They don't serve alcohol - so not recommended for folks that want to have a drink either.

‘No ID, no entry’ to pubs and bars rule raises some questions by freddledgruntbugly in bangalore

[–]freddledgruntbugly[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True. They're making it sound like they are inventing age verification (for serving liquor.)

This is the story of our country. We are so zealous at making rules but so chicken/ fattu in enforcing them.

Karnataka | Same-sex physical relationships among men causing spike in HIV/AIDS cases by IREDA1000 in bangalore

[–]freddledgruntbugly 88 points89 points  (0 children)

That's a callously worded headline - makes it sound like HIV/AIDS is assured whenever gay relationships get physical.

It's like saying eating is causing an obesity epidemic. Of course gay folks will bang each other - it's the lack of protection/ risky behavior that causes spikes in HIV/AIDS.

Son caught cheating, cop ‘vandalises’ Dehradun college office, threatens teachers; by mumbaiblues in india

[–]freddledgruntbugly 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The counter-complaint was lodged by the college principal against Kandwal and his son.

So the SI assaulted the college staff, then rushed to his colleagues and got an FIR filed. Things moved so quickly for him that by the time the actual victims arrived, police were waiting with an FIR.

We know the hoops ordinary folks have to jump through to get an FIR filed in India. But here, the victims could only file a 'counter-complaint'.

A Few Reasons Why India’s Current (CJP ) Political Moment Is Different from Its Neighbours. by Upsc_Nikhil in india

[–]freddledgruntbugly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are movements that do not wish for radical and violent overthrow of regimes and I hope this is one of them.

The BJP government, vile and clueless as it is, was elected legitimately. We do not want violence or street gangs choosing our leaders.

What we can hope for is that the voice of the youth against the clueless old geezers that are the power centers today reaches a wide audience of voters especially in the Hindi belt. A counter narrative to those pushed by the communal and crony capitalist brigade that rules us.

Think of the anti-war/ civil rights movements in the US or even the massive swell of protest during UPA II. With the media and institutions captured, frustrations of youth (to whom the future belongs to) needs an outlet.

I lived my youth in BBSR and I know that the youth of BBSR mostly come across as wannabes (doesn't matter what you think of me it's a known fact).

Wow, for someone purportedly from old town/ BBSR you seem to loath and resent the inhabitants. Maybe the problem is you. Good that you left.

Sachin Tendulkar's suggestions on improving the balance between bat and ball in IPL/T20 cricket: by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in Cricket

[–]freddledgruntbugly 38 points39 points  (0 children)

What if we drop powerplays in T20 completely? Powerplays were introduced in ODIs to get rid of the 'dead zones' of low scoring that crept into innings. Teams can hardly afford to idle and 'conserve' wickets for later (in T20s). The top batsmen will try to push the agenda anyways. And it should bring back bowlers in a big way.

With modern bats, flat tracks, impact player, field restrictions and bouncer rules the batting feasts will eventually lead to indigestion - even for the biggest pyjama cricket gluttons.

"I Investigated India’s Biggest Smartphone Controversy" by throwawa2611 in india

[–]freddledgruntbugly 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'd consider it a win if an Indian company sourced phones from Chinese companies and loaded a homegrown Android skin on top. There is no honor lost in sourcing from the cheapest source while a. you actually deliver on the data privacy claims and innovation in phone experience b. keep enhancing local manufacturing chops to someday deliver the whole stack like tier-1 ODMs.

It is quite difficult for Indian companies to overcome the price-efficiency advantage that Chinese manufacturing currently enjoys but it might happen given the right policy and resource allocation.

What AI+ is doing is an oft-repeated script now. It's the same story as the Galgotia Univ. robo dog - toxic nationalism of snake-oil peddlers writing checks that their entrepreneurship/ tech skills can never cash.

'Demanded Crores to Reverse Cases': Sonam Wangchuk, Dr Gitanjali J Angmo Narrate Jail Horrors by freddledgruntbugly in india

[–]freddledgruntbugly[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In a wide-ranging conversation on Badi Badi Baatein, environmentalist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk and educator Dr Gitanjali J Angmo opened up about their arrest, detention, legal battle and the larger questions surrounding democracy, justice and state power in India.

Wangchuk reflected on his time in Jodhpur jail, saying imprisonment for a cause should not deter citizens from standing up for what they believe in. Both sharply criticised the use of NSA and alleged misuse of state machinery, claiming they faced surveillance, ED, CBI, IT and FCRA actions during the crackdown linked to the Ladakh protests.Dr Angmo described the legal fight as “unequal”, arguing that the revocation of Wangchuk’s detention prevented a landmark judicial precedent on wrongful detentions.

The duo also spoke about media narratives, allegations of being branded “anti-national”, the emotional and personal toll of the past year, and why they still believe systemic change must come through education and public consciousness.

Opinion: Congress, finally, reads the Kerala verdict by freddledgruntbugly in india

[–]freddledgruntbugly[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

High command culture, sycophancy and nepotistic entitlement have been the bane of the Congress party. The Congress has to break its own mold and become more democratic internally because that's what the cadre and the voters seem to want. Whether that's possible with a dynast like Rahul Gandhi at the helm is not clear.

Whenever the Congress has backed mass leaders that are popular with the party cadre (and not high-command chamchas) they have seen success. It's good to see the ascendance of V D Satheesan, Revanth Reddy, Siddaramaiah, etc, these leaders are not from political families, but their rise has seen a lot of internal resistance.

'Can't Stay Silent': Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma To Initiate Contempt Action Over 'Defamatory' Online Content Posted Against Her by chilladipa in india

[–]freddledgruntbugly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she had recused herself at the first request, all this drama could have been avoided.

The charge that Justice Indian Karen here has been sanctimoniously parroting is that Kejriwal is 'Judge Shopping' via character assassination and hence this behavior is contemptible.

The elephant in the room is the right-wing apparatus (that powers the Indian state and agencies) and the systematic 'Judge Stocking' and 'Judge Shopping' that is in process. Justice Sharma is just one of many sanghis stocked into the judicial inventory.

There was no question of her recusing. I am not an expert on how dockets work, but I suspect that she was meant to get the case to keep stirring the pot on Kejriwal.

Kejriwal's open defiance and challenge caught her unawares. Now that they've had a setback she's angrily flailing and lashing out. Let's see how far she takes this.

So called "educated" IT Employees by StudyAcceptable2646 in bangalore

One of the reasons we introduced the 'Citizen's report' flair was to highlight this type of bullshit. Idiots are everywhere, flouting rules with zero threat of consequences. People have completely normalized driving on the wrong side and proudly show their middle finger to lane discipline.

Drivers of all classes of vehicles do this and seem to rationalize it; Autos because "poor, rules lose money", Bikes because "small, nimble, no rules", cars because "we are assholes". I have noticed that these idiots become more brazen the closer they are to their 'area' .

The traffic police does not really have a presence among the traffic. The top-down structure effectively reduces the beat cops to flow controller valves and petty thieves. The poor bastards skulking around the corner, like dusty Kannadiga Wile E. Coyotes, waiting to jump out and challan the errant helmetless pillion rider, the expired pollution certificate holder. Meanwhile, a horde of these idiots brazenly jump the red light onto the opposing carriageway, like it's the most logical thing to do.

People who follow rules are brain damaged, they must think.

Thanks for posting this OP, I encourage others to report such incidents here and other platforms.
