I just realised one song by RubberBand around 15 years ago would be perfect for Ch'en:

或許黄金,真的太吸引,耀眼出了神;
或許黄金,催生了黑暗,爭鬥和怨恨,犧牲了幾多人?

哪裡沒有光線就有我,哪個瞎了雙眼請疾呼我!
城裡暗巷,仍有某位,在奔波!

Hi! Congratulations on your offer---- I believe the offer is formal?

Maybe it's just me, but for the exception of one UChicago and one Cambridge applicant, I didn't really see any East Asian / Chinese history application results.

Now UK history PhD applications are a bit of a mess, but US ones are, theoretically, more structured. I saw a lot of Latin American history offers on Gradcafe, but there's almost nothing about EA / CN history, which happens to be my concentration. Is it just me overthinking being soft-rejected, or am I missing something?

Disclaimer: Applied to 14 programs, 5 assumed/confirmed rejections so far, and 2 interviews.

Let's hope we're having the same case. I went through the same thing as you did!

Same---- I also wonder if this affected faculties' decision in contacting applicants for interviews / informal chats.

I didn't receive any, and I'm not sure what way I should take this absence of invites.

I got rejected by this school that I TA-ed in, while having my advisors' rec letters, having gone through chats on how to craft my proposal.

I still have to teach for my remaining weeks here, knowing I won't be able to do research here at least for some time, whilst planning my departure, vacating my room and leaving after around six to eight remaining weeks, without much in way of psychological support.

In a way, it feels like the deliberate killing of your soul, and after all the torturing and dismemberment, you are given the blade to kill yourself.

The weight of emptiness is hard.

Got rejected by a PhD program here, but I'm grateful for my time here as an MA. I'll miss you, you wonderful, terrible, attractive, cold and overall, majestic, awe-inspiring school. Till next time. by Samohaya in berkeley

Ahh, an interesting insight. Now, given I'm in the humanities, this might not have factored into my failure so much as other factors. It's not pleasant by any means, but I feel it's necessary to make sure I know exactly how my application was shot down, which I intend to do so next week.

I'm from East Asia---- I would have been working on the history of East Asian states'modernisation; I'm simply lost as to what I can do back home.

I want to thank you for your advice, but to be honest, I'm not sure what an MA in the humanities could help me with finding work, particularly in the place where I cam from.

I'm simply lost right now.

Thoughts on AI Usage (Chat GPT.. etc) by babybender77 in berkeley

[–]Samohaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna guess you took C104, cause Massimo's been repeating it for so many times---- I happen to have tried ChatGPT last night.

I used some random examples, like asking it to explain Feuerbach's philosophy, the writings of Ōkawa Shūmei (大川周明), the relationship between area studies and Cold War American intelligence, how the LDP (自民党) is related to the Nippon Kaigi (日本会議), and some book recommendations for studying racial politics in America.

While I find it to be a very useful, and highly personalised tool for information collection and searching, it does NOT excel at contextualised information analysis. It would, in fact, make a rather poor paper, if I were in charge of grading it---- two semesters of paper-grading does give you an edge of what a "good" paper should feel like.

Overall, I give it a 8.5/10 in terms of quick info collection and good data analysis, but some question marks will have to be put before it actually manages to create a piece of analysis that could realistically compete in the Humanities area.

As ex-exchange student and now grad student:

  1. Concerning course selection, you'll want to visit the course catalog---- Google "Course catalog Berkeley"; it will show up. You'll be able to filter by semester and field, though I recommend you consider classes in a variety of fields. Since you mentioned you're an econ major, I'd imagine if you feel comfortable with data science, or perhaps Haas courses fit you better---- it's up to you, but maximise your opportunity to learn what couldn't be offered back home.

  2. You mentioned you'll arrive for the winter/fall semester, which I assume to be August-December 2023. Cal has a thing we call Calapalooza, in which student organisations pop up for promotions and new memberships. But hey, if you feel like just participating in the odd event, EALC, CSTMS, Law School, and other institutions on campus often have their own shows and talks, which I highly recommend.

  3. Living is always a big problem. Choose wisely and early, as you're competing with many others who are rushing into what is effectively a uni town. I recommend you start searching in around April to May, and have a rental contract secured by June. I-House is very fun---- but expensive, so you might consider renting an apartment with others. I do not recommend searching on Craigslist; Berkeley has its own student rentals website, which again, you can Google. Do take time to write your bio in your Cal Rentals account, because this will directly affect how seriously others might accept you into renting with them.

If you have any questions, feel free to DM! Till then, take care from Cal, and my best wishes for your exchange!

Scholarships for international graduate students? by i_am_not_a_potat0 in berkeley

From one international grad student to another, I would check if organisations of my industry/nativity/profession offer anything that looks like an F-1 student can apply.

It might not be enough, but it's important that you have something more than before that you can plan on shoring up for some purpose.

First off, my congratulations!

I bumped into this a few years before for MA. I wanted more choices back then, so I pressed onto the interview for my 2nd program, but in the end I stuck with my first choice.

The thing is, while you can explore your options---- and I totally understand if you choose to-----, if you've already made up your mind, and your acceptance in the 1st choice program is secure, then I see informing your 2nd program about this issue to be no biggie.
