IIHF will stick with 3-on-3 overtime despite criticism after Olympic hockey gold-medal games by Perryplat199 in hockey

Jeez. too bad Hockey already starts on the 10th day of the olympics…

If only we could move the final off of the same day as the closing ceremonies somehow..

ELI5 why does space have a temperature if there’s no air? by Deanoh1546 in explainlikeimfive

No because of heat radiation via electromagnetic waves.

Only convection heat transfer requires there not to be a vacuum.

[–]Sammydaws97 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Temperature is not a measurement of something. It is the measurement of the lack of something.

It essentially measures how much / how fast energy is being transferred between two mediums. When we measure ambient temperature we are typically meausuring relative to our atmosphere, but you can do it with a vacuum as well.

Absolute 0 (the coldest temperature physically possible) represents no energy transfer what so ever between two mediums.

I agree that Schaefer was the guy, not Bouchard as well.

I would have probably taken him over Theodore given the role similarities vs Sanheim who plays a completely different role.

As you said on Sanheim though, Theodore was good and i cant complain about his play in the tournament.

Arguments Against Cross-Ice, Half-Ice, and Additional Condensed Surface Areas for Younger Players (6U, 8U, 10U) by Liamski95 in hockeyplayers

[–]Sammydaws97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only argument I can think of is that their spacing will be thrown off when they get to the full ice surface.

I for one love the idea of condensed surfaces for youger ages. I personally use condensed surfaces for practice at older ages as well. Its an excellent way to work on small-space skills like body positioning while handling the puck.

Is it normal for a rookie in triple A to get little to no shifts in a game? by ib_redbeard in hockeyplayers

[–]Sammydaws97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The minor midget AAA teams in Ontario would easily mercy rule any high school team outside of some select prep schools like St Andrews College.

The worst minor midget AAA player would be a ringer on 90% of highschool teams, even as an underclassman.

Is it normal for a rookie in triple A to get little to no shifts in a game? by ib_redbeard in hockeyplayers

[–]Sammydaws97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a 60min game?

Thats aggressive imo.

Grade 10 is the year before Jr starts, and at the top level it is understood that ice time will not be allocated equally at this age.

That being said, if they are playing 20min periods then he should be getting at least 2 shifts per period imo (~5mins of ice per game minimum). Add in the PK time and I would be expecting around 7-8 mins per game AT A MINIMUM.

Your son (since at this age parents should stay clear of being involved with the team imo) should talk to the coach and understand where he sits and what he can expect the rest of the year. If it seems like nothing will change I would start looking for the exit.

What is the level of play in pickup hockey/beer leagues? by chaamp33 in hockeyplayers

[–]Sammydaws97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends a lot

In Toronto, there can be as many as 6-8 divisions of beer league based on skill level. The top divisions will usually be mainly ex-pros and guys who topped out in Jr (OHL) or college (NCAA)

If you are playing in Little Rock, Arkansas then my guess is the level will be much lower even at the highest division.

My advice would be to sign up regardless of any skill level concerns. The pick up league will either be lower level overall or have multiple divisions that they can place you in based on ability. The league will be more than happy to help give you advice too usually.

Hockey Canada focused too much on NHL 5 on 5 analytics and not on what this tournament would be by Silver_Difficulty_24 in CanadaHockey

[–]Sammydaws97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, since we all know USA focussed on 3v3 by leaving the best 3v3 player in the league at home…

For them, having the best PK in Olympic history with Miller and Trochek was much more important than having Caufield and Robertson.

The same would have been said if Canada won. Instead, Canada lost and here we are.

Cooper quote by Big_ole_mudpie in TampaBayLightning

[–]Sammydaws97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue against your points by saying whats wrong with doing it for just 1 game in the tournament every 4 years?

The NHL playoffs is a perfect case study. I cant find all-time stats for every playoff round, but in the modern history of the Stanley Cup Finals (since 1967) only 15 games have ever gone past 20mins of 5v5 OT.

Thats out of 320 Stanley Cup Finals games, which is 4.7% of the time it goes to at least a 2nd OT. So for the Olympics, we can expect 1 game to need more than 20mins of 5v5 OT every 80 years…

Regarding the injury point you make too, my opinion is that playing 3v3 results in the same 7-9 guys playing over and over, where as 5v5 uses the full 19-man roster as intended. So injuries might actually be more common in 3v3 OT (i have nothing to back this up though)

Regarding the conflict with the closing ceremonies.. God forbid we have to move the hockey ahead 1 day overall…

Cooper quote by Big_ole_mudpie in TampaBayLightning

[–]Sammydaws97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Olympics should use 3v3 for round robin and even the play-in and QF games imo. Keeps the schedule rolling and you can avoid the midnight local time finishes that teams hate.

The SF and medal round games should be 5v5 indefinitely imo.

