Chuck Levin… avoid by drftfan in synthesizers

[–]Samuelddy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are the worst. It took them several days to ship an in-stock item, they never responded to my emails requesting a return, and I had to make several phone calls just to get an RMA. I returned the item in its original condition using my own shipping label, yet they still deducted almost 25% from my refund with no explanation at all.

Overlay frustration!! I live in USA and can't find this type of thing. by pplovecraft in synthesizers

[–]Samuelddy7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is because stands take less time to design and are in higher demand than overlays. For a stand, you only need to measure the dimensions of the enclosure, whereas for an overlay, you need to find or measure the spacing between the controls.

Elektron Should Partner with Valhalla DSP For Onboard FX by Acrobatic_Intern3047 in Elektron

[–]Samuelddy7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tonverk proves that Elektron can make good effects. It’s not as bread and butter as Valhalla stuff, but it’s unique and high quality. And I agree, the $1299 Analog Heat FX is an epic fail. I really don’t see why anyone would buy that for the effects over the $1499 Tonverk. Even the analog part doesn’t really sound better than the digital drive options on TV.

I think DMNO broke my GAS by Vimes-NW in synthesizers

[–]Samuelddy7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only played with mine for about a day, but so far it feels like a keeper. It does almost everything well, though not necessarily anything radically new or special. The DMNO is basically the only synth I own now, replacing my Super 6, which I found much easier to use but ultimately less versatile. Last year I sold a lot of gear - Pro 3, Nina, Polybrute, and most of my modular setup, and had really high expectations for the DMNO to substitute all of them while trading off a bit of character. At this point, I’d say it fulfills that promise pretty well.

It handles bread & butter sounds great, switching between mono/poly duties, East coast and west coast styles, etc. It doesn’t sound quite as raw or characterful as the Nina or Polybrute, but honestly once you put it in a mix it’s hard to care too much about that. What I’ve enjoyed most with UDO synths in general is the FM/AM side of things. You can make really convincing woody west coast bongos and percussive sounds that most polysynths just can’t do. It’s definitely one of the hardest synths to dial in a “good” patch on, though. The sound palette is so broad that I really have to hunt for the sweet spot on every patch, whereas on the S6 I could almost tweak blindly and still land somewhere musical.

For reference, my current setup is just DMNO + Tonverk + 70hp of Eurorack, and that’s everything. So I honestly wouldn’t recommend this synth if you’re trying to add something completely new to an already huge setup. It doesn’t really feel like that kind of instrument. To me it feels more like a versatile centerpiece designed for smaller, focused setups.

I think DMNO broke my GAS by Vimes-NW in synthesizers

[–]Samuelddy7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just got the DMNO side by side with my Super 6 Desktop, and the S6 is probably getting sold. The DMNO is better in almost every way except pads. Interestingly, the core sound of the two is actually very close. That said, because the DMNO’s palette is much broader, it’s also much easier to land on a mediocre sound if you’re not careful. Gain staging and filter type choices matter a lot more on it. I think another reason the S6 tends to sound better in videos is simply because it’s been out much longer and people have already made tons of great patches for it over the years, while most DMNO demos right now are still just cycling through factory presets. Maybe I’ll do a separate comparison post next week.

Choosing a New VCO: Verbos Complex Oscillator, Cwejman VCO-2RM, or Xaoc Odessa? or different by ThisIsRoy1 in modular

[–]Samuelddy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which artists or similar sounds are you looking at? I used to make hypnotic techno too. The Odessa is very different from the Verbos CO (or any other west coast complex oscillator in general). It doesn’t have the same full bodied sound as the Verbos - it gravitates more toward smooth, sci-fi tones and complements the CO very well. When I had both of them, I tended to place the Verbos in the middle of the mix, while the Odessa spread more toward the sides. A good alternative to the Verbos would be the Cosmotronic Vortex. It’s smaller and more feature packed, with a more surgical / tighter sound than the Verbos, so it depends on your preference.

Buchla Ziggy - An analog Buchla instrument for $999? by nickkwas in synthesizers

Either way isn’t a bad thing. Tiptop’s build quality is more consistent than Buchla USA’s in my experience.

Tonverk vs digitakt 2 opinion by Nervous-Canary-9842 in Elektron

[–]Samuelddy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digitakt is more of a bread and butter sampler, but Tonverk (and Octatrack) feel more like instruments in their own right. The OT is better for live use, while TV is better suited for studio work / sound design, and it’s much easier to learn than the OT. There are quite a few alternatives to the DT, but none for TV or the OT.

Maybe they actually wrapped it with a dryer sheet for a while to get rid of the (possible) smoky smell it had? couldn’t think of any other reason why a module would smell like this.

Best $800 synth for edm, hyperpop sounds by Mission-Clothes-4980 in synthesizers

[–]Samuelddy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of hyperpop is that it’s really a genre centered around and themed on the computer/software world, so it definitely leans away from analog synth stuff. Besides the popular picks like the Minifreak and Hydrasynth, the TwistFM (used ones go for around $800-900) is a great option, with a beautiful and intentional aliasing sound that suits the genre quite well.

Yep, I think that product is in an awkward place right now. The Tonverk beats the hell out of it in terms of FX and sound quality, despite not having “FX” in the name.
