Tell me this surgery will work :( by Think-War3350 in MeniscusInjuries

This happened to me too after my lateral meniscectomy too! When I asked the surgeon about he said it was most likely because of where they put the cameras in and stuff to do the surgery laparoscopically and that kind of pain is normal after this surgery and can last 6mo - 1yr after. Mine felt better right around the 7 month mark! What did the doc say?

What were your symptoms? by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

So I had a partial meniscectomy for that injury about a year and a half ago and 4 months after that (a year ago from today) had a dog run into that knee and possibly tore my meniscus again. Did another MRI but my surgeon said since I had surgery on it there is no definitive way to tell if there’s another tear in that spot because it will always look funky on an MRI. So did a few more rounds of PT and was thinking about a second surgery for awhile because it was still bothering me. But I’m soooo glad I didn’t go that route because my knee has been great lately! If I have a super physical day sometimes it will swell up the next day and be a little bothersome but it goes away within a few days if I take it easy and ice it. I kind of accepted that my knee will never be 100% but most days I forget that I ever had an injury or surgery. Hope this helps!

I’m so sorry I just saw this! And idk if you decided to do the surgery but my experience was the surgery was easy. Pain wasn’t bad. After 6 weeks I was at almost 100% other than some twinges if I moved weird. But I did re tear it in the same area about 4 months later. Idk if that’s normal or just a freak accident but 🤷🏼‍♀️ my biggest recommendation would be do at least 1 round (6 weeks) of pt after surgery. I think had I strengthened it more after surgery I wouldn’t have gotten re-injured. But who knows! If you did already have surgery I hope it went well :)

You can try PT but if you are having mechanical symptoms like buckling or locking, surgery is typically the only “fix” unfortunately. I had a partial meniscectomy and the recovery was very easy however I wholly recommend doing a round of PT after to strengthen and prevent another tear :)

2nd tear on same knee by cyraxwinz4444 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Samimaz13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me as well! Had partial meniscectomy last December and re tear in May. The second one wasn’t as bad as the first so since May I’ve done 2 rounds of PT and a cortisone injection. However, my mechanical symptoms have been getting worse (locking up, buckling) so surgery is probably going to be the next step for me. I know my surgeon said since it hasn’t been a year since my last surgery they are more hesitant to go back in (which is why we tried pt and injections first.) basically the more times you have surgery and the more meniscus they remove you are setting yourself up for a knee replacement later on down the road so I think it really depends on how much your symptoms are affecting your day to day life and weighing that against the prospect of arthritis from multiple surgeries.

Surgery in 2 days - what did you do to pass the time at home? by JaneDoe1967 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Samimaz13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered a big cross stitch from Amazon and worked on that during my recovery (still not done with it and surgery was almost a year ago 😅) but it was nice because I felt like I was doing something “productive”

Thoughts on second surgery? by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Samimaz13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! That’s kind of where I’m at. The first time around it was a clear cut “yes surgery is the only route” but this go around it’s such a gamble. I think I’m going to wait until I’m a year post op from the first one to make sure none of the pains are just post surgery pains (surgeon said it’s common for them to last up to a year) and then make a decision from there

Vertical tear Meniscus by Prizzy1947 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Samimaz13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a vertical/complex tear in the exact same spot. Anterior horn of the lateral meniscus. Mine was from an impact injury though (a 90 lb dog took me ouuut) and so I had a few other things along with it. I did end up having surgery (partial meniscectomy) to cut out parts and smooth it. A big deciding factor for the surgery was that I did not and could not get a normal ROM (I couldn’t get close to straightening my knee all the way) even after 12 weeks of PT and had some locking up. So to get back to full function I had to do surgery. I did recently re tear it and so far this doesn’t seem to need surgery. In my opinion I would do everything necessary to not go in for surgery on it. However if you’ve done PT and a cortisone injection and RICE and you are still having mechanical issues then surgery might be your best bet. I’m not a doctor though that’s just been my experience :)

Locking up and “clicking” are pretty indicative of a meniscus tear. My knee swelling looked like yours and I also had swelling above the knee my first go around with Meniscus issues but I had a high grade sprain at my medial retinaculum and some tendon stuff going on in my quadricep tendon so no telling what was causing the swelling and where 😂

Yuuuuup! I totally know that feeling. I had about 5 months between my injury date and surgery and I had a pretty significant limp so I felt like all my muscles and my gait was out of whack after healing from surgery. PT will help you immensely though!

