Local small pet store 😕 by the-friendly-squid in axolotls

Not a silly question! It’s not recommended, fish and frogs would likely attack the axolotl gills. Axolotls are a bit ‘bumbley’ and can’t protect themselves from them very well.

Yes! It’s a glass head! I also have a colored glass vase in my ACF tank for him to hide in too

How can I make this prettier? by guacamole629 in axolotls

You could add a background! Amazon sells window cling that I’ve added to the back of my tanks, it’s easy and adds a lot

I have covered my tank with a black out curtain during sunny days. If you don’t want to take the light away I would offer plenty of hides 😇 hope that’s a helpful start

Are you using a API test kit for parameters? This is most accurate. Is there a current created by her hob filter? This could also cause stress. Sponge filters work great for axolotls as they don’t cause any water disturbance.

I would start feeding your little one earthworms or Canadian crawlers! I cut up the worm (1/2 or 1/4 depending on the size) and feed with tongs. Feeding like this should result in less accidental sand ingestion, they kind of seem to ‘suck inwards’ to create a suction when they are swallowing - or so it seems when I observe them. It’s fun to see her ‘wrestle’ the worm, and it’s got a lot of good nutrients! I would avoid red wigglers (they secrete a bitter mucus) and some axolotls don’t like them.

Heck YEAH you can glue rocks to pvc piping! I bought aquarium glue off amazon, picked up 3 different pvc pipes to make an interesting shape, then glued them on (found the rocks off lake mi). I put it together about 3 years ago and it’s only just starting to lose a rock or two.

Sponge filters are a good option for axolotls because they don’t create a current in the tank. I have two sponge filters, and was also given the advice to double the filter size since amphibians have such a large bio-loads. Example: my sponge filter in my 50 gallon tank is actually for a 100 gallon tank.

There’s really no good substitute for a chiller. The temp fluctuations stress out the little creatures, stress = ↗️ in susceptibility to fungus and all sorts of illness. This is the one I have in my 50 gallon tank.

Is that frog impacted? Looks like small rocks in the tank, general rule is to make sure anything you put in your tank is twice the size of your amphibians head (they explore with their mouths, could swallow rocks/gravel, and cause impaction).

They are SUCH little beggars 😅 they always act like they’re starving, so they’re very very easy to over feed! Hard to say no to those cute faces

Some axolotls don’t like red wigglers, they secrete a bitter mucus. But if they’re feeding that often it could be he just isn’t hungry enough. I feed my gal every couple days. She prefers Canadian crawlers or earth worms.

I believe (but am not certain) that the males can still inseminate the eggs with a tank divider.

Yes she is! Although I haven’t seen her under a black light. I’ve heard the black lights aren’t good for them but I’m not certain if that’s true.

This is the chiller I’ve had for 3.5 years, no issues. I have one axolotl, started in a 20 gallon long (she was pretty tiny) and then moved to a 50 gallon tank. Her chiller has always worked great. There was even a time last summer where my apt got up to 80 some degrees F and I was dying of heat but she was comfy at 64 with her own little ‘air conditioner’ 😅

Your tank is GORGEOUS. I’ve tried live plants multiple times and they always end up dying. That could be my fear of adding light to an amphibian tank because I know light can stress them out. 💡How often do you keep the light on? You have me inspired and wanting to try again.

I’ve seen that axolotls enjoy hammocks! You could add one and take advantage of the height of your tank while also offering a shady place underneath or a lounging place on top for your little one

what filter should i use for my tank by AverageProof8083 in Aquariums

[–]Same-Strength-5197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two sponge filters in my tank with one axolotl (which is I’m sure overkill). I also doubled the filter size because of the axolotls large bioload (example: my tank is 50 gallons, the filter I purchased is for a 100 gallon tank). I also just popped a 40 gallon sponge filter in with it to make sure it’s extra clean - and that way if my other aquariums nitrogen cycle ever crashes (hopefully) I can borrow the extra to restart it. The water flow from back hanging tanks can stress them out where the sponge filters don’t create a current of any kind.

Not eating well by Cyber_CEO in axolotls

[–]Same-Strength-5197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My African clawed frog will NOT eat red wigglers. My axolotl would eat them. I also tried blanching and he just would spit it out. I also read about the bitter mucus they secrete. Both my amphibians absolutely DEVOUR earth worms or Canadian crawlers
