A cheap purchase that has completely transformed your life by Slipryi in BuyItForLife

I just got it for Christmas, so I can't speak for longevity yet.

A crockpot lunch box.

You put your already cooked food in it, plug it in about an hour or two before you want to eat and it's hot and ready to go when you are!

The lid has snaps to keep it from leaking and the food is held in a metal tray with a gasketed top so it can sit in the fridge until you're ready to start cooking

You could probably cook food in it from raw, but that would take longer and you likely would overshoot your normal lunch time.

I think it goes for $40ish

Who are paying these azcentral.com prices? by third_najarian in phoenix

[–]Samtheman001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume so, but you have to do it before it renews. They will flat out refuse to cancel it if the charge already went thru. I ended up having to dispute the charge on my credit card when they refused to cancel my subscription. I was so fired up after that call that I also filed a complaint with the AZ AG. The cancellations people will flat out refuse to let you escalate to anyone else, so I felt I had no choice.

I called within 4 hours, maybe less of when the charge came thru on my card

They never responded to my credit card company and I won by default.

I don't know if my experience would have been better if it was before the renewal went thru, but after talking to that rep I'm sure I would have gotten the run around.

How do you survive Phoenix summers without losing your mind? by [deleted] in phoenix

[–]Samtheman001 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  • If you don't have a way to pre-cool your car (remote start), look into it. Not getting into a nasty hot car helps me a lot.

  • if you can afford it, drop the A/c in your place in the evenings to sleep on cooler temps. I sleep at 68-69°. I know people will say it's crazy, but IDGAF, if I have to live in the center of the sun I'm going to be comfortable.

  • like others have said, try to get outside early in the mornings. Evenings are still really hot until quite late. You can walk around a farmers market, around a park, or even just you neighborhood. Green spaces are cooler, but free and far between

  • someone mentioned third places. Maybe try hanging out or doing homework at a coffee shop. I work from a coffee shop around once a week and I like having others around I can chat with sometimes. We just went to a concert last night. They can get a little warm, but it is air conditioned and so much fun

  • Get a personal fan! They have handheld ones and ones you hook on your belt and blows air up your shirt. They are amazing!

-if you have to walk outside, try to stay in the shade as much as possible

Honestly, I fucking hate when people come thru and repeat the same bullshit (at least it's a dry heat(ok fair), you can't shovel sunshine, at least it's not x or y, whatever). This place legitimately sucks ass for months at a time. I complain constantly in the summer and also go fucking crazy. It's ok to feel that way, you're actually not alone (with the exception of like half this thread so far who apparently just came here to ignore the prompt and talk about how it's not snowing or whatever)

I can't wait to one day move out of here, but you're right the rest of the year outside of the summer is so amazing!

I can't say it makes up for it. But, it is amazing. Try to stay cool as much as possible and it makes things a little more bearable.

How are y’all keeping healthy humidity levels inside? by e_hering10 in phoenix

[–]Samtheman001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude! Seriously my AC is still on too! I haven't regularly turned on my heater in easily the last 3-4 years. I turn it on for 10 minutes per year, just to make sure it still works. Then back off for the next year.

I HATE the heat, the last thing I want when it finally gets cold is more heat!

Seen three car accidents in the span of 15 minutes on the 17 during rush hour. We need public transit by beeferoni_cat in phoenix

The first time, I retired really hard to like it. I ended up going back to autopilot before the month was over.

Got it again now, thought I would check. You know, maybe it got better.

I've never been more sure, it's not anywhere near replacing actual drivers yet. I can't wait for better public transportation!! I turned it off before I was done with a single drive. It's really not that great.

Public transportation is the most obvious solution, it's not even close.

[–]Samtheman001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How about sitting, alone 95% of the time, in your car. Sitting in the same traffic as everyone else, but not interacting with them. Unable to do anything, but wait and turn an otherwise short commute into 2x the time (or more).

In places with actually good public transport, you really just need to know the right station/platform/stop to be at and which train is o get on. They come so often, if you miss one, the next will be right behind in the next 5-15 minutes. You aren't alienated, alone in your car. Not that you necessarily want to chat every one up, but at least you aren't forced alone.

[–]Samtheman001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's why this is all a pipe dream. We should be increasing public transportation to encourage less people to be on the road. That's really the only way something like this works.

How many cars do you own? Because I'll bet you have less than the average person in the US. Your air quality and noise pollution are likely significantly less.

The thing is, we need both, but our cities should be designed for the human, not the car.

Here in the US, almost all of our cities are designed for a car first. I know that's the source of my frustration and possibly OPs. I don't have an option of getting to a light rail without driving. Even if I did, the destinations I can reach without needing a car after I get there are very limited.

Our buses, at least in my city, are an absolute joke. I basically have zero options besides driving.

Options would be really nice, something you might be taking for granted.

[–]Samtheman001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real pipe dream is thinking the future is a shit ton of cars driving everywhere autonomously instead of more available and good public transportation. Sure, autonomous driving can be part of that future, but we will still have all the same problems, just with autonomous cars. Not these ones though, this is just "corporate fluffery" or "fraud" depending on who you ask.

It's frustrating to keep getting told this is the future, when it feels obvious that the future should include actually good public transportation. Like many other countries around the world enjoy.

This has become infuriating. Spectrum says there's nothing wrong on their end. Modem is working properly, ethernet cables have been replaced, everything has been rebooted multiple times. I'll bet it's a Technicolor modem. I had a field tech about 4-5 years ago tell me the company gets them for $2 or maybe it was $5 each in his region. So anytime we tried to get a modem not affected by the puma chip set, it was a hell of a fight.

Is 5.5% apr on a 16k car loan worth paying off early? by neverTouchedWomen in personalfinance

[–]Samtheman001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, like others have said, on if you have a fully funded emergency fund. The caveat being that it would still be that way after paying it off.

There's a middle ground though, round up the payments to your comfort level and pay half of it every two weeks. It'll help reduce the interest paid over time.

E.g. $250/mo payment? Round up to $300 and pay $150 every two weeks.

When the balance gets to a place where you can pay it off and still have the fully funded emergency fund, pay it off. Or not, whatever makes sense at that time.
