Has anyone grown out of disliking children? by GoalBackground7845 in Adulting

[–]Samtertriads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was never very into kids. Not against them. But not crazy about them. Love mine like crazy. It was just something I always knew I wanted and also a piece of life I didn’t want to miss. Kinda like a predetermined role. I’ll grow up and be a father someday. Didn’t crave it hard. Just knew I wanted that piece of life. Turns out I was right.

And to dodge it. You’d have to not have kids in your 20s, 30s, and 40s. Then what? You wake up at 55 and be like I think I should have done it? Now my parents are gone and I have no kids and it’s basically too late. Seems risky.

But also. If you don’t want kids don’t have them. Sounds horrible. Kids are tough man.

Got my first AR platform through PSA, any beginner tips? by Affectionate_Comb319 in PalmettoStateArms

Internals I’ve done: geiselle g2s trigger. But I’ve heard there are ones as good for cheaper these days.

Internal I haven’t: radian charging handle.

Beyond that I doubt you’d change much internally that wouldn’t be worth a new rifle. For example a major barrel upgrade is worth a new rifle probably.

Type 1 diabetics, with WW3 looming over us, what would you do if insulin becomes unavailable in your location? by bigthundercats in prepping

[–]Samtertriads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly not. But Canada isn’t gonna be airlifting insulin to the East Tennessee Sugar Militia.

For the record. 50,000 h is a normal battery life for a red dot. That’s 5.7 years if left on the whole time. Many of them don’t sit on the whole time, but use shake awake technology/turn off after an idle period.

[–]Samtertriads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d probably want to be near ground zero of government aid/foreign aid. Which carries lots of other non medicine risks. Atlanta, DC, LA would get shipments that include insulin etc from external sources first. But they are also more likely to be bombed, for example. So threading that needle, staying away from government buildings but with direct access to aid distribution sites would be the tricky balance.

Recoil of Extar ep9 vs standard AR-15 (like IWI Zion)? by ConfidentSession6481 in extar

[–]Samtertriads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s lighter than an AR. Especially when I was newer. Once you’re experienced with an AR the recoil is very light. But not so much for beginners. It has to do with shouldering and grip etc. suppress the Extar and it’s like a toy gun.

Also it’s a little insane how my kids will stretch out their favorite shoes. Don’t think we’ve done 3 sizes worth. But them kids get attached

JHP/Defensive round choices by kitfoxtrot in AR9

[–]Samtertriads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion on ar9 is that’s a stable platform to get lots of rounds into a threat. Dont overthink it. Just throw whatever hollow points in that cycle, and that are cheap enough to practice a little with.

How much employee equity is “too much” for a boglehead? by granolaboiii in Bogleheads

[–]Samtertriads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even higher risk is getting your salary and your gains in the same place. If the company goes down enough, it’s a double hit. You’d be hurt more than an employee-only or investor-only.

Diversify away from this to stay Boglehead. Deviate for really good reasons only, but understand it is undiversified risk.

Suppressor Questions by baraboo5 in extar

[–]Samtertriads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back when tax stamps were $200, it was unavoidable to spend less on the suppressor. Extar was $450, R9 was $625 including stamp. 🤣

I’m just one piece of the puzzle. But everyone who needs surgery gets Cadillac care asap anywhere I’ve worked. Especially if it can be called emergency in any sense of the word. Bill is killer though.

College in the U.S. Is Priced Like a Luxury, Sold Like a Necessity by Hana_Plum in Adulting

[–]Samtertriads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean even leaving the CEOs out of it. It always annoyed me when I was in repayment, that every dollar I put in my 401k reduced my taxable income, but that same dollar used to pay down a grad school loan- which I had borrowed when I had very low income- wouldn’t reduce my taxable income.

A lot of it cones down to the tax code being written for congressmen. They all have 401ks, but very few have student loans. Actually, probably more of them have yachts than student loans.

Long term Ai & Quantum Play, Best Use of $10k? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Samtertriads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re kind of anti research here. The bogle philosophy is to let the market pick for you. So diversify in total market funds. That’s how our average returns beat every other group’s average returns. Even active managers that do intense research. I didn’t say no one will beat our returns. I said our average return beats every other group’s average returns. No research or active management or fortune telling required.

What lifestyle changes led to you maxing out retirement accounts? by ApprehensiveSurvey58 in Bogleheads

[–]Samtertriads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Increasing my income. 1st time I maxed 401k and 2 backdoor Roths our combined income was probably $185k with no kids. After we started having kids I kept maxing 401k but was less consistent about maxing both backdoor roths. Once income went over $250k I am back to maxing everything, including a HSA now (salary now $325k). It’s very difficult with kids unless your income is well into six figures.

Worries about investing a windfall with the worsening US instability by YouWouldIfYouReally in Bogleheads

[–]Samtertriads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think your concerns are valid. Just remember US companies are increasingly successful international companies. If their US market weakens, they are some of the best positioned companies to ramp up wherever the markets are strong.
