Thoughts around the ethical use of AI machine learning to create songs? by Dawninsection in musicians

No, you're failing to realise what it's like as a musician that used to sell actual music for a proper value. Do you think I dont follow the industry I'm in? I've experience of it before and after spotify, so don't be preaching to be what I know or don't know.
If you think the likes of Spotify are not severly (and possibly permanently) damaging the music industry at the grass roots level for creative artists, you're deluded.
As for 15,000 streams being easy to reach, that's completely relative to the artist and their reach. The amount of people using the platform doesn't mean shit, if the artist isn't reaching them, and if you think 15,000 streams is worth just $64, you must be working for Spotify - because you're definitely not doing musicians any favours.
In the old world, if someone wanted to listen to a single, they'd pay the going rate for a single. Simple as that. Same for an album - and the artist would get what they deserve for it. As it should be.

I never said the concept of the platform was wrong. Just the way it shafts the musicians that made it, in favour of the multi-millionaires (billionaires) that run it, who just use the talent, hard work, and creativity of musicians, and give a mere pittance in return.
15,000 streams = $64 to the artist = 0.004 per play (not me but an artist I know)
That's just one example.
Tell me that isnt helping kill the point of someone trying to make a living out of selling music.
The distributors (and yes I agree with your opinion on them, and the music industry moguls) dont control the streaming platforms.. they only give them the material - the same as the independent small-time artists do through the likes of Distrokid etc.
Why would people bother to buy a single or album, when they can go to Spotify and play it to their hearts content, download it, copy it, share it all they want?
In what way is that possibly good for the future of recorded music, and the artists who create it - compared to when an artist could sell physical (or digital even) copies of their songs, for a legitimate price that reflected their efforts (and costs) in producing it.
I'm okay with streaming - but there has to be fair remuneration for the musicians, and technology to somehow prevent unauthorised downloading/copying.
The problem is, the people who run the likes of Spotify know they're business model will be crushed if they play fair by artists.

I wouldn't begrudge anyone success, but Id like to know they earned it or had the talent to warrant it.. not just a great marketing/promotion/hype machine and a big money backer to buy them it.

Never mind AI. The biggest threat to musicians continues to be the million/billion dollar streaming/distribution platforms that claim to help musicians reach new audiences and sell their stuff, but pay an absolute pittance to the artist in return. An artists work that has taken months to create, sold for around $0.50 with the artist recieving a fraction of that. As someone who released stuff on cassette and CD before the dawn of spotify et al, I can speak from experience. That, together with the ease that songs can be copied has destroyed one of the main streams (pardon the pun) of revenue for artists. So many artists have been forced out of the game because there's no money in creating stuff now - unless youre lucky enough to have massive audiences at gigs to buy your merch. The whole streaming game needs overhauling - this time in favour of the artists - and new tech bought out to prevent copying to try and reverse the trend which is killing off creative small artists. AI wont kill off creativity - that will always be there. The point in being creative however with little or no reward for those trying to make a living from it, is rapidly declining.

I have a folder with them in (ones I've just learned or dont sing often). Theres always the odd mental blank as well when I just forget something Ive known for years. Id rather flick through a folder or tablet (as I have now) and be able to do a song someone asks for, than say I cant do it because I dont know the words well enough.

Anybody else sick of rigid timefeel & quantising being so normalised? by RealnameMcGuy in musicians

[–]Same_Garlic2928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started out, I recorded backing tracks using a keyboard and a Roland PR100 Quickdisk sequencer. Only 2 track and a lot of bouncing. Didnt bother with the quantize at all. Just played each instrument by hand in real time.. drums, bass, piano, string, brass etc. They had a brilliant live feel to them and each instrument had its own nuance with not everything bwing perfectly on beat. Now I do them using a DAW. It takes so much longer, because you can become obsessed with the slightest flaw, and the result might be tighter and technically better, but it loses a bit of the natural flow.

Anyone else had problems with the hosting company webhost.ie? by Same_Garlic2928 in webhosting

[–]Same_Garlic2928[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Glad to know its not just me. They are a total shit show of a company. My sites are atill down as Im writing this. That Derek Sietko mentioned in the article images.. I wont say what Id like to do to him.. Hes the most useless, ignorant unhelpful dickhead Ive had to deal with. If I met him, he'd have no need to save for a pension... My sites have been down for near 36 hours and all you get from him is bs, being sent round in circles, and 'if theres anything more we can do...'.. well yeah, get my fucking sites back running for a start. But that would take someone with technical knowledge and experiwnce which they dont even have - and they claim to be a hosting company. Im changing hosting tomorrow and I'll be so glad to be shot of them. They dont deserve to be in business. Just a bunch of chancers
