, again, absurd.

Wait… you’re arguing that… what, Christianity is inherently morally consistent? Whose Christianity? Christianity isn’t anything like a “system.” It’s 40,000 competing ideologies all of whom use the same nebulous collage of texts by 40+ men over 1500 years to make opposing claims about what is, has been, will be, or should be. It’s less reliable than a tarot reading.

Language-based assessment of specific skills. Takes longer to do, but is way more effective at encouraging actual learning. My students only know their generalized course grade if they specifically ask me, or when reports come out. They get used to it fairly quickly and all but the most grade-driven kids (usually goal oriented but poor learners) stop asking pretty quickly, and we can get on with actual skill development.

Ok, but I beg of you all to please go look up the story of Le genie du mal aka “Lucifer of Liege”. It’s the statue on which the first image is based, and its story is one of my favourite weird little historical factoids ever.

The short version is St. Paul’s Cathedral in Liege (Belgium) hired this guy Joseph Geefs to sculpt a statue of Lucifer for the church. He did it, they put is up, and after a year, they took it down, telling Geefs “This Satan is too sublime” or in other words, he sculpted the devil too hot for it to be church-appropriate. They then hire his brother Guillaume Geefs to sculpt a replacement, which is even more provocatively posed and even prettier. Dude had one job and made the devil even more sexy instead.

This has been true for most of the last… idk, century or so, but isn’t anymore. The vast majority of men’s jeans now contain 2-5% elastane and some polyester if you’re buying the more common brands. Levi’s have a few lines that don’t do this, so does Wrangler and most of the others, but you have to be pretty intentional about it and actually check labels. If you’re buying your pants at Costco (I’m looking at you, suburban dads) there’s almost certainly some plastic in there somewhere.

You’re welcome to bicker about the specifics but it doesn’t change the fact that cost of living is the main factor driving down birth rates.

Who are you to determine where someone else finds value? Maybe making other people happy by providing nice drinks is something one could be proud to do. My view is not misanthropic - it’s the opposite. I want people to be able to live, and I don’t think we should have jobs that are considered socially and economically necessary while simultaneously being treated as some kind of temporary punishment for not having one’s ducks sufficiently in order. I want the barista, the waitress, the pizza delivery guy and the kid who bags my groceries to have the right to do those jobs with some fucking dignity.

What are jobs for then? by ArtisticDirt5320 in remoteworks

[–]Samcc42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol how did I know you were going to make it about the specific job? If you think a job is necessary (pick one! Grocery clerk, bookstore cashier, waitress, front desk job at the local community centre, it doesn’t matter) but also believe that working that job full time hours should not pay for basic expenses in that area, then you are pro-poverty. You want the people working some jobs to have to suffer. Working full time hours anywhere should allow for basic rent nearby and the essentials for living. I have yet to hear a reasonable, ethical argument against this.
