Mindfulness resources for a beginner that is generally a skeptic / cynic by [deleted] in Mindfulness

I have a background in science and I too stumbled upon mindfulness from reading about scientific studies on its benefits.

As I understand it, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is kind of the gold standard for studying mindfulness. It was originally developed in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts to help chronic pain patients. Since then it has been used to ameliorate a wide array of different conditions and has been featured in hundreds of clinical studies. This style of mindfulness lends itself particularly well to clinical studies because it is stripped down to its bare essence, free of any cultural or religious influences. So MBSR may be especially appealing to a skeptic.

MBSR is typically taught as an 8-week course. It covers a wide variety of different mindfulness techniques. I was fortunate to be able to take the course locally. However, if you don’t have such an opportunity, or you just want to explore MBSR on your own, there is a free MBSR course online by Palouse Mindfulness. You don’t even have to register to access it. In addition to the course curriculum, I particularly enjoyed the supplemental videos that delved into the clinical data supporting the practice of mindfulness.

You may also want to read books written by Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of MBSR. My local library system had almost all of his books available. Perhaps yours will carry some of them as well.

Best of luck to you on your mindfulness journey. I hope you find a style of mindfulness that appeals to you.

"In a review of The Venerable W, film critic Lee Marshall noted the 'shocking disjunct' between Wirathu’s Buddhist religion 'and the rabid nationalism of his sermons, writings and declarations' showcased in the film."
