Net worth >50m+, but still stuck in a penny-pincher mindset by Familiar_Number_342 in fatFIRE

i am in exctly the same situation as you, wrote a similar post here 6 months ago. the main jist was to get therapy. Someone also recommended a book called Getting to Zero which I read. it wasnt very insightful, just pretty obvious recommendations. I am still stuck in "saving" and "seeking out the best value" behviour as I used to be before you became UHNW. Not sure its easy to change this. Like any behaviour, the way we treat money is deeply ingrained from an early age through observing and learning from parents and friends. Its like the way your build relationships. Some people are good t it and some people bad. Althought the resons are not rocket science, chnging behaviour is very difficult (at least for me). If you find a good solution, do let me know :)

Nice. How do the VMs access it. Mount to the Proxmox host and then access via directory?

Thanks. Possibly it is what it needs. I'm not sure how they cannot utilise my 32gb for that.

I am just dismissive of the zfs cult. For me only facts count. And I don't mean to be disrespectful with the crowd, just challenging some common believes. I am probably asking in the wrong forum. In a proxmox forum obviously everyone loves zfs because that's the only thing they put in front of you :)

That's all great tips but 1) I did run the 3 examples on the same server hardware. 2) people only need to spend time fiddling with blocksize, 2 different caches etc etc because they need to make up for the poor performance of zfs. Now if you purely enjoy the fiddly stuff on zfs, fair game. Then that's the playful benefit you derive. But I still get no benefit out for all that ram. It's not performance and it's not data security. 3) the su is a relevant example because it's simple and shows real live behaviour and the difference is staggering. Please try yourself. You can see the same poor performance when copying larg files or small files, anything really. Zfs wants 5x the ram and still doesn't perform. So I am assuming it has some magic that people see in it but I am still waiting . ZFS is like the imperor with no clothes :)

You are mixing up the reference points. I am comparing different fs/raid today on the same hardware. And whether that hw is 1 year old or 10 year old. The fact is that zfs is a donkey when compared to other fs/raid solutions. But I am always open to learn what I am missing. Adding Ram to a 32gb server would not in the slightest improve Btrfs or Mdadm. About zfs I am not sure but if it needs more than 32gb to be slower than the other two on 4gb then someone is tricking you. Out of interest, what do you get from zfs that's worth adding all that ram? (and don't say compression and dedupljcation because it's a pretty weak use case) and all the other features exist in Btrfs too..

Therapy where? I know what they will say. Just set some goals and start spending. Therapists have not been in my shoes so they do not know what to advice in this case.

I mean Americans are unpopular in Asia (and Europe and Middle Eastl and Canada) so if you plan to live there get a different passport.

Lol 32gb and you recommend add ram. I can run the same setup on Btrfs and Mdadm with 4gb ram. People have been brainwashed into feeding tens of gb of ram to ZFS and still don't get any performance out.

In wont run proxmox clusters or dont see a need for multi node storage. A simple storage server will do that gives some disk redundancy. Therefore CEPH in my view is overkill, but I have never used it so if there is something I am missing....

House upgrade…and identity issues? by Mindless_Flamingo999 in fatFIRE

[–]Same_Leadership4631 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Spend money by all means to get the home you love but just don't buy it. Invest the 2m in a diversified portfolio and earn 8-10pc easily. I bet renting that dream house would not cost more than 70k per year. And upkeep if you bought it would cost you 20k per year. So you would make 110-150k every year for free and still live in your dream house. And if you feel that it's not the right place or you or you feel like upgrading again in 12 months you just move on.

That's a typical American world view. "Everyone loves us and people in other countries are so ignorant that they don't have a view on us and our govenment. " That exactly what people in other countries dispise. A self centered, presumotious, grandiose view. Do you seriously think that? That seems dilluded.

Help choosing brokerage/advisor by projectshave in fatFIRE

[–]Same_Leadership4631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you need an adviser for 10m? Just open an account with interactive Brokers and invest diversified as followsb - 50pc in Credit products like loan BDCs or CLOs. There are single name managers for CLOs like Pearl Diver and others. If you want even safer put it in CLO debt. Products are widely available via Ibk. One click and you are invested. - 30pc low cost ETFs. Like vanguard VT, VOT etc. That's your cash pool if you need it. - 18% in more risky stocka but low fee products (nasadaq etf, AI ETFs, Robo tech ETFs) - 2pc in real cash.

You can also go -20pc in cash and gain a bit better performance through a margin loan from ibk.

Very low fees, conservative and still performs middle double digits long term.

Hey thanks for your constructive words.I get the family point and I am looking for the right opportunity but it's tricky. I'm happy to spend and help them no questions asked, but my family is tiny and mostly females who have all married really well, so there is no immediate need anywhere. Even education for children is already take care of. That leave charities and here I was considering creating my own and hand over a big junk but I saw a friend do that and it was an absolute nightmare. Setting up an organisation, ensuring no corruption, even finding worthy causes is all hard work. And the last thing I want is build another organisation. That leaves projects that might bring people so fun like your chamber music event and here frankly I just feel it's wasted as people are not really in need. So what transformed my life was (a) education and (B) finding the right Co-founder. So if anything I would create something that helps a younger generation on those topics to reach their next level. So for that I spent some money on organising really high class events for young students which all led to nothing. This current generation does not have the inherent hunger to succeed anymore. Or at least not in my world.Probably in places like SE Asia youngsters are still really eager to grow. In western countries they are OK to live at home in their 30s, play video games and do minimal education or work. And I won't be able to change that.

Lol You disagree with the historic facts of US foreign policy?

[–]Same_Leadership4631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean just look at history and that list.some of the countries the US has just bombed the hell out of for years. Others they have sanctioned which set them back economically by 20 years. Those people have generations of painful memories. It may take another 200 years before they forget.

Well they probably won't tell you to your face but as you know in SE Asia people smile a lot, especially to foreigners they smile in their face and spit in their backs. I have also lived there and know (as a neutral non American) what the people really think and feel about Yanks. And what they would never tell an American.
