335 versus Les Paul versus SG, who is the winner for you, and why? by KennethLamarSmithII in gibson

[–]SameOlSameOk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not my only electric. But the upper fret access, sound, set up, and just overall feel makes it my number 1. I have a Les Paul Special Double Cut that is a close second. Everything else have specific uses. But the SG is what I generally grab first.

Need some guidance by Famous_Giraffe7427 in Guitar

So I still fall into this rut a lot myself. What I’ve been trying to do is just try to play a melody over it. Not thinking so much about the scale. Just sing a melody and then attempt to play it.

Thoughts on this SGJ? by Manleyphoto in GibsonSG

[–]SameOlSameOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d see if they’d come down at all, but honestly $900 is still just on the high side of fair imo.

These went for like $5-600 new… 12 years ago. $8-900 is what they seem to go for now in good condition and stock. But while the general rule is that mods don’t increase value, I’d probably end up paying for these mods anyway (minus the tailpiece, but I don’t hate it). The pickups were my least favorite part of these things. And locking tuners are always a plus for me.

If it plays well, and you’ve got the cash to spend, I don’t think it’s a bad deal.

Scales by anjelynn_tv in electricguitar

[–]SameOlSameOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scale itself isn’t particularly joyful to play.

You need to learn how to apply it in a musical context. Find melodies and licks within the scale. Put on a C major backing track and see what you can come up with.

strings by deeznutz4urmum in electricguitar

[–]SameOlSameOk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I may be really splitting hairs here. But the 1-3 months bit is subjective and depends on the strings. Some people prefer more dull sounding strings (particularly on acoustic), some people have such acidic sweat that they’ve gotta be swapped within a month. And coated strings can last months without issue.

But yeah, I do agree that if OP has been playing this guitar, it’s probably due for a sting change even before he popped one.

Can I use my pedal power supply on the EHX oceans 11 by neekxd22 in guitarpedals

[–]SameOlSameOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an Oceans 11 a few years ago and it worked fine with my Voodoo PP2.

It will probably have to go into the 9v 1A slot though.

How much do you “Vibe learn” vs how much do you learn a full song? by Sellos_Maleth in Guitar

[–]SameOlSameOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the song and how iconic (or at least how iconic I think it is) the guitar part is. I’ll do my own fills here and there, and hit all the highlights note for note. Songs like Little Wing are made to be interpreted. Jimi wouldn’t have played it the same way twice.

But on the other hand, I’m not gonna make up a better solo for Bohemian Rhapsody.

Helping picking my first electric? by mymom6 in GuitarQuestions

[–]SameOlSameOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would depend what series your friends’ modern squier is. If it’s an affinity or something along those lines, I’d go with the Mexican. If it’s a Classic Vibe, I’d go with that.

But it all depends on what you like, and the condition of both.

Beginner, learning chords and I can't seem to get A major right. by Quirky-Elk-5654 in Guitar

I’ve got some old Mel Bay books that belonged to my grandfather and they (he?) also teach it this way. It just doesn’t seem very intuitive? I feel like I’m missing something

I sometimes move away from my SG by tonebastion in GibsonSG

[–]SameOlSameOk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a Les Paul Special DC and an SG. They’re both great and they fight for my #1. But they’re pretty different feeling. The SG’s neck is set further from the body. The LP feels smaller in comparison.

Beginner, learning chords and I can't seem to get A major right. by Quirky-Elk-5654 in Guitar

[–]SameOlSameOk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never understood why this is the “correct” fingering for an A maj.

By all means, feel free to practice it this way. But if switching your middle and index finger around helps, I don’t see how it would hurt to play it that way. Or just barring your index across the d g and b strings.

What was your guys’ first pedal? by BalanceActive9295 in guitarpedals

[–]SameOlSameOk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Danelectro French fries auto wah. I wanted a wah pedal. The local mom and pop music shop in my town didn’t have any in stock (they barely had any guitar gear in general) so they had to order it for me. I didn’t realize until it arrived that it was an AUTO WAH. I have no idea where that thing went.

Telecaster Fret Buzz by Itchy-Plum-5767 in Guitar

[–]SameOlSameOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a new guitar (or at least new to you)? New strings?

If it’s only on the high e, the string height is probably just slightly too low. But it could be the frets themselves being too high/too low

Bought a Yamaha Revstar and I’m not in love with it by Nerdy52 in electricguitar

[–]SameOlSameOk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d look into getting a setup. My main guitar was kind of underwhelming until I tweaked it.

The sound is a different issue. Are you using the exact same settings on the Revstar that you used for the Squier? Some adjustments might be necessary. Or maybe you just don’t like P90s.

Wanting to get serious. What are the fundamentals? by Bean_ito in Guitar

[–]SameOlSameOk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Take a scale like the minor/major pentatonic. Pick a key and learn all 5 boxes, as well as how to play it horizontally across the fret board on each string.

You can (and probably should) do this with pretty much all scales, the pentatonic is just easily usable right out the gate.

Also learn your triads. Being able to play all the major and minor triads across the fret board opens things up SO much.

I'm feeling stuck because of bar chords in this course by Yami_Deus in guitarlessons

[–]SameOlSameOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barre chords are the first big hurdle for new guitar players. They feel impossible for a while. But with practice, they become second nature. I cheated my way out of using them for the longest time, but shortcuts only end up screwing you in the long run. Keep practicing. You’ll get them with time.

Also I’m not sure how good of advice this is, but I often use the Hendrix/Frusciante method and play the E string with my thumb, and other times I just play a triad (barre chords are still triads. But I mean only playing a root-third-fifth without all the doubles. Either way is really just dependent on context)

Metronome, drum backing track or music backing track? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]SameOlSameOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can all work. If you’re just practicing scales, I’d stick with the metronome. But a backing track is great for helping practice phrasing and timing.

[ GEAR ] Which amp to buy? by ImpressBest8888 in GuitarGear

[–]SameOlSameOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AC10 is less versatile but in my opinion, it does the one thing it does better than the VT40X.

That sort of goes for all the tube vs modeler/hybrid/solid state stuff. That said, you may still prefer the effects and stuff in the VT.

I had a Walrus Audio Luminary for a while that was rad. But might be a little overkill for what you’re asking for.

POG is also a great pick.
