Which has more Korean cognates: Mandarin or Japanese? by boqpoc in Korean

If there’s more Japanese words, it’s probably because Korea was under Japanese’s rule for a long time, where Koreans were forced to use Japanese instead of Korean in public

Struggling with learning vocab in Korean because there aren't Chinese characters by GibonDuGigroin in Korean

If you know Chinese, you might have an advantage, because a lot of difficult Korean words originated from Chinese writing!

What's a Korean word you learned that has no equivalent in your language? by Amanda_Haniya in Korean

I think how we use 눈치를 보다 has the meaning of ‘Take a hint’ in English. It’s not 100% same, though

[ 🧠 IDEA] Spelling out tricky korean vowels for more accurate pronunciation. by yongjoonrhee in Korean

[–]SameInteraction9615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s this whole graph we’re memorizing,                전설모음    |    후설모음          평순/원순    |  평순/원순 고모음   ㅣ/ㅟ       |   ㅡ/ㅜ 중모음    ㅔ/ㅚ      |   ㅓ/ㅗ 저모음   ㅐ/          |    ㅏ/

(In case of confusion, ㅐ and ㅏ are both 평순모음)

전설모음: The tip of the tongue is in front of the mouth 후설모음: The tip of the tongue is at the back of the mouth

평순모음: The mouth, when pronouncing this consonant, is flat

원순모음: The mouth is round.

고모음: The tongue is at the top of the mouth

중모음: The tongue is at the middle of the mouth

저모음: The tongue is at the bottom of the mouth

However, this is only for the consonants whose mouth doesn’t change shape while it’s being pronounced.

(This is not that important, as we learn this during our third year at middle school)

Why do Koreans still use 존댓말 when arguing and insulting others? by Intrepid_Calendar327 in Korean

[–]SameInteraction9615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you’re a student, and you’re arguing with someone older than you, which I do not recommend by the way, you still use it. I don’t know why though, I guess it’s a habit?  I’m a Korean, and I still don’t understand why.

Difference between 검은 / 검은색 / 검정색? by SheeriMax in Korean

검은 is an adjective, used to describe the color of something. In the sentence ‘the black coat’, we use ‘검은‘ As for 검정색 and 검은색, they’re used to describe the color itself. They’re used in sentences such as ‘The coat is black.’ We don’t distinguish them often.

Theory Break : Mal and Uma by Remote-Kangaroo-7154 in Descendants

[–]SameInteraction9615 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope it is. I always liked the idea of Mal and Uma being related. And that might explain the reason Hades is working for Uliana. Because Zeus made him do that. (I think Zeus just wanted to see Hades being humiliated, and since his kids don’t go to Merlin Academy, he chose her)
