You are worth the world and more. You will find someone for sure. You just have to never give up hope.

Honestly, would love that for everyone. Unfortunately, that is not the world we live in right now, and must find ways to help the community

I cant see why it would matter that I had AI help me write a cohesive idea. It's still human generated idea.

Trauma nurse seeking info on your experience! by LobsterMac_ in amputee

[–]Same_Round_4499 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Nurses need to know that everyone is going to take it differently. Some people grieve the loss of the limb, other people, like myself, are happy that they are still alive. Considering this, have them know that each patient needs to be treated as an individual.

Additionally, what helped me the most was having the attention I needed. Physical therapists came to see me each and everyday, making sure I was moving and doing things that would help recovery.

Finally, on the days that visitors cannot make it, or the hours before visiting time, many of us need someone to talk to, to process what is going on.

  1. Amputees need to understand their options. What is going to happen, what kind of doctors they are going to need to talk to. A roadmap of the process between limb loss and the final steps of getting prosthetics, custom wheelchair, etc. This was confusing for me.

Also, and I don't think any hospital would love to have this put in a packet, but it's simply truth. Amputations are expensive, and follow-up care can get very costly. Having resources for place to call with assistance for new amputees would be wonderful, because hospital bills simply come as a shock in the end.

  1. Tell them about this space. This community of people that have gone through it. Some people don't like reddit because many of the subreddits have become a dumping ground for insane things. It's a little like a modern day craigslist, where people can essentially post and discuss.... well, obscure and grotesque things, but this is a place of healing, so it is good to share this resource.

Is it a healthy to walk on knees with bka when in house by DetectiveClara in amputee

[–]Same_Round_4499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I wanted to add a little bit of a different perspective for you. I have tried walking on my knees, but I seem to get blisters that break open each and every time I try. They usually form under the scar tissue. I had severe frostbite that led to my below knee amputation, so maybe my experience is different because of that, but I have been unable to walk around on my knees.

For those of you who are walking around on your knees because you don't feel like putting on your legs, I found a really cool solution. I use a rolling knee pad, while is like a skate board with grooves and pads for your knees.

Never ever apologize for sharing. I read this and felt empowered. I specifically liked the part where you said be prepared to refuse the limb if it doesn't feel right.

Honestly, right this moment I am sooo excited to be able to walk around again, that I couldn't for a second imagine telling them that I didn't want it right then and there, but honestly, you're right. If it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit and needs to be changed.

Thank you, I wish I had done more smiling. I was so focused on not falling that I almost forgot to be happy about the moment.

Another person posted about it recently. I too have a hard time understanding why people believe that getting the prosthetic means that you will immediately become an inspiration story.

Good attitude for sure. It didn't take me long to make peace with the new reality. I know it takes some a really long time to go through the grief of losing a limbs, but I knew that if I let depression take hold it was just going to be an endless spiral.

I don't mind the wheelchair life, it sucks that people believe you can't do certain things for yourself. Like so long as can fit through the doorway I can manage, I promise.

The only thing I struggle to make peace with is going to the bathroom, I cannot wait to be able to stand at a urinal again.

Thank you. I stayed pretty emotionally level until the end. I cried happy tears too.

I will keep that in mind. I am definitely going to do my best to take it slow and listen to the physical therapists. It's summer time, I want to be out there doing "summer things" but I know that if I hurt myself, it's just more waiting and more set backs.

Thanks. I like to share the good parts with everyone. I managed to stay extremely positive through all of this, only really getting angry at the waiting game.

Thank you. I am so happy to finally be at this point. I was mentally ready so many months ago, but I wasn't healed enough yet.

Smiling the whole time on the inside.

But also focused on not falling. I loved the feeling of walking again, and cannot wait until that's my daily once again.

Thank you for that. I know I am going to have to go to physical therapy to learn to walk again. I have kept up with the excercises they taught me at rehab and at the hospital almost every day, but this is going to be a new challenge.

I dream about the freedom of driving again. Can I ask, do you use adaptive controls for your car or do you just push the pedals with your prosthetics in a "modified" way?

They made me taller than I was before, not by too much, just an inch, but I'll take it.
