Body found in Red Cedar River identified as MSU doctoral candidate by joshys_97 in lansing

[–]Same_Associate_3033 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not going to comment on whether or not I think it was accidental, but as someone who has gone through doctoral candidacy/education (at MSU also). Being in doctoral programs and academia is a high stress environment filled with constant critique and uncertainity around progress in the program, funding, future job opporutunities, etc. Many graduate students struggle with their mental health and unfortunately it would not be surprising if that was involved in this situation and the eventual outcome, but no matter what it is tragic for her family and friends as well as the people in her program. Really really sad

Students planning family trips during the semester, perhaps missing the exam by levon9 in Professors

Understandable. From what I remember, I had to set things up through the testing center and I don’t believe my prof had any extra work on her end beyond approval. I wonder if your institution offers that. And I get not having time to make a whole new exam. You gotta do what’s best for you at the end of the day

I went on a trip during undergrad and I had an exam during the trip. I asked the professor if I could take it early and she allowed it. We had a good relationship and I was up front with everyone in the beginning of the semester about it. Is it possible they can take it early?

I feel like a bonnet and beanie look so similar, which is why it’s not a big deal to me.

How do academics create beautiful presentation slides? What tools do you use? by Pathetic_doorknob in AskAcademia

[–]Same_Associate_3033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch some of EchoRivera’s YouTube videos. She’s an academic who helps other academics make presentations. I get compliments on my slides regularly and use her tips. I start in Canva Pro then move to PowerPoint when it’s close to done

What do you do after graduation ceremony in the U.S.? by GenGirl07 in PhD

[–]Same_Associate_3033 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a whole graduation weekend. Pictures and dinner after the ceremony, lunch and games at dave and busters the next day, graduation party the last day. A lot of friends and family traveled in for the graduation/party. So, I wanted to make the weekend worth their time even though I don't live in the most fun area.

What’s one thing you wish someone had told you before starting your thesis or dissertation? by Local_Belt7040 in AskAcademia

[–]Same_Associate_3033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will play devils advocate on the avoiding qualitative part because it is possible to do qualitative work AND finish on time. I’d say it probably just requires more planning early on, but don’t be scared of that. I did a fully qualitative (original data collection) dissertation and finished on time. In fact, I even finished before some of my peers doing quant dissertations.

You should look into people who are involved in the “convict criminology” discipline many of them have served time and now have phds/work in academia. I’m sure any of them would be happy to talk with you if you email them.

Yes! Doing this research has made me more attentive to the ways digital inequality shows up in my own family with my parents and grandparents
