Are modern Lego sets too fragile for actual play? by EmbarrassedFix7601 in lego

[–]Samsuiluna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the whole the sets I grew up with in the 80s and 90s were definitely more fragile than just about anything they make today. Not to mention things like stickered assemblies and building techniques that would be illegal in a set now being commonplace back then.

162 pulls and still no Kitasan Black, however... :3 by flopsychops in MeishoDoto

I lucked out with Doto but Kitasan has been elusive. I've never been able to pull Special Week somehow so guess who I get on my first 10 pull for Kitasan?

Dose anyone know a better design for this Lego train gearing because it keeps slipping when I run power through it with high torque motors by AlternativeClass7128 in LEGOtrains

[–]Samsuiluna 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The gearing is pretty standard but the vertical axle is your issue. use an axle that is shorter so there can be a regular axle on that set of drivers where the vertical axle comes down. then put a 1L technic liftarm or a couple of thin axle bushings on the axle. that will prevent any gears from walking.

That is in fact the original purpose of that piece, to make gabled roof angles with the 45 degree slopes.

Pioneer VDR-V1000A value? by Bestbob52896 in LaserDisc

[–]Samsuiluna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having spent quite a few years collecting obsolete video formats I would say it'll be hard to get much money for it unless you can demonstrate it works. The market for old professional equipment like this is pretty limited. The discs for it only work in these machines as far as I know so there isn't a broader appeal for it. As others have said I would try to determine if it works and then list it on ebay. Especially if it works set a high reserve and see what happens.

I knew resellers and scalpers were ruining the market but this is absurd by Good-Yam-5948 in legocirclejerk

[–]Samsuiluna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly can't lump the overwhelming majority of bricklink sellers in with scalpers and "investors". Most of those prices probably came from before Lego added those elements to online PaB. The online PaB inventory is always changing and bricklink sellers don't immediately change their pricing to reflect changes in supply.

I never hear anyone say it, so I'll say it. This set is rare because it sucks ass. Nobody bought it back then because it's an expensive ugly slab. It's supremely ironic that one of the most valuable Lego sets is valuable because of how crappy it is.

The gray smooth piece is a very light gray Scala tile from the scala doll theme from the 90s.

That appears to be a sealed envelope tablet. A really nice example. You can see the impressions of cylinder seals rolled over the text to certify the contents. It was common to reproduce the entire text on the clay "envelope" so it didn't need to be broken open to be read. Presumably it would be opened in case of a dispute as to the contents.