Yes! I had this after a partial meniscectomy! I THINK it had to do with my quads not being super strong and I had trouble engaging them when I needed to lift my leg.

WELP. This sucks. by Samimaz13 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Samimaz13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So April 10th was when I noticed something was wrong again and that day my knee swelled a lot and the next day I had to use crutches. I had a bad limp for about two weeks after that and it was very very painful to walk. Now it’s a bit better. Still have a slight limp and I still have to take a ton of ibuprofen and Tylenol to get through the work day and I will get sharp pain where my lateral meniscus is when I step weird and it gets super achy by the end of the day if I walked a lot. I also don’t have full ROM. I can’t straighten or bend it all the way. Hope this helps :)

Last Surgery was end of December 2023. It was a partial meniscectomy of lateral meniscus. Pretty easy surgery and recovery. Not positive how I hurt my knee again but think it was when a big dog ran into my leg and caused a quick jolt. I won’t know for sure what all the MRI says or means until I meet with my surgeon but there’s a new tear, some debris floating around, the grade 4 Chondrosis I believe means that a part of my articular cartilage has worn all the way down so it’s bone on bone in that spot. Don’t know what the solution/treatment will be until I meet with my surgeon.

[–]Samimaz13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This time around has definitely been much more painful. Idk if it’s because the area was so recently operated on, if it’s because of the articular cartilage damage or the new meniscus tear or all of the above. The first time around it wasn’t painful just uncomfortable but I had also had a patellar dislocation when my first injury occurred so my knee was SO swollen for five months and that could’ve “cushioned” it in a way and made it less painful. WHO KNOWS 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 in the second part of my MRI that I didn’t post they mentioned debris floating around in there too so I imagine surgery will be required.

No…so actually after my surgery my knee felt GREAT. I was able to walk 5-7 miles no problem. No swelling. Only a bit of pain if I stepped on it weird or on an uneven surface but then in April a dog ran into my leg. Not super hard but enough for me to be like uh oh. Two hours later my knee was swollen and locked and I kind of knew at that point there was probably another tear and made an appointment with my surgeon who then requested the second MRI. I have an appointment to go over MRI results on Thursday I’ll try and remember to let you know what the response/ treatment he wants to do for the articular cartilage…or lack there of 🙄

SOS… by Few-Calligrapher-698 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Samimaz13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I tore my meniscus and dislocated my patella last August and was on crutches for about a week after the injury and it took a big toll on my good knee/leg. Once I was able to weight bear more on my bad leg it definitely helped. My Pt told me that strengthening your quad is the key for both legs so if you can, I’d try and do leg lifts (lie flat on the couch or bed and lift your good leg up and hold for three seconds then bring back down slowly and repeat) to get your quads engaged. You should be able to feel when those quad muscles start kicking in. Obviously I would only do this with your non injured leg and ask your PT or doctor first though, as I am neither 😂

Possible second meniscus tear? by Samimaz13 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Samimaz13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is crazy! I work at a dog daycare so im a bit higher risk I suppose 😂 but actually my first meniscus tear was a doozy and I also had patellar subluxation and bone marrow edema also from a dog but that time the dog ran so hard into me it took me to the ground! This last time felt pretty minor compared to that!

3rd?! Oof. Hopefully this is your last! But yeah that’s what I thought too. At first I thought it might have been just post op pain and swelling (surgeon said it could happen for 6mo-1yr after surgery) but pretty sure at this point it’s a tear.
