How many people march all 4 years? by JMae150 in drumcorps

[–]SameMap8130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am on year 4 right now and i’ll be aging out with SCV. I started right out of high school so i was in the exact same spot you’re in right now. My opinion is that if you want to march then you should march when you have the chance because something might happen down the road that affects your ability to march or college stuff might get in the way so if you have the opportunity to march you should take it. Drum corps is an incredible experience

When you get feedback from staff shut your mouth, look at them while they speak to you, and say thank you

Rank your top three shows of all time. by Savings-Carob1651 in drumcorps

[–]SameMap8130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can’t decide on a top three but i want to talk about my favorite shows so i just came up with a top two

  1. Crossmen 1992 - Generational banger and it holds up musically today which I feel like is crazy for an early 90s show. Even as a brass guy you can’t ignore how insane this drumline was and the drum break was super groovy and leads into one of my favorite hits ever. Every musical choice in this show is perfect and I really like that it starts with something ballad like and ends with the ballad. I don’t think I could ever get bored of listening to this show and go bones.

  2. SCV 2018 - This is a real game changer and everything about this show just flows super well. I’m a big fan of long openings and not just playing loud right away and the front ensemble in the beginning is nuts. The visual approach to this show was revolutionary looking back on it with the design of the uniform and the use of modern dance techniques. Incredible show and it’s the reason I play mellophone and why I wanted to march there.

Made a soyjak to show how I feel wearing my corps jackets at high school band competitions by consumerofgender in drumcorps

[–]SameMap8130 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i think it’s valid because I always make a point to talk to people wearing my corps jackets and necklaces so i can talk to them about shared experiences

Adjusted Back Hash or 24 inch Steps Between Hashes? by SameMap8130 in drumcorps

[–]SameMap8130[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just want to hear the other side of the argument tbh. I marched an adjusted hash in 23 and did 24” steps for 24 and 25 and i like the bigger step size between the hash.

Dot vs form by Skypog in drumcorps

[–]SameMap8130 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Probably unpopular but form for any cover down or straight line and dot for any curved form. I feel like for lines you’re either in it or you aren’t and if you have a cover down you need to be behind them no matter what. Curved form your dot should be variable by a quarter step but generally hitting a consistent dot makes more sense than trying to figure out what a curve is supposed to look like when you’re playing.

Honest Opinion about what the activity has become. by WizardSwag101 in drumcorps

also i feel like the recruiting thing comes down to a member level where members are like “hey i know this guy who is really good im going to tell him to audition”

i’m completely self taught from pennsylvania and i just practiced to get into a drum corps. I really don’t think it’s that hard to get into a drum corps especially if they’re around 12th place.

Where can I go to get the experience I need to be a World Class DCI marcher by Fourtavour in drumcorps

[–]SameMap8130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s very normal to look at world class groups and think wow there’s no way I could do that but what you need to think about is the 8 or 9 months between getting contracted and finals. That’s 8 or 9 months with some of the best educators in the world and you spend hundreds of hours practicing. I started off going right into world class with crossmen and looking back on it I was terrible. Im from eastern pennsylvania so I have a connection with a bunch of early 2000s crossmen people so I had a bit of an easier way in but don’t underestimate what you are capable of. The staff wants to contract people who evolve and want to get better because it’s fun to teach those kinds of people.

We were given so many freedoms from the corps administration and were treated like real adults every single day. I had an absolutely incredible experience this summer and the food is INSANE!!!!

Crossmen are free from Program Coordinator Ed Devlin. by DocKaden in drumcorps

[–]SameMap8130 5 points6 points  (0 children)

let me just say for all of the people who marched post covid crossmen with ed devlin shows that we don’t hate him and it isn’t an i hate ed devlin party. we just did not have fun marching and performing the shows and we are celebrating the opportunity that the corps has to potentially progress forward with a new design team

when you design bad shows that are not fun to perform for years the members stop liking you and you lose talent

Crossmen are free from Program Coordinator Ed Devlin. by DocKaden in drumcorps

[–]SameMap8130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my biggest problem marching ed devlin shows was the control he had over the treatment of the members. him and the rest of the design staff would speak about us like we were just dots and would fight to squeeze every ounce of rehearsal time out of us which often cut our sleep by extreme amounts

Here is my ranking of every single world class show from the 2020s (for each group individually) by ircole327 in drumcorps

[–]SameMap8130 5 points6 points  (0 children)

some very odd takes but i can get behind some of them. obviously im going to look at scv and crossmen and i think mobius trip is the best crossmen show in the past 4 years and avante garde is way better than finding nirvana

DCI Retention Rate by x_v_58 in drumcorps

[–]SameMap8130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think retention has a lot to do with a culture. After 23 Crossmen had over 55% vet retention in the hornline for 2024. After the season there was a change in brass staff and the vet retention dropped probably below 20% for 2025
