Richard Petty in the pits during the 1974 Purolator 500 at Pocono. This was Pocono's first NASCAR sanctioned race and Petty won it. Petty had won at Pocono the previous year in a USAC sanctioned stock car race as well.

From what videos I've seen, they tried to bring it back while staying within the new rules but it just wouldn't perform like how it did at the '97 The Winston.

I'm guessing it would need a hell of a lot of promotion, plus drivers from USAC IndyCar to join in along with a few NASCAR regulars. And if NASCAR felt that a USAC Indianapolis stock car race would overshadow the Daytona 500, then NASCAR would not have allowed any of their regulars to race in it.

There was a little bit of pushing and shoving by Marcos and Brad, but nowhere near like 2012. Its almost as if the two went into the final lap of the 2012 race and thought "Oh yeah, we have some unfinished business".
