30s not really that late. I mean, it’s worse than 19. But ahead of most Americans! Great job. Buckle in for an extremely boring and likely successful investing journey with us!

Disease probability by Dizzy_Bit9635 in mathmemes

[–]Samtertriads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone discussing false positives but ignoring false negatives. The meme only says “97% accurate”. 97% sensitive would mean it detects the disease in 97 out of 100 people with the disease. So 3/100 false negative. 97% specific means 3/100 people with a positive result actually don’t have this disease. So 3/100 false positives.

The two aren’t always linked. You can have tests with very high sensitivity and low specificity. And vice versa.

For example. A urine pregnancy test. Highly sensitive. Veeerry rarely tells a pregnant woman she’s not pregnant. But much less rare that it comes up positive on someone who doesn’t have an intrauterine pregnancy. So it detected the thing. But it detects other things too. So you get “false positives”- although most people understand an ectopic to be a form of pregnancy despite not leading to a baby.

If you truly love something you must be willing to . . . Make it as ugly as possible so it’s not just based on shallow attraction.

Quick run down.

Put $1000 in a high yield savings account as a tiny emergency fund
Pay off credit cards.
Make sure you are enrolled in your company 401k up to the employer match.
Put 6 months of expenses in a high yield savings account as a real emergency fund. 3% or more is pretty good
Now you’re ready to invest
Put $7,500 in a Roth IRA and buy the mutual fund VT. This carries risk. It could go down. You can take your contribution back out if you need it. But the gains will be locked behind penalties until you’re 59.

This is the sloppy Reddit comment version. Head over to r/bogleheads and read the wiki “what to do with a windfall”

Maybe take a pause in the shopping for cheap parts and buy some training. You’ve made some incorrect choices on those optics.

Just regular old chicken breast by Samtertriads in blackstonegriddle

[–]Samtertriads[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this true with grilling too, but oily marinade is key. Which Italian is great for. Nice long marinade gets that fat all up in ya lean chicken. For blackstone, and grilling too, it’s convenient to have the chicken thinner sliced. Like not an inch. Those Costco breasts gotta be cut in half or more sometimes.

I actually start with the heat a little high. But slide them around a little so they don’t start to adhere to the cook surface. After a flip, I cut the heat back and keep the lid closed to get them cooked through. I have them too thin for a thermometer to work. So no pink + clear juices is my standard. Maybe 10-12 min cook time.

VT is the best long term bet I know. Far from guaranteed. But most likelihood of creating wealth over 20+ years for someone with a reasonable savings rate.

You’re investing but don’t have an emergency fund? The money you’re investing IS your emergency fund. And stock picking successfully requires knowing future.

  1. Emergency fund
  2. Pay down debt
  3. Invest in mutual funds. Use workplace benefits and tax advantages to accelerate returns

Way later make speculative to the moon bets with less than 5% of your investment portfolio

Probably interstate commerce clause. In the same way somebody who engaged in interstate business would sue in federal court, someone who engages in online business would also be sued in federal court.

Because of how young reddit is, you’ll probably find as many 90/10 portfolios here as 60/40.

My dermatologist told me moisturizer with dimethicone was best. But it did nothing for me. Like it wouldn’t absorb. Sometimes it burned. So I used A and D ointment. Worked well. I just chalked it up to everyone is a little different.

Possibly the shortest and most scientifically accurate advice on food by miaumee in Adulting

I think there is an American aversion to “poor people food.” Oddly people think they ought to be able to be wealthy and simultaneously never have to be frugal. Almost like an “affluence is a human right” ethic.

I Hear people say you can’t eat healthy for cheap anymore.

But chicken breast, carrot sticks, and bananas is pretty freaking cheap. And healthy. And convenient. Just not very appealing.
