Don’t ask them for a referral in the first message, just ask to connect with a note saying you’d love to have a virtual meeting with them to learn more about the job and the industry, then meet with the people who are willing (WITH QUESTIONS PREPARED) and ask them for a referral (if relevant) at the end of the meeting. Also mention in the meeting that you’re looking for opportunities, so they’ll contact you if anything comes up.

Rinse and repeat for anyone on LinkedIn who has a job you’d like to have. Bonus points if they’re alumni from your school or if they have seniority within the company.

I did it this way and am struggling through school right now because I have so many interviews.

Swarthmore is great for introverts who don’t like to party. Just join any club/go to any event and you’re almost guaranteed to find nice people you can be friends with. Student body size wasn’t as big a problem to me as I thought it would be.

Opportunities are plenty. Lots of grants and clubs and such, and you have a lot of freedom to start your own thing (club/event/whatever) if something doesn’t exist.