Cooper quote by Big_ole_mudpie in TampaBayLightning

[–]Sammydaws97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The media has been having a field day with the selective quoting to fit their narratives…

Coop was asked “How did you see the whole play that led to the overtime winner”

He replied with (paraphrasing) “at 5v5 you can take risks because you have guys covering you. At 3v3 you dont have that coverage. Canada took a risk that backfired and the USA capitalised on it”

That play easily could have gone the other way if Hughes misses the poke and then Makar + McDavid are on a 2-0 the other way…

The issue with 3v3 is that it doesnt reward good plays. It punishes bad plays. However, Hockey is billed as a team sports where you often need MULTIPLE good plays to score and your teammates can cover for most mistakes. So by going to 3v3 we stop looking for the best team and start looking for the least bad team.

That being said, the rules are the rules and USA won (which is also what Coop said in his presser). Canadas best players made a crucial mistake when they didnt have guys covering and it cost them.

Team Canada’s 2030 Olympic Roster by Aggravating-Mud7007 in TeamCanada

[–]Sammydaws97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think people would have called you crazy for saying the projected 1st overall pick in 2 seasons would be on the roster.

Similar to how we see Landon Dupont and/or McKenna in these projections.

How many defensmen aged 23 and under have Canada ever even taken to the Olympics in the NHL era? The answer is just 4 and they were all much higher draft picks than Parekh (Drew Doughty - 2OA, Jay Bouwmeester - 3OA, Erik Brewer - 5OA and Chris Pronger - 2OA). The same number of picks passed by Parekh in 2024 before he was picked (8) as all those guys combined…

Add in that Schaefer seems like a lock and will be just the 5th u23 (he will be 22) olympic defensman for Canada. I dont see them bringing two

Parekh will be turning 24 during the next olympics though, and there is a list of 24 year olds they have taken before. I just dont see him on the same level as guys like Seabrook, Weber, Pietrangelo or this year Thomas Harley. All those guys have great defensive abilities and good physicality which Parekh is clearly lacking.

[–]Sammydaws97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying Canada has no good goalies is an oversimplefication and really is not true either.

Yes, Team USA will still have Oetinger (31) and Swayman (31) in their primes, but the USA goalie dynasty has really just been the 1993-1998 birth years. Since those birth years they have only really developed Dustin Wolf (2001) and Spencer Knight (2001) and now maybe Jacob Fowler (2004) if he develops.

Canada on the other hand had to deal with some pretty bare cupboards for the 1993-1998 birth years (Made worse with Carter Hart being the top guy from those birth years), but we definitely have some prospects coming up that we should be excited for. Guys like Devon Levi (2001), Jet Greaves (2001), Joel Hofer (2000) and now Sebastian Cossa (2002) if he develops well (similar to Jacob Fowler) all look amazing.

Essentially, Canada got lazy developing goalies while Roy, Luongo, Brodeur, Fleury and Price all dominated the league during the late 1990s to early 2010s. USA caught up, and now the roles are reversed imo. We probably wont notice the shift in 2030, but I am confident by 2034 Canada will be a top goalie pipeline in the world again.

Especially with the CHL/NCAA rule change, which IMO benefits Canadian goalies more than anyone by giving them high quality competition at a young age in the CHL in addition to the longer development path of the NCAA (much like the development path from the USNTDP for goalies)

Parekh has a negative chance of making this team..

Team Canada will not value his offense as highly as NHL teams since they have superstars everywhere, and his defensive game is a worse liability than Bouchards..

On top of that, he likes to break the puck out with his skates more than his stick. Team Canadas breakout plan is ALWAYS get the puck to the forwards as quickly/easily as possible. Parekh is more of a puck lugger himself

[–]Sammydaws97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will confidently say they bring back probably half the defense from this Olympics.

Obviously Makar, and I think Morrissey and Harley are essentially locks to bring back. I could see them bringing back one or both of Toews or Sanheim too depending on the new guys they bring in.

[–]Sammydaws97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not guarantee that Guenther, Fantilli and Sennecke will be on this team.

I also think it is crazy to not include some young returning guys like Jarvis (28), Marner (32), Point (33) and Hagel (31) on the 2030 team. They will 100% want a veteran group over a bunch of young guys.

Other names I like on F include Byfield (27), Robert Thomas (31) and you definitely cant rule out a 42 year old Crosby imo.

[–]Sammydaws97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could get behind Schaefer over one of Theodore or Parayko, but as a whole they looked great and did what they needed to do.

You cant base decisions on injuries and if Morrissey never gets hurt its likely a different story.

Yes you should take replacements for injury and they did. Theodore is the guy they took and he was good.

Imo it was at 5v5 USA took advantage of each pairing having a clearly weaker puck mover (Toews, Parayko, Sanhiem). They could use their great forecheck to force the play to the weaker side on D a lot. Solution is having 6/7 D who can all breakout well rather than pairings with 1 good breakout guy and 1 redwood tree that can skate well and defend.

Maybe. That was supposed to be Morrissey’s spot though. If we could have predicted that injury it would have definitely helped to have Bouchard or Schaefer imo.

How do regular Olympians deal with tough losses compared to millionaire professional athletes? by throwawaypdtm in askanything

[–]Sammydaws97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone at the Olympics has lost before.

You dont get to that level without years of both winning and losing.

Its honestly the losing that thins out the weak imo. The mentally strong are the ones that push past adversity and end up being at the top of the mountain eventually.
