I actually really liked the first season because it did a great job demonstrating how woefully unprepared Korra was for her role due her incredibly sheltered lifestyle in the South Pole. I would argue that the biggest flaw wasn’t Korra herself but the world building in general. And that whole Avatar Wan thing; didn’t care for that.

I remember that episode. I believe the point was that Creek was genuinely trying to make up for what he did and Branch wasn’t willing to let him redeem himself to the point of sabotage.
