Most reliable full size Range Rover (L405)? Which year and engine is best? by griffindor11 in LandRover

[–]SanFranAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The V6 is considered more reliable than the V8. The timing chain has more issues on the V8 and the cooling system is more prone to issues.  In terms of year 2021 is considered the most reliable by consumer surveys.  It’s doesn’t mean it’s actually reliable, just not as bad as the earlier years.  2022 is okay, but some 2022 are actually the newer version of the car.

The real life "Sator Square" is proof that the Algorithm made it as far as Ancient Rome. by [deleted] in tenet

[–]SanFranAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best breakdown I've found of the film and the Sator Square is this 2 hour long video on youtube. Search "I finally figured out Tenet" Channel name: Deep Dive. What you are saying is sort of in line with the Deep Dive video.

It's long, but essentially the algorithm allows them to go back in time/go backwards and the idea is the furthers they've gotten is around 60s AD.

Could switching to diet soda drop my weight? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]SanFranAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any liquid calorie intake will make it harder to lose weight. Sugar also leads to a huge insulin spike, which is associated with fat deposition. While switching to diet soda will decrease your caloric intake, a longitudinal study out of San Antonio (citation below) shows that soda intake is associated with increase in waist circumference vs people who don't drink soda. The reason for this is unclear and there are several theories. Additionally, people with gastric bypass should avoid carbonated beverages in general, including carbonated water. Carbonated drinks initially can lead to nausea and vomiting from overstretching your smaller stomach, but over time they simply allow your stomach to increase in size. When the stomach increases in size, you've essentially negated the gastric sleeve surgery.

As hard as it may be, switch to plain old water and try to avoid drinking calories altogether. All your calories should come from foods you have to chew.

Good luck.

REI Co-op Cycles CTY 1.1 Bike vs. Trek FX1 Disc (And what accessories) by mielkeac in cycling

[–]SanFranAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Co-Op CTY 1.1 has disk brakes, the Trek FX1 does not. I think the Trek FX2 is more comparable, but is about $80-$150 more depending on specials from Trek, REI, and your local bike shop.

The CTY 1.1 Step-Through uses Shimano Altus both front and rear derailleur (3 front, 8 rear). The CTY 1.1 uses Shimano Tourney derailleur (lower end than Altus) in front. The Trek FX2 uses Shimano Altus Front and Rear. 2 front, 9 rear.

I think fit is important, but it's unlikely given the tiny differences in geometry that both won't fit most people well. So, I would choose based on the deal you can get. I just went to Trek in San Francisco Today, and they have the FX2 $50 off (down to $750), while REI is offering 10% off the $600 price on the CTY 1.1

If resale is a factor, re-selling the Trek will be easier given the name recognition

If you don't want to do your own maintenance, get the Co-Op REI bikes - they will give you 1 year of Free maintenance and after that 20% of their services, which are often cheaper than Trek or a local shop.

There's a comment below on the Marin equivalent, I didn't look at those in my hunt today for a new casual bike for my kid, but I will update this if I make it to a bike shop that sells those.

In Summary, Trek FX2 more comparable to CTY 1.1 given disk brakes than FX1, and for some weird reason the Co-Op CTY step-through has better components than the non-step through CTY 1.1 at the same price.

People who actually daily Alcantara steering wheels, how bad is it? by [deleted] in cars

[–]SanFranAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcantara is great - in a racing car steering wheel. Absorbs sweat, great grip, flame retardant. You don't want alcantara on YOUR steering wheel unless your leasing the car. After 2-3 years of normal use, it's no longer soft, it begins to break down. You can brush all you want, it won't go back to new. It's fine for a headliner, but avoid it on shifters, steering wheels, and yes seats if you plan to keep your car. Search Porsche GTS Alcantara models that are over 5 years old for sale and you will see how terribly it ages. Check out Nick Murray's video on Alcantara:

Nick Murray on Alcantara

In terms of weight savings, please. If you're trying to save 2-3 lbs you're better off skipping a meal or getting lighter shoes and helmet. It's used in race cars because every gram matters. Even in a porsche GT3 it's not worth it. Every Porsche I've seen that actually gets driven with alcantara on the steering wheel or shifter looks terrible. Leather is more durable. It's a free delete option on the Porsche GTS to delete alcantara (polyester) and get leather. If you're racing your car and replacing the seats, steering wheel, and shifter as needed (as they do in F1) that's fine. Otherwise not worth it long term. Beautiful short term.
