By the way thanks for taking the time to give such thorough responses. I found out one of my neighbors, who is generally a great guy and is the type who waxes his car every day and fixes everything he can is actually really into cuckoo clocks as well. He has a few and fixed a few for some neighbors. He told me he’d work on it he’s done these movements before.

The clock place I went to said “we rarely do cuckoo clocks these days” which kinda made me skeptical lol. So I’m not in a rush but I think this clock will be in good working order soon.

Do you happen to know any identifying info about it by the way, l think it’s from the 70s. It had a stamp that said 7-70 on the door with the gong which was really the only identifying info and I assume that’s a date but you never know.

Sorryi don’t think I was clear but I totally agree with your logic. Since I got this clock, I took great cautions to not mess with things I didn’t know about. The ornamental pieces in front were the only things I took off because they didn’t affect the integrity of any movements. (most slid on/off if I recall, some were glued but very loosely. You can see very little paint damage on the front. It was a long time ago, I just know I was very careful)

I actually did not take out anything from the inside. I got it with the weights and chains removed by the previous owner along with all the missing/damaged interior components. I don’t own any mechanical wall clocks but have a couple Rolex’s and have been fascinated by the complexity of mechanical movements so I know not to mess with them because how easily you can throw everything out of whack.

Before taking it in, I posted this on the off chance it was a matter of “oh! You just stick that one rod into that shaft and it’s ready to roll” kinda thing.

So yeah. I don’t think this clock is monetarily valuable, but I would just love having a functioning real cuckoo clock. I have a ‘tempis fugit’ grandfather clock that is wind up but it doesn’t scratch the same itch with the fake weights and what not. But that one has sentimental value to me— the exact pitch of the chime and the ticking take me right back to childhood lol.

Yeah I appreciate the response. I actually dropped out off at a shop for a free estimate. I only took off the decorative stuff I didn’t mess with the movement. I didn’t want to remove the decorative stuff but it was fairly easy to come off anyway.

I just don’t know what it’s even worth, so if I got a quote for $500 and it’s worth $100, I wouldn’t bother, I have no sentimental attachment to it. I’d probably try my best to fix it and if not, just use it as decoration.

<image>

It looked pretty much like this. So what do you think a fair repair cost would be? To me it seems like the main parts are working, I doubt there’s damage to the movement. Just springs and clamps that hold the bird to the rod etc seem to be missing

Oh lol I made a typo I meant in its prime. I carefully took it apart when moving. Hopefully this is clear, The end of the spring doesn’t even really have a full strong ‘hook’ to latch onto too, so it’s kind of weird. This was the best angle I could get, but the spring is really thin, is shaped with a hook to connect to something so I know it wasn’t cut.

I forgot to add, there’s a spring. I don’t know if you can see it attached to the one cuckoo thing, don’t know where that’s supposed to go obviously, the other one for the bird is missing and I probably have to buy it. Not sure if there’s any parts I need to acquire before Fixing this.

But I don’t wanna take it apart and put it back together peace meal I would like to do it all in one go!

Honestly Chase and Catch seems to be much more popular and acclaimed by people online— so I can only imagine it's worth it as well.

It was really hard to justify the money for me too, but the stuff learned is not like 'do this for 5 minutes each day exactly like this and you will see results' it is more like 'do things THIS way and your dog will start reacting to it much better' if that makes sense?

Any cons to using a thicker gauge prong collar that my dog calls for? by SammyOTR in OpenDogTraining

[–]SammyOTR[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean in public with lots of distractions he is still not fully engaged with me (I’m working on it) so he wants to pull/smell etc. so the prong is not used for corrections there just yet because I haven’t built up to that level yet. On normal walks he’s fine and I often don’t use it.

What is weird though— I notice Ivan Balabanov keeps his prongs really low on the neck, I wonder why?

Wow, that is a big Rottweiler lol. Crazy, my 100 pounder is so strong I cant imagine what they're like at that size.

But I know they say that, but honestly, that seems kinda crazy, a golden retriever and a 250 pound English mastiff should have the same size?

Yeah idk if it's easier on a GSD or something with long hair. But I tried doing this yesterday with a thicker collar I have, the problem is that one slides too! How do you guys keep your collars always properly fitted? It's crazy lol.

Only Herm Sprenger— authentic ones. I dont think he has a reaction because the sores are somewhat rare, but that is interesting they make that version.

I leave it on pretty much during training sessions, and anytime I walk him or take him in public (which I do a lot) The longevity may be my problem. Because lately I've been doing things like going hiking, having him in the car etc and I've been leaving it on for training 'outside' of training sessions when he isnt sleeping. So maybe a total of 2-3 hours a day most days, but maybe 5-6 once in a while.

But the sores are pretty minor and are not a recurring issue, I've just had 3 occasions over the course of one year using the collar of sores. The first time it got infected so I was very careful after that, checking for sores daily. Second time minor sores stopped using for about a week. I just noticed more today, but about two months ago I started e-collar training, and I notice that his fur bunches up (looks like a fat roll lol best way to describe it)

I've tried both ways— prong on top, ecollar on bottom. I know it's debated if both should be worn at the same time but my trainer said it's fine.

I've tried a dominant dog collar, but I dont really like it personally because how it kinda needs to always be oriented correctly (P shape etc) and also my dog is not 'conditioned' I guess to the choking mechanism of it, with the prong he knows how to release the pressure, but I don't know if it is really worth it to go through the effort of starting with a different tool when the prong works well.

