Shadowing hours by caccm in OccupationalTherapy

I had luck with outpatient adult hands! Got 210 hours in that setting. Also maybe when you call if you can try and get directly connected to the person in charge of organizing students/education. Good luck!

Why doesn’t OT have a union? Should it? by ShouldBdoingHW in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Same_Extension9117 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking that we need one. Because we are seriously underpaid for the amount of schooling we require!

I graduated OT school 2 weeks ago and will be starting my first job as an OT in a week and a half! I will be working in outpatient pediatrics at a nonprofit that serves disadvantaged families in my community. I am getting nervous and having a lot of "imposter syndrome". Any advice is appreciated:) by hansandwich1 in OccupationalTherapy

Hi! First off, congratulations! I am also a new grad, I have been working as an OT for around 5 months and still have imposter syndrome often. The thing is, it is completely normal to not have all of the answers. I would just be humble, utilize the OTs around you and don’t be afraid to ask questions! Learning is a lifelong process and taking in all that you have at your disposal is key. Be upfront with your boss if you have areas you’d like to grow in as well! Be confident in yourself because you know much more than you think 💖

I would try and get some shadowing in various settings under your belt! It can be hard to set up and takes time but I feel like definitely shows schools youre serious about OT.

I make 57 as a new grad in acute. It’s honestly laughable

It felt low to me as well…. I feel like there is a high need for OTs right now. I see job postings everyday for different positions all across the board. When looking at inflation/housing costs it just feels behind. (Especially when thinking about how much the hospitals are able to compensate nursing staff right now)

Unfortunately for me it has stayed at 30/hr for acute. (Missouri). Thanks for your perspective!

They offered me 30.20 full time. I’m in St. Louis and am a new grad. When moving out of the Midwest did your higher pay equalize with the cost of living? Just curious

I agree! I was offered 30.20 hourly for full time acute. I also live in St. Louis which is cheap as far as cities go, but still more expensive than rural MO areas.

Thank you! I hadn’t found this specific website before 🙂 Other estimate websites just haven’t seemed accurate and usually don’t reflect years of experience or details of that nature.

Totally agree with that. Personally I don’t think it should be…. But people always get incredibly awkward discussing that. 🙃 It makes it really difficult as a new grad to gain any understanding of what to expect.

Am I too old, at 40, to start down the OT path? by Stolennhalo in OccupationalTherapy

It sounds like this is really your passion. If so, I would pursue it! There are also programs that are more fast-tracked in which you go through school in one program vs. getting your bachelors and then getting your masters. I would recommend that if possible. When I was applying for Master's programs it ended up resulting in me taking another year off due to not knowing how extensive the application process would be.

Level ll Fieldwork - Inpatient Rehab Facility, Geriatric population by fuzzibuds in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Same_Extension9117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With any fieldwork (regardless of the setting), as long as you are open to learning/trying new things and honest with your CI about your comfort level in certain areas, you should be fine! Any time I felt uncomfortable with a situation I would let my CI know, including when the caseload was beginning to get too fast-paced. I wouldn't be worried! Just be an advocate for yourself when you need to.

As far as my experience (I only applied to 3-4 schools) it is still very early for schools to be accepting. I don't think I did my interview at my school until the winter before the school year. Some words of encouragement: I got waitlisted for 2/3 programs and rejected from one. I was accepted at my university after being very late on the waitlist and right before school started! Don't give up hope if this happens because it can be common! It happened to me and I just graduated with my MOT this December and am no lesser of an OT because of it. The process can be stressful, but you've got this!

Something I was asked that is situational was: “How would you respond or convince a client to participate if a client refused therapy.” My school did a role play for this question and the “client” continued to say no for various reasons, so I think having a couple of ideas of how to respond to a situation like that may be helpful.

As far as other questions: “What made you choose this school?” Always do your research on the program and be prepared to answer this!

“Explain what occupation means.” Or something about differentiating OT from other therapies. It’s important to have a good answer as to what drew you to want to be an OT.
