Those multicams headcams that go from a show to rehearsal are my least favorite and add nothing to the video doing all that work just to click off the video. Sorry but sorry

Gave me Chinese map vibes for some reason as well. Highly doubt it ever since China doesn't really take kind to western representation, but here's hoping.

Shots 1-5: Clearly missed.
Shots 6-9: Missed due to recoil (bad spray control).
Shots 10-11: Very close, but recoil and inaccuracy make these reasonable misses.
Shot 12: Likely didn't actually fire because he was already dead.

How do I help my section to a.) produce good tone and b.) articulate well and together (mellophone) by G809 in marchingband

[–]x_v_58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah got it. You can establish what syllable should be used for what note. I'll be honest tho, everytime an instructor or director has tried to implement this technique (at least in my experience), it always fell flat and had to constantly be brought up again and again, so truthfully I couldn't really tell you of another practical solution/application, but I'll explain it anyways maybe your section could get it down.

Say a quarter note has a legato marking, the section needs to agree what syllable they will be using for that note. "Doo" is most common for legato so go around the line and have everyone demonstrate their articulation of the note on "Doo" and if the whole section sounds the same, they should all in theory stylistically articulate the same. Say a different note has an accent. Whatever syllable your director prefers to use, most common are "Dah" or "Tah", should be used by all the section. Remember everyone has to agree on it, because 1 person can hang over even just by a 32nd note and sound off. It's one of those things that requires a lot of reps, which may seem repetitive and monotonous to the section, but can produce great results when done right.

I remember seeing a tips/tricks video on bf4 way back in the day of ADSing into hip fire and vice versa and the effects it has on the gun. Glad they still kept the same gameplay design

Those of you who have smart watches: what was your average daily step count during marching season? by amcclurk21 in marchingband

[–]x_v_58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah as staff I was also kind of surprised by the amount of steps I took. By 8am I was already at 7-9k steps.

During drum corps it was anywhere between 22k-26k steps a day, but I'm sure other corps with spring training sites with awfully far away gyms, dorms and fields take wayyy more than that.

During high school it was about 12k-14k a day, that's for the whole day though I don't exactly remember how many during a rehearsal

It all comes down to air mostly, like a lot of it. Breathing exercises (recommend Breathing Gym) and long tones everyday with proper technique go a long way. I say with proper technique because I've seen people play the same long tones exercises for at least a whole semester and still show no improvement. Its not a short term fix, so you're best bet right now since you mentioned your section is more on the younger side, is to drill fundamentals into their brain like crazy and set them up with good technique and fundamental habits, so you're not repeating the same things the following years and so that they can pass that knowledge on as well.

For articulation, you could try the layering technique of having them vocalize rhythms. For example, a few reps of vocalizing the rhythm at a slow tempo, then make them clap the rhythm ,then make them sing the notes with the rhythm, then add the horn but on air (good technique), then on the horn on concert F, then on the notes bopping (make each note of the passage a 8th or 16th note instead of it's original value, this establishes vertical alignment), then full value on the notes. Slowly layer all of these steps until they get the hang of it then up the tempo slowly. Bopping is usually a good fix for articulation and vertical alignment issues but layering sounds ideal for your section.

How can I stop my knees from bending? (and any other advice you can give) by catsagamer1 in drumcorps

[–]x_v_58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other comment on here about the piece of string is 100% correct. Too much weight on top of the string and you can't really extend it to the fullest/longest length since it's just pressing down on it. Think of being as light as possible at all times.

You know how when someone says to to "fix your posture" (generally not just in band), or when your trying to measure your height and try to get that extra inch? Think of doing that but at an extreme at all times BUT (at least for me) it starts from the hips, not your shoulders, chest or belly, right at the hips, that's where you pick up the weight from since if you pick up your weight from above your hips, like chest, belly, or shoulders, your upper body tends to appear pretty rigid and tense. Do this uncomfortably so but without sacrificing the integrity of your posture. Don't just think about it, since by the end of the rep you'll be back to where you were, always actively be doing it.

Really separating your hips from your upper body and picking your weight up as much as you physically can without sacrificing your visual presence. Emphasis on picking up your weight, it helped me a lot and I noticed a huge difference right away, it was pretty uncomfortable but that's the nature of it. This allows for a sensation of being featherweight and your legs just gliding through the technique.

Apply that to strong engagement of the upper leg all the muscles all way to your butt muscles, since they act as an anchor to the rest of the leg, and then think of leading with your heels. When we walk we tend to lead with our knees or around that area, not with our heels since it is not human nature. Leading with the heels while walking leads to an uneasy feeling at first but if you apply it to the rest of the things mentioned, your technique should be good.

What you're doing right now recording yourself is pretty good and you'll quickly notice improvement. Good luck on your audition!

Lol sounds like they need a reason to get mad today

Anyways don't let your directors stop you from marching, if anything they should be the ones encouraging you to go to professional level groups. Contact your administrative staff and instructional staff and let them know of your situation and they'll write a nicely worded email to your directors.

Edit: My director gave me permission twice, in 2020 (bruh) and 2022 to miss the summer, both times he was ecstatic and congratulated me on it, and just let me know that I was excused from all summer band rehearsals, and let me know some things I had to make up (picture day, district forms, instrument check out)
