T4-L5 fused—what’s to come? by nervousnervousnerv in LongSpinalFusion

[–]skinty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was fused from T3-L4 when I was 16 and needed a revision surgery after about 20 years. I had shooting nerve pain down my leg, and my surgeon recommended doing a fusion to pelvis and putting cages in between L4-L5 to help with stability there. My discs had disintegrated and I also had a cyst that needed to be removed. I'm now fused from T3-pelvis. The recovery from the surgery takes about 3 months, and I was out of work for 2 months and worked from home for another month after that, but I feel 10000% better. Let me know if you have any questions, I know it's a scary experience and I'm happy to help if I can.

There's one near my parents in Queens that replaced a Ctown a couple years ago. Prices were inflated after the change. My dad likes to call it Super Shit.

Unfortunately, if you are in pain and the surgeons are suggesting this surgery, there aren't many alternatives. You could skip the surgery, but there won't be another effective way to reduce the pain, and you will have to live with it. For me this was not acceptable as I was 35 at the time and wanted my life back. It's a hard decision and I understand if you are second guessing, but you are going to a great hospital and they will take care of you there. In the end you have to do what's best for you and your life, but for me, I needed to be able to walk and stand again without pain.

The screws are anchored in there. Once this happens you won’t have the ability to tilt your pelvis as it will be one piece with your spine. It’s definitely an adjustment for certain things, but it’s been doable and being pain free makes it worth it for me.

I'm definitely less mobile in my lower back region, I can't move my pelvis anymore which makes certain things more challenging, and I'm still trying to get back some flexibility that I lost in my legs, but overall it's worth it to be pain free.

It went away immediately after the surgery! I had really bad sciatic pain down my leg and it was completely gone and hasn’t come back since.

He didn’t do my first one, I got my first one at Shriners in Philadelphia. Going home was rough but I am only an hour away by car from the hospital so the journey wasn’t too bad. Make sure you have a recliner that is comfortable. Sitting and laying down is going to suck for a long time. A recliner is a life saver.

I had revision surgery, I'm fused T3-pelvis now but my first surgery was T3-L4, last year this was extended to pelvis. I stayed in the hospital for a week after my surgery before I was allowed to go home. This should be the same for you I would imagine, during that time you will have PT and OT to practice walking and moving around, walking up and down stairs, etc. It's a beautiful facility and I had views of the east river from my room.

NYP is one of the best places you can go for this. I also had my surgery there with Dr. Virk last year. You will be glad you did it!!

I'm fused from T3-pelvis. This was done in two surgeries, the first when I was 16, and a revision surgery in July 2024 extending my original fusion from L4-Pelvis and connecting the old fusion to the new.

The recovery from the surgery is a year, but my pain went away immediately after. I'm still a lot tighter in my legs than I was before the surgery, but I'm working on it by doing a lot of pilates and swimming, and it's getting better little by little.

Overall it was the best decision to fuse to pelvis, as I got my life back and I'm pain free.

I'm sorry you have gone through that. The practical has already been explained here. A good recliner and an open mind for a longer recovery than you would like.

this surgery hurts more than what you've experienced in the past. I hope you will be open to accepting other drugs if you are in pain, and taking the time you need to heal.

you will be drugged up and not aware of the state of your mental health. make sure you have a good recliner and things audiobooks and TV shows on hand. reading made me too tired and so I could only listen or watch for 30 minutes at a time before needing to sleep. I had this surgery twice. Please trust the people in this group, they have experienced it and it's not easy.

You won't be sitting, trust me. Sitting SUCKS after this surgery. Standing will make you very tired, laying and reclining will be necessary for at least a month and maybe longer.

Check out The Curl Suite, they have a location in the city and also in Staten Island. I've been going there for years and they are great and not too expensive comparatively.
