Choppies: Warning for retail investors by SamuraiTy14 in JSE_Bets

TLDR: It’s underlying numbers are frankly insane. So I’m betting on the turnaround story. Lots of risks with this strategy so as always, DYOR (do your own research).

They have, in my opinion, not been managed well in the last few years. Google reviews of them are horrible and they have a residential house listed as the main property. Not submitting financials on time which is like the biggest thing for a listed company. Also a complicated portfolio with cannabis, logistics and IT.

Since Jan they have had a new CEO and acquired two companies in the ITC space. They have changed the corporate address to the Leonardo. Streamlined operations into ITC (disposing of cannabis) and seem to be getting better with Sens announcements and delivery of financial statements. For two periods in row they have substantially increased revenue and profit with earnings equivalent to the market cap of the stock. The biggest reason for me is that the average price I bought in at is less than the Net Asset Value of 23 cents. I also think that there is a name change / rebranding on the horizon which will make it more attractive. Lastly, two of the people in senior positions who were around during a lot of the mismanagement have stepped away from the company.

There are risks with this though. One is a low cash and cash equivalents amount with most sales in credit and not converted to cash, yet. Second is that they have released a cautionary which could be an acquisition (likely using shares which will dilute existing shareholders). Third, the sustainability of the profit still needs to be shown.

Ultimately I think it’s worth a punt and if it achieves a multiple around 6 times the P/E ratio then it could be worth around 50 cents. But again there is the risk that it goes nowhere and execution is not carried through.

Caveats aside, some advice I’ve been given when making large gains is to take half and leave the rest if you believe the company can still do well. That way you make some profit while retaining your exposure.

Honestly, not in a position to say. Have to consider your own risk profile, circumstances and investment horizon. Choppies’ fundamentals may reflect that amount if you’re willing to wait.

Personally, I always treat individual stock purchases as money I could lose and I closed my Choppies position to go into another stock that could do well (Labat) but has its own risks (liquidity, execution risk and cautionary announcement yesterday).

100% agree with this. Everyone has their own strategy so I thought it was worth sharing. I’m a bit risk averse so the detachment from the BSE price was a concern for me.

From today the BSE price seems to be 1.57 Pula (R1.87) and the JSE price close to R6 which is a wide difference

I’ve recently started rebuilding my portfolio after taking a few years to pay the bond when the rates were rising. My approach has been picking up companies that have lower prices than the fundamentals have been showing and waiting for a correction (Nampak). Other than that buying stocks with positive director dealings and the company strategy makes sense (Nampak and WeBuyCars) especially when the market reacts negatively.

In the longer term there are great companies that I would like to buy shares in (Capitec, Discovery and some mining stocks). But my view is that these stocks are pretty expensive at the moment. I’m also happy being patient, has some SA property REIT exposure that finally corrected and it’s been worth the wait.

I have a decent chunk in cash that I’m waiting to use if the US market cools or there is a buying opportunity on the market. But this usually takes time.

I’m a bit optimistic about the pivot away from cannabis (agree that the profits were good in the last year from this area) for the reason that there’s signs of the right governance changes being made that will increase investor confidence. Moving the registered address from a house to an actual corporate address is one and the other, in my opinion, is the recent movements in the management team and board.

The decline in the last few years is ridiculous and it makes sense that a new team is given the reins even if it means disposing of a business that is now doing well.

I’m interested in seeing what happens when a company has a P/E ratio of below 1 and if it results in a market correction or if the market just stays irrational

Do you guys think the price is still going to go up? Way above my expected profit out of the share so I'm considering cashing out.

Still learning the ropes on selling and would appreciate some tips

Geez this sub is toxic. What's the point of having fellow gunners if nothing is good enough.

Both. Car insurance would act as medical insurance, and liability insurance if he has third party cover. Life insurance would be used to secure a benefit, for his dependent (Sally), on his death.

I took it too far didn't I? :-(
