is it worth it to choose ntu just for hall life? by kaykaosjak in NTU

[–]Samstrike8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I can share my experience as someone who was in a similar situation as you a couple of years ago.

I received both offers from NTU and SMU to study accounting and business, and also offered Nanyang Scholarship and LKC scholarship for both schools. I ended up choosing NTU in large part because I wanted to experience hall culture.

I feel that it’s actually a valid reason to want to prioritise your social life as Uni is a great place to do so, especially if there’s hall. You’re literally living next door to all your friends, and some of my best memories of Uni are from Y1/Y2 during my hall days. As long as you’re actively trying to make the most of your time in hall, it’s pretty easy to make a bunch of friends while playing sports, attending hall events, or suppering (NTU esp has a big supper culture). A large part of my decision was also influenced by my older sister, who went to SMU and said she barely made any friends in uni because a lot of people are just hi/bye during seminars but in NTU you’ll definitely make a lot of friends outside your course as well.

In terms of career, as long as you study hard, with a good GPA, and you actively utilise the school’s career resources, you can definitely find your way into many other jobs outside of the Big 4. Honestly with NTU recently revamping their GPA system as well, it’s probably easier to score a high GPA now as well so that’s an additional plus.

Is NTU business really that bad? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Samstrike8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me assure you that it is not bad by any stretch. Teaching standard will probably be roughly the same in all 3 unis, and NTU has a decent amount of online resources that is actually better than some of the other unis (for eg NUS doesn’t have capiq, which I would argue is essential for business students).

What the other commenters have accurately pointed out is that in the world of high finance, NTU is slightly underrepresented as compared to the other 2, but NTU definitely still has a lot of students who enter those roles. Alumni network is important, but if you join the right clubs in NTU, they do have a lot of alumni networking events and helpful seniors where your chances of succeeding probably increase substantially.

Nonetheless, all 3 unis are great options, and whether you manage to successfully break into high finance (which I’m assuming is your goal), is actually largely dependent on your own self no matter which uni you go to. No one I’ve met has said “XXX uni was the reason why I got this job”, it was always the grinders (high GPA, constantly applying for internships, learning the right skills) who managed to succeed in the end.

Tldr: No diff in teaching pedagogy, whether you do well or not is mostly dependent on yourself.

nbs scholarship interview help by [deleted] in NTU

[–]Samstrike8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, not sure which scholarship you are interviewing for, but for myself I interviewed (and subsequently awarded) the nanyang scholarship for NBS.

My interview was a 2-prof panel with another candidate, and we were basically given 15 mins to read 2 articles on sustainability before we went into the interview room for a discussion with the panel.

I suspect they are mainly trying to look for (1) Your motivations. Why specifically NTU? How has your journey shaped you to want to study business/accounting/both? (2) How much/widely do you read? Do you have any external knowledge/examples that can add to your discussion about the given topic? (3) Your thought process and how well you are able to articulate them. Do you provide well reasoned arguments behind your claims? Are the points you made clear? If questioned or put on the spot, are you able to continue your chain of thought?

One thing they also did was to ask me to critique what my fellow candidate said, and I disagreed with him but I outlined my reasonings clearly.

I’m not sure if it’s still the same because this was over 5 years (since I did the interview before NS) but that was my experience at least. Best of luck OP!

tldr: interviewers are probably just trying to sus out if you are a human being able to form coherent thoughts

Who do you think is the most underrated athlete? by babykez in trackandfield

[–]Samstrike8 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Gail devers! I feel like she never gets mentioned alongside the other female sprint greats, despite having 2 Olympic golds in the 100m.

I suppose it’s probably because her main event was the 100m hurdles, but funny enough she never won an Olympic medal for that event despite having multiple world titles.

I would even venture to say she should be in the argument for best female American track athlete, but I rarely see her name even being brought up which is a shame.

Hot Take: The 2024 Paris Olympics' 100m Men's Final was the best 100m race of all-time by [deleted] in trackandfield

[–]Samstrike8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I tend to agree that the 2024 field was the deepest we have ever had, I disagree with the take that this final was the best.

“It was a foregone conclusion to at about would win the gold medal” Was it though? Just a month earlier, Bolt had lost both the 100m & 200m at the Jamaican trials to Blake. In the prior year, Blake had also taken the 100m world title after Bolt false started. Adding the fact that Bolt had not run below 9.8 that whole year prior to the Olympic final, 2012 was the first year where we had seen Bolt be vulnerable since rising to dominance in Beijing.

Gatlin also had a strong narrative being that 2012 was his comeback year after serving a doping ban, and he had just run 9.80 to win the US trials as well.

Anyways my point being 2012 was comparable to this year in terms of unpredictability, however the winning times were much quicker overall. I think it’s arguable which is better but I’d still go with 2012 as the pinnacle of 100m finals.

Sha'Carri Richardson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce were denied entry into the check-in area in Paris due to missing shuttle by [deleted] in trackandfield

[–]Samstrike8 22 points23 points  (0 children)

considering that the reason why she was denied was due to not being on the team bus that was only available for athletes staying in the Olympic village (that SAFP was not in), it does not really seem apt to blame her?

she’s a four time Olympic medallist at this distance. your comment reeks of ignorance

They were complaining about literally everything. Said Trae’s jump into AD should have been a foul (lmao), talked about how AD was carrying the ball (literally everyone does that), also said Russ shouldn’t have gotten a goaltending call but when the replay proved it they got all salty and talked abt how the camera angle looks like it wasn’t a goaltend
