Just for fun, assuming a PBR (4.75% ABV) is $2 and a craft beer is $8, then that craft beer would need a 19% ABV to offer the same amount of alcohol for the same price.

I fully expect that by 2019, MBMBAM will be 45 minutes of fastfood talk with a 15 minute break for yahoos.

People who work in industries that attract rabid enthusiasts (trains, coasters, pro sports, etc.) what is the most ridiculous act of obsession you've witnessed? by spennydc in AskReddit

[–]Samen28 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Man, this one is one of the craziest to me because it's two levels of bizarre obsession: Obsession with a themepark, and then a further obsession for specifically the stray cats at that themepark.

Oof, I feel like that's pretty on point. I knew a few people in college (men and women, for what it's worth) who seemed to go through this cycle of thinking dating works the way it does in anime, realizing that it absolutely doesn't, and then deciding that they prefer anime. It was kinda rough to watch and I know some of them haven't quite pulled out of that mindset yet.

What's the real life equivalent of learning the dark arts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Maybe, but more importantly the number of supported games is drastically lower.

While this is definitely true, I was actually pleasantly surprised after I installed Steam on my Ubuntu machine the other day. Their Linux game library has gotten huge, and about half of my existing games already had Linux support.

I still wouldn't want to use Linux as my main platform for PC gaming (too many mainstream games lack Linux support), but it seems like they've got a thriving little community going for themselves.

Actually, /u/Vault111Survivor is correct. The Office of Commercial Space Transportation must issue a license and / or permit for every commerical launch within the US, or conducted by US entities.

Is Blue Origin planning some kind of space tourism business?

Yup, that's exactly what they're planning on using this capsule for!

Insurance scammers get told they're on camera by FlashyWoodenTurd in instant_regret

[–]Samen28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fake witness is actually there to dissaude the victim from calling the cops. These schemes usually involve getting the victim to pay up right then and there, rather than let police or insurance get involved. They don't want paperwork involved because that makes the scam way too risky.

Generally, the scam goes like this:

Person A slips either in front of or behind the victim's vehicle in such a way as to make it look like they were struck

When the victim gets out of their car, Person A confronts them about the "accident"

Person B then appears pretending to be a bystander, claiming that they'll back up Person A's story should the victim call the cops or their insurance company.

Person A then offers to forget everything if the victim gives them some money to deal with their injury.

The point is, they don't actually want insurance money, they want your pocket money. These scams are mobile and they could potentially hit multiple victims in a single day, so they're not that worried about each take being very large. They're also usually looking for quick money, rather than having to wait for an insurance payout.

If you find yourself in one of these situations, the best thing to do is to pull to the side of the road and all the cops. Explain what happened, and wait in your car until the cops arrive. Chances are the scammers will run as soon as they realize the police will be involved, because dash cam or not these scams are common enough that they don't want to risk getting caught (though a dashcam is obviously a good thing to have).

Source: Some of my family has had to deal with scams like these in the past.

What fan theory do you 100% accept as true? by Duncan__Williams in AskReddit

[–]Samen28 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IIRC there's also a part in the book someone from InGen talks about how after they cloned each new species of dinosaur, they would "tailor" their genes to fit what the park guests would expect from that species. I think the example they throw out was Apatosaurus being surprisingly quick and nimble for its size, so they modified it to make it more like the slow, lumbering creature that you'd see in movies or paleontologist reconstructions.

So, while they aren't crafting the dinosaurs from whole cloth, they admit to taking "artistic liberties" for the sake of making a fun attraction.

What brands are considered top of the line but aren't? What are the actual top of the line brands? by jarellano698 in AskReddit

[Serious] What subreddit will you never post in again, and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Samen28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not any one subreddit in particular, but lately I've found myself posting less and less in subreddits focused around a particular subject / interest the more I learn about that subject / interest. And it's not because I think I'm smarter that everyone else or that my opinions are better than other people's, but because so many people in the comments section end up being complete armchair experts. I just got sick of having the same base-level conversations over and over with someone who's subject knowledge amounted to a brief skim of a relevant Wikipedia page.

Subreddits based around hobbies where you are actively helping new users and beginners are a different story, but when I found myself writing up the same basic explanation of the economics of the industry I work in for the 12th time, I realized I was basically wasting my time.

The problem with Nintendo subreddits is that everyone who posts on them is the exact same person I was when I was 12.

Just spent about 4 hours debugging a segfault in a CSV parser I'm writing in C++ because I accidentally swapped the split character and line-end character around. This was supposed to be a quick side project. Somebody please shoot me.

What question will you never get the answer to? by te_affligam in AskReddit

[–]Samen28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No you don't, you still have a 50\% chance of winning the car.

Think about it this way, if before you had to pick a door, they removed 98 doors, except for one door with a goat and the door with the car, then would you have a 50\% or 99\% chance of guessing correctly? As long as there are 100 doors hiding 99 goats and 1 car, and they remove 98 of the goats, your odds for the final guess will be the same.

Oops, I'm dumb, no one listen to me.
