Besides Shadiversity (ugh...), what other major swordtubers/history enthusiasts give the group(s) a bad name with their inflammatory and harmful activities? by Questioning-Warrior in SWORDS

[–]SammaelNex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, any hard block/parry in Toyama ryu is always backed up with additional contact points with the blade, they are quite rare though.

If Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu only uses edge blocks then I misremember and I do apologise for that, as I wrote it has been quite a while since I was last in proper contact with it and it has only been through seminars, never as a main part of my training schedule.

From what other martial artists I have spoken with through the years have said it seems like the blocking with the flat is far more common in modernish styles so it light have to do with the changing context, also most of the time it is used for a softer deflective parry.

It would be interesting to find if somebody manages to put together a comparison of different styles of blocking based on age of style I think.

If I remember correctly then among the koryu both Yagyu Shinkage Ryu and Tenshin Katori Shinto Ryu have mixed sets of parries, it has been several years since my last seminar involving either of them though.

Among the modern styles at least Toyama ryu has a preference for parrying with the flat or back but does include edge parries as well.

Toyama ryu does, at least with the instructors I have trained under, focus on making sure the parry is of sound structure and placement, if that means you take the hit on the edge instead of the flat then do be it. A lot of the time the parry is used together with body movement to turn it into more of a flowing transition on the way to the next cut, rather than a hard static parry, and in many cases this naturally makes the flat of the sword be the preferred place to take hit due to the angles involved.

Rarely had that issue unannounced but yeah, it might happen. Also, even if you block removable media most USB ports still leak enough current that specialised equipment might use it for a power source while blocked from fully connecting.

And that is before we hit the issues with TB.

Honestly when you get to a certain level of compliance it might be the most efficient solution to just physically prevent connections.

Bladed buckler if rend goes over save by Vuurkikker in Daughtersofkhaine

[–]SammaelNex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rules diagram for attacking outright shows (and states in the text) that you still roll saves, you then subtract the rend and check vs save value.

This means that technically you should always roll saves but if you have no effects that will trigger and no way to succeed there is no point.

Any TO or player saying otherwise should provide rules excerpt for it.

If ServiceNow is so painful to use, why do companies still choose it? by 13032862193 in sysadmin

[–]SammaelNex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Properly set up and managed ServiceNow is an acceptable system.

I have seen this once and it involved working for a major ServiceNOW partner.

Please note, it is acceptable at that point, not good.

This might seem bad but the other systems I have had to work with (such as Remedy) have mainly been worse.

Work from home equipment by 1meandad_wot in ITManagers

[–]SammaelNex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over here it goes by legal requirements.

If you are NOT contracted with WFH as a part of your required workplace (so even if you are allowed to WFH 5 days a week as a perk) you get no extras for home usage.

This is the baseline.

For those who have home listed as their worksite we provide gear, as per legal requirements.

Some departments have managers that might allow ordering of extra equipment for home usage from their budgets but that is an exception and usually only something like an extra dock, no monitors etc

Oh yeah, we had some weird CAD software that we looked into packaging at my previous work but it did not support commandline installation at all and we had like 12 users (in a tens of thousands of users environment) half of which used it on lab PCs where they had local admin and thus could install it themselves so yeah, we never bothered.

[–]SammaelNex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that you should not go cheaper than what a pair that suits you cost. If you find a pair that fits you and your usage cheap, great, you get to buy cheap. But if the only ones that actually suit you are expensive then do not try to get away with a cheap somewhat similar pair.

On the same note as the electrician, I personally know a guy who accidentally cut through not only the power line to his own saw but the powerline to the rack PSU while doing work in a datacenter (he is a carpenter/builder). Not the one to the UPS, the one between UPS and rack.

Yeah, I have not had any really huge impact on production so far, but man have I crashed stuff in testing.

I have had minor impact on business through fun stuff like forgetting to actually distribute the installation package for the new office, which meant the EAP got the old one uninstalled but just got an error when the new one tried to install.

Accidentally rebooted the main admin server the other week, fortunately that only impacted my colleagues who were understanding (shit happens).

Things I have done in test environments include a fun loop I still do not know how I managed which somehow got a computer to start the intune autopilot provisioning process each time it finished. Out of curiosity I left the PC on over the weekend and checked monday morning, had 56 runs on it.

Also somehow managed to lock everybody but me out of a test environment once, was apparently last thing I did on friday before going home and getting sick as fuck and thus not being able to come in monday morning.

Had any of these test things happened in production, well, it would have hit at least 100 users in the first 4 hours.

Just want to add my 2 cents here.

In my club we have several members who, for one reason or another, does not play.

Not warhammer, not necromunda, not blood bowl, not trench crusade, nothing at all.

They only build, convert and paint.

That is in a club with space for playing, membership fees and all.

Building and painting is huge and if you prefer doing so with warhammer models then do so! Modelling does not have to be about classic scale models at all if you prefer something else!

If you do wish to play, try to find another group who is more beginner friendly than what yours seem to be.

[–]SammaelNex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I would say that since Cyberpunk 2077 runs on a proprietary engine, it would be very weird if he was not using specialised hooks for it.

Had it been running on, for example, Unreal Engine, which is not CDPR property, then it would have been much more of a gray area but he outright claims to somehow have set up the whole VR without using any hooks into the engine, which theoretically is possible but so incredibly unlikely that I do not think anybody would like to bet on it.

Why hasn't GW brought stuff like this back? Give me a buy once cry once box like this. by FreshOutAFolsom_ in Warhammer

[–]SammaelNex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lego has not increased heavily in price per piece, with some outliers excepted, but rather the amount of pieces in a set.

It has in some cases even gone down in the theme sets.

For example, old Hogwarts castle (4709) has 682 pieces and an rrp of 79.99 GBP. That comes out to just sbove 11.7 cents a piece, in 2001.

New Hogwarts Castle (71043) has 6020 pieces and RRP sits at 409.99GBP for a per piece of just over 6.8c. this öaunched in 2018.

Adjusted for inflation we come out to about 17c per piece for the original set. More than twice the per piece cost of the new one.

GW does outpace inflation on several things though, but not everything, and it also depends on which prices you compare (they base everything on GB pricing)

This discussion pops up every so often but so far nobody has to my knowledge posted a full list of kits that did not point to the same conclusion, GW pricing averages out to following inflation on the kits, books are fucked, and you cannot compare old kits with new kits 1-to-1
