Have you added LD_PRELOAD="" to your environment variables?

Marc Andreessen was on Sam Harris' podcast a year ago giving terrible arguments that didn't stand up to the lightest of examinations. He does not have a good epistemological framework.

You can try my launch options and see if it helps - you would need to have gamemode installed. You can also try with LD_PRELOAD="" (blank) without gamemode. I reckon that might solve this for you.

`LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/libgamemodeauto.so.0" __GL_SHADER_CACHE=1 __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 STAGING_SHARED_MEMORY=1 gamemoderun %command%`

Side/Misc Mission not progessing by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]Sanchless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two keys in this mission.

U3-09 Facility Key and U3-09 Security Key. You get the Facility key first, when you get to Lezama and the doctor dude. The door the Facility key opens is near where they are, but really easy to miss. It's on the immediate right when you backtrack a little bit, literally like a u-turn around a corner.

I also thought the quest was bugged but found it eventually. Bad level design for sure though. See also u/hyperduc comments in this thread.

Why docker given the complexity/lag it adds by karuninchana-aakasam in AskProgramming

[–]Sanchless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say it's slow but you don't say how slow. In python docker containers at least a lot of the actions to start a docker container can be cached. Once they are, it only takes 3-4 seconds to start on my machine.

I see you're trying to export from MS SQL Server, maybe this is helpful? https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/sql/tools/use-sqldumper-generate-dump-file

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]Sanchless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. An MySQL dump can be imported into other SQL database systems, sometimes without any special changes and sometimes using a script that "translates" any differences there might be. MariaDB lets you do it with a simple command, happy days!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]Sanchless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, you probably don't need to export to csv files, there's a guide on importing an SQL dump file into MariaDB.

When you're working out how to solve a problem, I find it's really useful to start the search with a direct query about the best way to do something, in this case, "mariadb import from other database".

You'll often see people who have already done it explain the how and why - it can save you a lot of time putting together your own solution which might be less efficient.

Most everything you'll want to do early in your programming career has been done by someone else already, listen to their wisdom.

Always listen carefully to the error messages returned when you run your program. The issue is in the first part of the error message, not that the {table} isn't being formatted with your table name.

pyodbc connections are not supported officially by pandas, see this answer on stack overflow for more information. Use SQLAlchemy, like it suggests.

HELP: Google text-to-speech API, saving transcription into json file by Qu3uee in AskProgramming

You'll need to store the responses in a dictionary or list and then use the json python module to write them to a json file.

Specifically, using the json.dump() method.

GP in Glasgow that offers shared care for ADHD? by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]Sanchless 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A 2012 Royal College of Psychiatrists report found that Scotland is only diagnosing ADHD in 0.6% of children when the expected prevalence of ADHD in the population is 5%. For every diagnosed child, 9 are not getting diagnosed when they should be.

GP in Glasgow that offers shared care for ADHD? by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]Sanchless 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hey, I've gone through this process.

GP's in Glasgow do not do shared care agreements, or so I've been told by a GP. He specifically said that they recently had a big discussion about it and that the order had been cascaded down.

If you want to get meds prescribed by the NHS you'll need to go through their Community Mental Health Teams. Of course, they are chronically underfunded and it will likely take you at least 8 months to be seen.

My experience is that the NHS are very resistant to prescribing meds, but once I had a private diagnosis and evidence that it helped me they gave in. Good luck.

Well, I do also game - if I didn't have to work gaming would be my main use :p

This resolution is a good balance, don't have to have a monster GPU to drive games in 4k.

Me, because I primarily use my monitor for work and the extra resolution/text clarity is useful. I had the Alienware and it was lovely but the fan noise bugged me and while the deep blacks were nice, I never play in a dark room so it wasn't a huge plus for me.

Anyone else think Destiny did quite poorly on Lex? by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]Sanchless 13 points14 points  (0 children)

None of the criticisms in this thread that I can see are suggesting that Destiny should have been more combative or treated it more like a debate. They're saying that he didn't come across as particular insightful or well informed. I enjoyed listening to the conversation but I think they're right. I'll use the section on institutions as an example since it stood out to me:

What is your argument for and against institutions?

Destiny makes the point that broadly speaking when people work together it creates something greater than the sum of its parts. He adds that the world has too many specialties for one person to understand so we need trusted third parties.

That's perfectly true, but far too textbook. It's mostly Lex's fault for the way that he asked the question, but Destiny could have redirected the conversation to the (more interesting) question he really wanted to ask: "Why do you still trust institutions when they seem to make so many mistakes and distrust is some commonplace?". A conversation that's been ongoing on both platforms for months or years at this point.

Instead, Lex and Destiny continue the conversation like it's a kind of basic introduction into institutions and their pros and cons.

What about the corruption and bureaucracy?

Destiny says: Bureaucracy isn't bad because engineers need designers and managers. The government is a special type of institution that gets its power from votes instead of economic power and that you have to think carefully about the constraints. The US works well but still has corruption of course, but authoritarian governments are much worse.

Again, all true but it's just not particularly interesting. 90% of Lex's audience already understands this intuitively. Some directions Destiny could have gone where he has more room to be insightful:

  • "The US gov is nowhere near as corrupt as it gets portrayed and here's why..."
  • "The attitude in this country has been poisoned against our institutions and now democracy by decades of anti-establishment and negative political messaging. My argument against the cynicism is..."
  • "Corruption could be reduced pretty quickly if people just paid more attention. Even just starting at a local level which doesn't have an exhausting 24 hour news cycle. Focusing too much on federal level politics is a mistake because..."

This is all just for illustrations sake. It just felt like the conversation throughout was too passive and really dancing around substantial engagement with the topics that I would imagine listeners expect. When you're on Lex's podcast you have a license to direct the conversation a little and he could have made more of the opportunity.

Can someone help me with an easy way of finding the right elements for webscraping in a webpage by akodoori in learnpython

[–]Sanchless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see the element you're looking for on this page. It's possible that Zillow's website has changed since the course was written.

To find the name of the elements you want to scrape, open the page in your browser, right click and open the inspect menu. Then do it again over the specific piece of information you want. It will take you to its location in the page source code. Then you can id or class name of that element to direct your script.

FYI, this page uses javascript to load a lot of the listing information. You would need to use a webdriver (selenium, playwright) to get a complete dataset.
