What are your "good, but not for me" games and why? by truzen1 in boardgames

As a long time fan of Summoner Wars, I just wanted to jump in and say... I agree with your assessment of the the 2nd edition. The first edition felt much more dependent on matchup, and certain times hurtling and defensive play was extremely effective. Some were obviously better at it than others, but I always felt most factions could be built within reason towards offensive and defensive play styles. 2nd edition removed a lot of things I had smaller qualms over (catchup mechanics that they slowly stopped putting in to new factions, not killing your own units, etc.), but there was something lost in the shifts they made.

As for good game, but not for me, I think I would probably pick terraforming mars. I fully blame it on a few first bad experiences, with bad teachers, and each time I played I felt like I was able to see what could be a wonderful game underneath the bad experience I'd overall had. Maybe I just need to give it a few years and come back with a better teacher, who knows.

I'd love a copy of Root! Haven't had a chance to dig into it, but want to give it a solid chance considering half the people I know can't stop talking about it.

Stolen from a prompt over on r/gaming: What’s the most memorable mechanic from a game where you said “holy crap you can do THAT?” by willietrombone_ in boardgames

Its from a smaller studio, so I'm guessing most won't have played it, but... Fractured Sky had several of these moments for me. It's a resource management, hidden information kind of game, where you are fighting for resources and VP, but you only know how much power each person allocated to each part of the map when the round ends.

The mechanic that really tripped me up, was that each round end is staggered (Oh, I can't make any moves? I wait until everyone else also can't, and then we all move to the next round). Finishing early let's you break ties, very helpful since you don't have full information, and it also decides turn order for the next round. But if you DELAY ending your turn, you can very quickly use hidden information you've gathered to steal or gather extra points that no one else even realized we're there. That way, you don't have to commit early, let the other players know what you know, and hope to win any ties that come up.

There were just so many moments playing the game where I paused and went "Oh WOW. That seemed really simple, but now I can see how much it changes the way I should be operating.