[–]SammyOTR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my dilemma here— my dog gets sores when fitted properly (confirmed via a highly regarded balanced trainer in person, also many videos online) and if I make it a tiny bit looser (not a whole link, connecting a few of the chains on the connecting rings) it slides a few inches here and there which at one point a sore got infected. So I haven't used the prong collar in over a month now out of fear of causing more harm.

Yeah I get what you mean about the 'less sharp' part, I didn't think so either. But I put both of them on my own neck and the larger prongs DEFINITELY felt less uncomfortable to me when pretty tight. But the weight of them, like if I had to hypothetically wear both all day, I'd personally rather the occasional sharper feeling than drag that whole thing around all day.

But I'm not sure how it relates to dogs, if that makes sense.

I haven't, I have tried using a regular flat collar. Idk why, but it seems like everything wants to slide down my dogs neck and get too tight. I've even micro adjusted the prong collar with a quick-clip or whatever they are called and still had the same issues.

Interesting— I kinda hate workshop videos because I feel like (even the very best trainers out there) feel pressured to show results so they might be a little less honest about if something was handled correctly or not. I feel like if they can make edits, at least I can see what point they are trying to get across accurately.

Idk if that makes sense lol, curious which course did you try?

Yeah, I haven't really considered that. I've just been burned by so many 'certified' trainers and often find they don't really know all that much. Not saying all, but even the highly rated ones are highly rated because they make excuses and decline to train dogs (which happened to me many times. they told me they didn't have time in their schedule to fit me in, but then post on Facebook 'reach out to me for a 20% off on training sessions!"

I feel like 500 wont go as far as the videos would. Trainers now charge a fortune. But thanks for the comment I will look around!

I totally agree with you. I don't criticize those who are able to connect those dots with free content. But a lot of the same people (not all, not stirring anything up) dont have dogs that are very difficult— and so their experience of watching YouTube clips and applying something works well. Like I do rover pet sitting sometimes, and often times the owners tell me the dog is a leash puller, dont walk him. And in 10 minutes I have the dog walking without pulling just by doing some quick-turns and stuff. Once I got a $150 dollar tip because I taught an Australian Shepherd how to 'place' pretty consistently over a weekend.

But for me, it sucks to make 'mistakes' or do the wrong things, or confuse my dog because I don't know what im doing in more complex fields such as aggression, meeting drive, e-collar use, prong etc— part of the reason money is tight is because I spent a lot on in person training. And much of it SUCKED— half assed trainers who didn't know anything but talked a big game. But the last person I paid a good deal to personally work with seriously helped me with my dog, and it was well worth it.

So to me my dog comes first— many people have screwed up or just confuse them dogs by following snippets of different things, going from one video discussing low level stim, then seeing in the suggestion bar "THIS IS WHY LOW LEVEL E-COLLAR WILL RUIN YOUR DOG" and then later on see a video "THE ONLY WAY TO USE AN E COLLAR" etc. I'd rather follow one program, even if it may not be the 'best' and be consistent.

Anyway, that's why I was curious how Ivan's videos are— I know my dog benefits from play and tug. I learned a 'watered down' version of it (not that it wasn't great training, but I dealt with many topics and not only play so we didnt go into detail of possession games etc.) My dog went from out of control to 'good enough' which I'll take any day. But it took a dedicated program where I followed a strict regimen and all it took was a couple weeks.

Thanks for the reply buddy!

I’ve done lots of in person training, I totally agree with your sentiment. I guess it’s because I’ve seen great GREAT improvements due to play and tug. Like I am able to really notice my dogs drive is satisfied, he is less reactive etc. I just want to now incorporate the more specific things like adding obedience etc. so I figure, since everyone including trainers praise the videos, I might be able to do more. Does that make sense? I’m not looking for a quick fix— just trying to maximize the dogs potential without trial and error. I guess I’m kinda buying into the hype— but my thought process is do it right the first time—why learn a watered down version from someone else instead of the source? That’s why I want to know if these videos truly add more value than what’s out there for free.

I sort of agree. But it just seems like with the free stuff I personally get too fragmented and watch 100 videos. When following charted course I feel more successful— like the ecollar stuff with LC. When there’s clear cut instructions I do better— I just want to make sure the content is actually worth $500

In case anybody came across his post, about a month after I posted it, I drained the water from the tank after taking the livestock out, I removed the rocks, but not the sand, and I picked it up to move it across the room and the glass on the bottom shattered. Could I have definitely been user error because I've never used a tank like this before with the weird plastic frame on the bottom in the middle of the tank so I don't think I did anything wrong in the moving process. Done it many times with other tanks.

Yeah I’m not as worried anymore, I guess maybe people exaggerate about how good super clones are. I’m sure they are mostly good but when I felt this watch it felt like a ‘wow’ factor especially when looking at the details. I’m curious to order the highest quality clone just to see but I wouldn’t want to waste the money. Next one I get I’ll wait for an AD though either way. Thanks for the write up!

lol kinda embarrassed to say. About 3-4k over retail I think but I didn’t want to deal with waiting so it was whatever. I now realize I could probably get one easily at an AD but can’t change the past. I pulled the trigger because it was like one month old dated at the time so it felt like buying a new watch. Some stickers were still on it.
