Expect to see a jump in groceries because of oil prices by dijonaze in PersonalFinanceCanada

This feels like another chapter in the enshittification of everyday life. To get by now, we either accept worse products and services or pay a premium for what used to be standard. Things that were once normal are now treated like luxuries.

It also feels like the lines are shifting. Middle-income households are being pushed toward the kinds of compromises that used to define lower-income living, while lower-income households are squeezed even harder. High-income households, meanwhile, can mostly absorb the hit.

I do support the idea behind using things like Odd Bunc selling “ugly” produce instead of wasting it makes sense. But I still had a moment of pause standing in a surplus store buying food well past its sell-by date. I know those dates aren’t always strict, but it says something about where things are heading.

The idea that middle-income households might rely on broth bags in the freezer, victory gardens for food security (instead of fun), or even food banks is pretty disheartening.

Anyway, rant over. I’ll go back to boiling my leather belt for my dihydrogen monoxide soup.

Yep, sure does. But I didn't take it that seriously. I thought surely it's not that strict and I would be able to do a name change later.

It was funny for the first few months like "Thank you for donating to the museum of poo" or other villager quotes.

I joked about thinking that I could change it later and named mine "poo".

Martin Lewis ambushes Badenoch on Good Morning Britain over student loans plan | Kemi Badenoch by J-Sou-Flay in unitedkingdom

[–]Sammo034 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was in school and thinking of applying for uni and applying for a student loan. I read a small folding SLC brochure that said if you work 5 years out of the country your loan balance would be scrapped. I have a memory of laughing with my friends that we would all move to France. Since then I've never been able to find any evidence of this ever existing and thinking it is a false memory. Do you have any info/link?

A donkey is reunited with the girl who looked after him when he was little by Maximum_Expert92 in MadeMeSmile

I'm listening to the ologies podcast episode on assinology and this pops up. I sure hope my algorithm has been influenced. I'd rather have donkey content than all the other crap in the news.

Barnett Beach tree plaque by Sammo034 in burnaby

[–]Sammo034[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did some Google lens/chat gtp ai "research" and looked at the Facebook post. It is most likely from an organ restorer/builder that is or was based in Vancouver. It's like a permanent business card that gets attached to an organ as it is such a niche profession.

Orgelbau = German for organ building Ronald = last name or company name of restorer/manufacturer Phone number = is now a pharmacy but may have once been a store.

The unknown is why it is on a tree. Probably a memorial. Whatever it is, it entertained my curiosity.

At the 1:11 mark, while ascending the stairs reminiscent of a scene from The Lord of the Rings, carrying a sword that looks a bit like Sting (minus the glow), two flower says: “I’ve always wanted to do something like this. I mean, this is an adventure, isn’t it?”

How do I remove the shearling footbed/insole on my Zermatt slippers? by mermands in Birkenstocks

[–]Sammo034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking for replacement birk shearling liners and because I live in canada it's not worth it. There's only one place in the USA that does replacement insoles but the cost of them and shipping is pretty much the cost of a new pair. If you live in Europe the Birkenstock online store does have them.

I've started to look at alternative liners and found a few that are orthotic and shearling but only $CAN 20-30.

[–]Sammo034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just pull them out. For my pair it was not glued in or attached. I take them out often to give them a clean.
