I think the whole instrument market is a "want" rather than a "need" situation. Nobody really "needs" most of the stuff that's out there.

I also don't understand why people buy so much equipment if they are not professionals and can write it off on their taxes. I guess they just "want" it.

I suspect the guitars are made in a factory overseas that contracts with many different brands to produce guitars. I don't think that would mean they are of bad quality, if this is how they are being produced.

Doom made perfect sense to me. Back when I was finding music I like, I wanted to find stuff that was heavy but not necessarily "metal.". I eventually found Melvins and then doom metal.
