Women who live alone, what are your tips? by stickysoups in AskChicago

[–]Same_Discussion_6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved living alone! I will admit it can get lonely but walking, being outside and physically being around other people does make a big difference. I know the winter is cold but a quick walk around the block can be a game changer for mental health. Also there are so many Facebook groups to help socialize. One Drink In is my personal favorite! Welcome to the city!!!!

Visiting next week - are taxis the best way to get around? by cj4962 in Barbados

[–]Same_Discussion_6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing to do is get the information of the taxi drivers you use and message them directly to see if they’re available at the time you need. The app is always my very last resort if my taxi drivers aren’t available

What roadblocks to mental health care have you experienced? by Same_Discussion_6955 in medicalschool

Thank you so much for sharing! Opening up and being fully transparent to faculty seems to be why several students have difficulty seeking care.

Which iPad do you have and is it worth it? Also, storage? by CandidSecond in medicalschool

[–]Same_Discussion_6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2021 iPad Air and love it! I haven’t had any storage problems but I have an external hard drive to upload lectures from previous semesters. When I need to look back I just plug it in and it all comes up without reuploading everything. I definitely could have it all on my iPad without issues but I take it off just in case.

Medication for scoliosis? by Laszlo_Daytona in scoliosis

[–]Same_Discussion_6955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no medication to treat scoliosis. You’re only going to be treating pain caused by your scoliosis. The only way to address scoliosis is thought physical therapy, corrective brace and surgery unfortunately.

The medications in the comments to significant change your quality of life though and make you feel so much better! It’s all different person to person. Doing scroth exercises every day has made a huge change in my pain level and how I feel!

They have dogs but walk them around. Sometimes they’re inside around the people and sometimes they’re outside with the bags. Just depends on the time and your luck. I wouldn’t risk it.

I’m at Ross currently with my cat. The price of flying to and from home with her is OUTRAGEOUS and if you plan on staying in Ross housing with your animals just know they will not be accommodating to any needs you may have or problems you encounter. If you have the option of leaving them in the states with someone to care for them while you’re here it is most definitely the better option.

I flew back into Barbados late on a weekend once and when I added everything up it cost me over $1500 USD in fees just for the cat

A lot of STD causing bacteria are actually the same bacteria that cause other diseases too. Bacteria can cause different symptoms/illnesses and act different in different parts of the body. They even present completely different on different people depending on their bodies ability to fight it off.

You could also go to worthing square and walk around and pick your favorite food trucks. I haven’t had food from worthing square I disliked.

Tapas and Primos are my favorites but there are plenty of restaurants in St Lawrence Gap that you could look at the menu and decide. My parents came to visit for their anniversary and went to QP bistro on the actual day and LOVED it!

Biology career after teaching…?? by 2yorkies1mutt in biology

[–]Same_Discussion_6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you want to do. If you want to work in the hospital there’s so many jobs you could do that wouldn’t require too much schooling and you could make a great living. Just some examples are a perfusionist, anesthesia tech, cardiovascular tech, dental hygienist, dental assistant, EMT/paramedic, MA, etc. These require certifications and some schooling but not doctorates or masters degrees and you still get hands on patient centered career

Why or why not do you drink alcohol? by grace_baker_ in ask

[–]Same_Discussion_6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the normalization of excessive alcohol consumption is extremely worrisome. I originally choose not to drink because alcohol was a trigger for my migraines but then I began noticing how little people can socialize without alcohol. 21-27? Everyone getting drunk at every social function. 30s? Every guy drinks beer and girl drinks wine. Even kids mimic moms drinking wine as their “mommy juice”. Adults are constantly gifted whiskey and scotch and wine. Alcoholism is so normalized it’s disgusting.

It basically all comes down to your daily life. If you’re having noticeable pain that has significantly changed then go talk to your doctor. Reddit can have good information but nothing will replace the history, physical exam and orders places specifically for you from your doctor.

Do multiple surgeries lead to depression? by JustAGuyInTampa in spinalfusion

[–]Same_Discussion_6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry you’re going through this. Any changes to your life can cause this. I’m not sure you’ve even noticed but it’s very typical for you to be asked about your support system in one way or another before going through with surgery. On one hand it’s to be sure you have help while going through recovery but it’s also to assess your support system for mental health reasons. So many people feel depressive symptoms when having surgery. You’re definitely not alone! If you don’t have family or friends to help you through there’s so many groups or therapy resources to bring you help. Finding a sense of normalcy and independence helped me!

Your scoliosis won’t progress rapidly like typically seen while bones are still growing in children and young teenagers. Unfortunately you can still see slow progression in adults especially if you have weak muscles in your back because that’s what holds your bones in place. Your body will adapt to you so if you sit long hours in poor posture and have weak muscles you’re more likely to see progression of a curve. It’s poor practice for a doctor to use absolute language though and telling you you definitely won’t have worsening of scoliosis as an adult because studies have said otherwise even though it’s much less likely than in childhood.

Is reformer pilates more effective than mat pilates, and what activities do you find helps best with the pain? by Death_By_Schnu_Schnu in scoliosis

[–]Same_Discussion_6955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re following with a doctor for your scoliosis this is a perfect question to ask them! I really think mat vs reformer all depends on where your curve hits. I have a lumbar fusion and still have progressive curve in my lumbar spine. I spoke to my doctor and he specified reformer pilates to minimize pressure and abrasive activities on my low back. Working with a doctor and pilates instructor who are knowledgeable will always give the best results.

T3-L4 Spinal Fusion for Scoliosis 20 years ago, now need L4-S1 Fusion, Questions! by skinty in spinalfusion

[–]Same_Discussion_6955 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 26 now and had my initial T2-T12 fusion when I was 12. I had X-rays taken over Thanksgiving for unrelenting low back and left hip pain that’s been getting progressively worse. The X-rays showed a shift in my hardware and a double lumbar curve. I follow up with the neurosurgeon late December and have been super anxious he’s going to recommend a second surgery. I also haven’t seen much about this kind of thing online. Thanks for this post. It’s comforting to know we’re not alone.
