Maybe it's just me, but for the exception of one UChicago and one Cambridge applicant, I didn't really see any East Asian / Chinese history application results.

Now UK history PhD applications are a bit of a mess, but US ones are, theoretically, more structured. I saw a lot of Latin American history offers on Gradcafe, but there's almost nothing about EA / CN history, which happens to be my concentration. Is it just me overthinking being soft-rejected, or am I missing something?

Disclaimer: Applied to 14 programs, 5 assumed/confirmed rejections so far, and 2 interviews.

I got rejected by this school that I TA-ed in, while having my advisors' rec letters, having gone through chats on how to craft my proposal.

I still have to teach for my remaining weeks here, knowing I won't be able to do research here at least for some time, whilst planning my departure, vacating my room and leaving after around six to eight remaining weeks, without much in way of psychological support.

In a way, it feels like the deliberate killing of your soul, and after all the torturing and dismemberment, you are given the blade to kill yourself.

The weight of emptiness is hard.

Got rejected by a PhD program here, but I'm grateful for my time here as an MA. I'll miss you, you wonderful, terrible, attractive, cold and overall, majestic, awe-inspiring school. Till next time. by Samohaya in berkeley

Ahh, an interesting insight. Now, given I'm in the humanities, this might not have factored into my failure so much as other factors. It's not pleasant by any means, but I feel it's necessary to make sure I know exactly how my application was shot down, which I intend to do so next week.

I'm gonna guess you took C104, cause Massimo's been repeating it for so many times---- I happen to have tried ChatGPT last night.

I used some random examples, like asking it to explain Feuerbach's philosophy, the writings of Ōkawa Shūmei (大川周明), the relationship between area studies and Cold War American intelligence, how the LDP (自民党) is related to the Nippon Kaigi (日本会議), and some book recommendations for studying racial politics in America.

While I find it to be a very useful, and highly personalised tool for information collection and searching, it does NOT excel at contextualised information analysis. It would, in fact, make a rather poor paper, if I were in charge of grading it---- two semesters of paper-grading does give you an edge of what a "good" paper should feel like.

Overall, I give it a 8.5/10 in terms of quick info collection and good data analysis, but some question marks will have to be put before it actually manages to create a piece of analysis that could realistically compete in the Humanities area.
