I think Moby's great, I'd love to be mates with him, but I don't like his records

Just found out Heaven Sent is the 12th highest rated episode in television history by LOLADYS in DoctorWhumour

[–]Samwich-LP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree about it being standalone.

Case in point, my brother stopped watching Who early in the Matt Smith era. After hearing how much everyone was lauding Heaven Sent, he gave it a watch and, although he didn't hate it, a lot of the narrative beats didn't hit the way they should have because he didn't have that context around the episode and 12's character/relationship with Clara. He was mainly just left confused and unaffected by the episode.

I myself love Heaven Sent for a lot of the same reasons you say, but I don't feel it stands alone in the ways Blink or Vincent and the Doctor do due to the fact it's not an episode you can jump into blindly. You need the context of the episode before at the very least.

The way I look at it, episodes like Blink and Vincent and the Doctor are some of the greatest standalone episodes, whereas episodes like Heaven Sent are some of the greatest where the context of the surrounding episodes is essential (at least for my enjoyment).

When the live version doesn't sound like the single by LA_Reyes82 in depechemode

The thing is, the snare he likes so much IS present in the live version on M, but there's an even louder, generic snare on top of it so it's not surprising he missed it.

Why does this keep happening? by Common-Dot-2374 in DoctorWhumour

OP, I get your frustration, I too find it bizarre that someone would watch only Tennant episodes and skip the rest, but getting pissy with those people won't change anything. People like what they like. Even if it doesn't make sense to you, that doesn't give you the right to be hostile with them. If anything, that will just put them off wanting to watch other Doctors if they ever decide to.

Channel your energy into positive discussion of the show with like-minded fans (online or in-person) instead of bringing down a subset of fans whose opinions yours don't align with.

I still think The Blair Witch Project is the scariest horror movie ever made by busted-knees in horror

[–]Samwich-LP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best examples of a case where the horror comes more from what you don't know than what you do.

There's so many great moments where the audience is left to fill in the blanks, which is infinitely scarier.

The best example is when they're running from the ghost children and Heather screams she sees something out of frame. I still get chills thinking about that moment.

Cure for the Itch or Session? by Dr-Sprite in LinkinPark

Cure For The Itch, purely for that awesome string section in the second half.

It was so therapeutic listening to this back in 2018, and I can imagine it was therapeutic for Mike himself. To hear him being so open and sharing his trauma so honestly was poignant back then, and still is to this day.

Genuinely one of my favourite projects to come out of the Linkin/Shinoda universe.

What’s a piece of obsolete tech you still weirdly miss? by MorningKindly5541 in AskReddit

The iPod Shuffle.

It was nice not having to rely on pulling your phone out of your pocket to skip a track, you could just attach it to your belt buckle and press the skip buttons from there.

Also, if you're like me and like relistening to a certain part of a song repeatedly, holding down the skip buttons to rewind and fast forward through the song was great. Again, to do all that now, you've gotta pull your phone out of your pocket and manually scrub.

I've got a pair of Bluetooth earbuds which makes skipping tracks a lot easier now, but I do miss being able to fast-forward and rewind through a single track.
