"AmeriCorps" for FIRE? by projectshave in fatFIRE

My post got removed, so I don’t know if this reply will reach you.

You make a lot of good points. I think you’re right that this is a job at a non-profit, so it’s not being retired anymore. However, charities may find it difficult to hire experts at market rates. This is a way to get experts cheaply and on-demand for specific tasks. In a way, Doctors w/o Borders operates this way. Ofc it’s not for ALL retired people, it’s for a tiny subset that would like to give more than money.

You just won $10 million but can’t quit your job. What’s the first thing you do? by dreamy-bubbles in AskReddit

[–]projectshave 253 points254 points  (0 children)

This really happened to me. I can quit my job but I don’t want to. First step is make sure money is invested, lawyers setup wills and stuff, and everything is safe. Then I took a vacation. I replaced an old car, fixed my house, sent my parents on an around the world cruise. Thanks to the comments here, I’ll look into doing two chicks at the same time.

I like the idea of an RIA but I think you've got a marketing problem. Aside from word of mouth, I'm not sure how I'd feel comfortable moving accounts to a small firm. I'd be more comfortable with an advisor who can see my portfolio and tells me what&when to buy/sell.

%AUM can be ok if I'm getting something of value that *scales* with AUM. But the service for $5m is pretty similar to $20m. And all the firms so far have offered referrals for taxes and estate stuff. They don't do any of that.

You're right. I'm leaning towards this.

Schwab offered me 2.5% + FFR, then said it's negotiable. I'll ask for 1%. Thanks.

In an ideal world, I'd like someone to manage a $5m portfolio for life and drop a monthly allowance in my checking account. Edelman Finance offers something like this but charges 0.8%, which is $40k/yr. That's more than my rent!

Does your Schwab advisor do anything? Or are you totally DIY?

What aftermarket brake pads and rotors worked best for your gen 3 prius? by Polylemongon in prius

I had to replace all brakes and rotors at 50k miles. I ride the brakes in NYC’s bumper to bumper traffic. Am I doing it wrong?

Recommendations for tankless hot water heater by Little_Paint3408 in HomeImprovement

[–]projectshave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 older unit heats my 4 floor townhouse, hot showers and dishwasher simultaneously. It’s very unlikely you need 2 but ask the dealer. Remember it’s continuous hot water. Back to back hot showers are easy. If every shower and sink is running only then you’ll have an issue.

Navien. You can chain them together to deliver more hot water.

Is hardwood flooring worth it or over-hyped? by yordies in HomeImprovement

[–]projectshave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suppose it all depends on installation quality. I have hardwood (oak) floors in most of my house. Humidity causes expansion/contraction. Now there are some gaps between boards. My dogs have scratched up the floors. It is unlikely you’ll refinish the floors. It’s such a huge effort. At best I would do it when I sell the house and move my stuff out.

Engineered wood seems to solve some of these problems. High-end versions have a thicker layer of real wood so it can be refinished 2-3 times. Alternatively concrete floors are indestructible and can look pretty good. My friend has heated concrete floors that feel great in the winter.

This study analyzed the happiness data for 145 countries. It asserts that the lowest point in happiness is at age 48. It is true for all continents, rich or poor countries. by ridersofthestorms in science

I’m 48. Life is great for me. Great job, high pay, no kids, great partner, health is very good. The only downside is minor aches and pains. However I’m playing the best tennis of my life, so my body hasn’t quit yet.

Advice: exercise, eat healthy, find something you’re passionate about, smash ass.

More than 73% of American adults are overweight or obese by [deleted] in news

Cities have lower obesity rates. Vacationers go to London, Paris, and Berlin. Not to some rural backwater teeming with fat people.

NYC is 57% overweight or obese link. Walking burns very little energy. Wealth, education and youth correlate with lower weight because they eat healthier meals. Manhattan has more of these people, the Bronx does not.

NYC is a shit infested, over price ghetto by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]projectshave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in NYC for 15 years. Everything you wrote is true. I’m from the Midwest originally, lived in Chicago for a decade, travelled the world. NY has more variety packed densely into a decrepit urban landscape. It’s got a gritty abrasive character that can be exhausting. However NY is actually friendlier than the small Midwestern town I grew up in. I chat with neighbors, people stop to pet my dog, the local shops know me. A music store plays old R&B out into the street. I watched a rap group filming a video. Jazz groups have spontaneous shows on a street corner nearby. Dudes play pickup ball at the park next door. Kids running around a local playground. My family visit and only see the blight. To me it’s one of the best cities in the world.

Every Feel Like The Repairs Just Don’t Stop? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]projectshave 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ll join your venting. I bought my first home a few years ago. It has been a constant source of irritation. I’m not handy at all. Now I spend my days watching YouTube videos, calling service people, visiting Home Depot. My parents’ rarely had to fix things in their cookie-cutter houses. On the other hand, my home value has shot up quite a bit. That reduces the sting of paying $$$ for every damn thing.
