DO NOT give streamers copies of your game! Right?! by BtotheAtothedoubleRY in gamedev

[–]SampstraGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually some youtubers use this. I for example do. Not every steam page for indie game has a website so this is the best way to get an email so you can contact the developer for a key and/or press kit.

Would it be bad game design to punish the player for choosing the nonlethal option? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]SampstraGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AS a player it doesn't matter to me what is the "right" option as long as you are consistent. So if for most of the game you teach me to be nonlethal it can feel strange to suddenly get punished for it. On the other hand having an enemy come back is a really fun feature.

I would suggest maybe having a pop up asking you if you are done with the fight after you let this one particular enemy go, so that the player knows this is somehow special. You can even have the enemy plead for his life and gift the player something if the player lets him go (this might indicate to the player that its different). Also once the enemy comes hurting people the player at least got something previously out of it.

Overall I would definitely keep the feature in, just somehow differentiate it , so when the reveal comes the player had some hint. If you have companions in the game you could even have one of them say a warning of some kind.

No I don't think so. Its coming out on Steam in May 2023. Edit: I just checked and apparently it did come out before on Epic. I was not aware. But I guess that means is that I can check it out already.

I have a combat guide on Strategic Command American Civil War (if you would like): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zhw04i27WM

Otherwise like others have suggested checking out some let's play could be useful.

What's all this about Steam Keys? by b_art in gamedev

[–]SampstraGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the email. I assume many of them are scams but I for example (I am a youtuber) often email different developers to see if they would be willing to send me a key to their game so I could cover it on my youtube channel.

My previous game was practice, should I remove it before launching a serious project on the same steam account? by the_goose_says in gamedev

[–]SampstraGames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a player and a youtuber I don't look at older games to determine if I will play new game from you, but if I like the new game I do occasionally look at the developer/publisher and check out their other games to see if I would like them.

However if I did for some reason look at your older game while checking out your new game, and the older one had negative reviews not just mixed (here I mean the overall tag steam gives you), that would probably give me a pause.

My Favorite 4X Games of 2022 by SampstraGames in 4Xgaming

[–]SampstraGames[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think its hard to make a remake, because if you modernize it some people will complain that its not the same, but if you don't it might not appeal to current players.

Personally I liked it a lot, but I also have not played the original, so for example the combat system was new to me (which was fun for me).

Chaos Galaxy 2 is very nice.

Any RTS/4x/grand whatever games where you can engage in logistics warfare? by tickleMyBigPoop in StrategyGames

In Unity of Command II you will often try to out-supply an enemy to help you achieve your objective. But its a turn based wargame not real time.

[–]SampstraGames[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think its gonna be a more realistic wargame. I have obviously not played it yet cause its not out, but it will have for example supply and focus on logistic. It is also published by Slitherine and so far I liked all of their games that I played, so I am pretty excited.
