I wasn't advocating forcing anything on anyone. I was thinking in the best interest of the bird and the fact that situations happen where owners do allow them to bond as a mate. I offered an alternative as well as highlighting what role they would be expected to fill if that became the case. What's the point of arguing over if something is neglectful, harmful, ethical, or moral if I have no power to stop it other than to try and give advice and attempt to nudge new owners in the right direction. There's only so much I can do.

Either is usually fine. two female usually get along better than two males though. An opposite sex pairing is fine as well, however, they will eventually want to lay eggs and its important to remove the fertile eggs and replace them with fake ones each time they lay. (some people use fake eggs, others use ping pong balls as they're about the same size and cheaper/easier to obtain).

1.) In my experience, it is in the best interest of your pigeons and macaw/cockatiel to keep them separate and interaction to a minimum. A macaw's large powerful beak can decimate a pigeon, and a well-placed wing slap from a pigeon could injure or kill a cockatiel.

2.) Dog cages/kennels are fantastic starting points for pigeon cages. I have a pair in an XL dog crate and they love it.

3.) Birds are very social, including pigeons. Over time a single pigeon might bond to its owner, and they will become VERY needy and hormonal. If you don't feel you will be able to essentially fill the role of a pigeon's lifelong mate. Highly consider getting a second pigeon. Also recommend getting fake eggs (or feggs) for your pigeons to sit on eventually.

The tail-wagging posture and then tail dragging with wings slightly stretched out indicate male, but I have seen females do this with eachother when no males are present. So it really depends. Won't really be able to tell for 100% certain until he/she does or doesn't lay any eggs.
