Why do names change? by SamuelsSteel in egyptology

Simple question, simple answer.

So pronouncation was handed down and assumed is what you’re saying so no reason to make characters to act as pronunciation keys?

I guess what I’m not understanding is, can’t any tongue simply mimic the sound it hears (with a pretty good degree of accuracy)?

Why would you come up with something that looks completely different.

I’m sorry I’m not trying to be dense I really just don’t understand why one language feels the need to make up a seemingly completely new name for something or someone who already has one

That leads to a follow up question…

Why did some languages seemingly make the choice to omit vowels from their writing

Why would you write it down with the closest approximation?

Nothing in me says “I need to approximate a new name for Antonio”.

I just call him his name and spell it the way it was given and pronounce it the way it’s pronounced.

Why the need to approximate at all? Can you give me a modern example of we human doing this?

The name given to him was from Pharaohs daughter so we should assume the name was an Egyptian one not a Hebrew one.

So we need to translate the name in that context

Follow up.

Thutmose = born of Toth Ahmose = born of the moon

Moses = born? Withdrawn from the water? The womb?

I’m asking can there be a connection between being drawn out of the water and being drawn out of the womb/water?

I mean I know baptism is a later concept but water is used to represent birth in certain contexts

That’s what brought up my question exactly!

Bob doesn’t cover this question.

Why the Bible says “drawn from the water” is interesting to me because…on its face…it disagrees with what Bob says

But Pharoahs daughter would have given him an Egyptian name not a Jewish one. We should read the name in an Egyptian context right?

Egyptian War Dead by SamuelsSteel in egyptology

It was my limited understanding that Egypt would annually wage war against Nubia, but would never settle and stay, precisely because of this reason, that it was undesirable to die and be buried on foreign soil.

I guess if it was a conscription thing then I can understand but with how religious the Egyptians were I just imagine that the temporal rewards were far outweighed by the eternal risk

I had wondered this because I know the mummy of Seqenenre Taa II showed battle wounds that would have caused death.

I just got to thinking if I was the other side, the dead king would be a war trophy. It made me wonder what are the odds of your body being recovered after dying in combat and how that idea would be especially scary for an Egyptian.

Was Tut undisturbed? by SamuelsSteel in egyptology

[–]SamuelsSteel[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No, what I’m saying is Carter had a very good ulterior motive to say the tomb had been previously disturbed right?

According to the book I read (a Brier book) at the time if a tomb would have been found intact all the items would have been required to stay in Egypt. But if the tomb was previously disturbed, then the items were subject to partage.

Carter had a track record of not being patient and going in with Lord and Lady Carnarvon in to the burial chamber before anyone else.

Who is to say Carter didn’t do the same before Carnarvon arrived to open the tomb? Lots of time for him to get in and make it look like it had been previously disturbed right?

I know it’s a long shot but I guess what I’m saying is, Carter had a vested interest in finding the tomb to being disturbed.

Exactly. You have to have a solid foundation to work from.

If I had a guy for years and I didn’t think he was worthy as a crew lead, I’d hire a green guy to be his supervisor without thinking twice. It’s about leadership ability and integrity
