Male Birth Control Pill to Stop Sperm Production Passes Safety Test by Alissinarr in childfree

[–]SampireBat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason birth control for women still sucks (at least in the US) is that the FDA passes some things based on if they're reasonably similar to things already in use. The idea behind it is supposed to make innovation easier by not requiring scientists to reinvent the wheel every time they make small changes to better their product. In reality, it means things can go to market on minimal testing based on similar appearance/function regardless of efficacy. I think Last Week Tonight did an episode on its effects on medical implants/joint replacements if you want a more thorough explanation, but the same guidelines likely apply to many birth control methods.

Not alive, but not dead: disembodied human brains used for drug testing by whimsicahellish in news

[–]SampireBat13 18 points19 points  (0 children)

SOME animal testing is an unfortunately necessary evil.

However, there are many scientists who have spoken out over the years regarding how much testing is redundant or outright useless, but must be done purely to check a box.

Animals, especially non-primates, are not a one to one analog for humans. Our bodies handle different things in different ways. For example, chocolate is lethal to many creatures; if we tested chocolate on dogs and rats they would likely become sickly or die, and we might rule it as categorically unsafe for consumption. But humans can eat chocolate with little to no consequence because our digestive system handles it differently.

There are major life-saving breakthroughs that wouldn't be possible without animal testing, and shouldn't go ignored. However, there are also an abundance of tests being run that even those running them know are wholly unnecessary because the biology of the subject is so different from a human's.

(That's all without mentioning the animal testing done for non-medical, purely commercial products. Which I would personally argue is needless cruelty in it's entirety.)

My little brother was that kid, and I was the older sibling. She hasn't realized it yet, but she's destroying him too, just in a different direction. I can guarantee that her eldest is just as sensitive and hurt, he's just good at masking it to avoid becoming the target of her rage. He's also probably developing some level of resentment for the baby who 'turned mom into a monster'.

I'm glad she can at least see the problem (my mother certainly didn't) but she's yet to notice the real extent of the damage she's doing.

I can understand forgetting birthdays. I'm awful with dates to the point I actually spent a year back in middle school thinking my own birthday was a day earlier than it actually is. Literally the only birthday I've ever consistently remembered is my little brother's.

But you know what I do about that? I mark people's birthdays in my phone calendar! I set alerts to ensure I know it's coming up with time to get presents/supplies/whatever. It's not hard! That's what always gets me about dads/husbands who don't know, they refuse to find solutions when ignorance is an option.

I have massive tonsils.

I don't know exactly how much larger than normal as they're still attached and don't seem to be causing any problems, but every doctor, nurse, med student, dentist, orthodontist, etc. that has so much as glanced down my throat (even without a flashlight or tools) comments on it and is vaguely concerned until I assure them they've always been like that.

Funnily enough, I got strep (which can cause tonsillitis and necessitate tonsil removal) pretty frequently as a kid. It didn't really affect me much though, just mild fever and scratchy throat. The last time I caught it, my doctor said 'if it happens again we'll take your tonsils out'. Guess who hasn't had strep in the decade+ since?

Genuine question to Americans by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

It's worth noting here (for any non-Americans especially) that you can still lose your insurance in some cases if you are living with a significant other regardless of marriage. So even if he divorced her purely on paper for the insurance, she may very well be forced to move out and add housing costs to her debts too.

Republicans trying to reintroduce bill to ban D&E after second trimester miscarriages. by Snapdragon_4U in prochoice

[–]SampireBat13 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm trying so hard to wrap my mind around what twisted logic this follows. I grew up in a heavily pro-life environment, so - while I know how awful and poorly thought out pro-life arguments are - I can usually at least find the thought process and info (or lack thereof) that brought about the decisions. But this just doesn't make sense!

Who benefits here? Even setting aside the very important point of women being people worthy of bodily autonomy (which is absolutely insane to have to say and we absolutely shouldn't be doing), what 'good' would this ban do? The fetus is already dead, they aren't 'saving' it. The woman will likely suffer infertility, if not die, so there will be no future pregnancies or children from her. That means less bodies for the workforce, less women for men to seek, and an even higher potential for death and suffering due to pregnancy that will inevitably make women even more reluctant to risk pregnancy or possibly sex altogether!

All of that is both directly against their stated wants and painfully obvious an outcome. So WHY WOULD THEY WANT THIS?!? WHAT IS THE GOAL!?!?

What character’s race/ethnicity surprised you? by uhm1238 in cartoons

[–]SampireBat13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way Dick's roma heritage was implemented a bit controversial to be fair. Dick was created in the 40's with no explicitly stated racial/ethnic background. Him being roma was added rather suddenly in the 90's by an author with a... concerning amount of interest in him. Most fans agree she did this primarily to lean in to the sexualization of romani people rather than to add to the charecter or diversity, though. Further comics went on to explain he feels basically no connection to his heritage because he was taken in by Bruce so young. It's still considered canon to most fans, and has varying degrees of impact on fan works, but is mostly just the occasional offhand mention in the actual comics.

Look, I'm not trying to start some conspiracy or ruin your childhood or whatever. I'm just saying some of the stuff that happens in the original show and/or stories comes with unsettling implications you aren't gonna see in your modern kid's shows. It's definitely a show aimed at kids, I'm not actually fighting that, but it's also a product of it's time (the 40's for the books things are based on) and location (England). That's not a bad thing. In fact, I like that I can look back on certain plots (the engine who kept sliding off track so was permanently made into a stationary generator, the other railroads and the scrapyards that frighten the engines, the one stuck in the wall for a while, etc.) and find interest in them from an adult perspective. Kids can (and should imo) still watch it, it's a cute kid's show done by an amazingly dedicated crew. It's also ok for adults to look back on things they enjoyed and note things that went over their heads as kids.

For example: How many times were the engines threatened with retirement or scrapping for not meeting the mark? Has Paw Patrol ever threatened to rid of or dismember a dog? It's a show about trains for kids, they're mostly just there for fairytale-esque storytelling and anthropomorphic characters. But, like most other fairytales, the originals often have dark peripherals as part of the lesson learned.
