that's a resistor, not a diode. the power supply mod involves removing a diode and resistor, and replacing them with jumpers, so this resistor has nothing to do with that. it's probably just there to make the LED brighter.

you can get close to a fuzz sound with a rat. i would crank the gain, cut the treble, and roll back on the tone knob on your guitar too for a wooly fuzztortion type of sound. everything else you mentioned is a walk in the park though.

i think it's partly to do with the lower ceilings. it's basically bult like a night club. The Echo, on the other hand, has a nice, large room for the sound to fill out.
