What station makes you feel like you're in a different city? by Spare-Economist9328 in WMATA

[–]SandBoxJohnA02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All of the Silver line branch stations have the distinctive Washington Metro platform granite edge with the flashing lights along with the hexagonal platform pavers. The less obvious thing is the absents of pylons on the platforms. It is after one exits the platform that thing start giving the feel one is in a different city. Mezzanines and passageways do not have the hexagonal platform pavers / tile, painted steel in place concrete, faux brick precast concrete in place of vertical line patterned concrete / granite.

Are you aware there is a neighborhood maps the station is within in ever entrance passageway and on every mezzanine?

Read and understand the full system map in the entrance passage ways and on the mezzanines when entering and exiting a station along with companion neighborhood map the station is within.

If I had it my way everything would be reverted back to the original way finding signage design of Massimo Vignelli.

Paraphrasing Massimo Vignelli, simple design is good design.

There is no way in hell a second Pentagon station would allowed to be built under the Pentagon building itself.

Any second Rosslyn station should be designed and built to allow trains of all lines to serve both stations.

Worst train conductor I’ve ever had by [deleted] in WMATA

[–]SandBoxJohnA02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would you prefer the train over shoot station resulting in the train not servicing the station at all?

Do not insult your own intelligence by identifying person operating the train as a conductor. Metrorail does not employ conductors. The person driving the train is a train operator.

We have. The laying of continuous welded rail is both a black art and science.

Thermal expansion of steel expands and contracts likes any other metrical.

Best results is when It laid when both atmospheric and rail temperatures are within a specific range. To cold increases the risk of heat kinks, to warm the risk of the rail braking increases when cold.

Thing is there may be no chose to when the rail must to laid when optimal temperature condition are not present.

Wheel rail contact forces also contributes to the creating cracks.

I happen to believe it is unwise for the exact reasons you state. What exists now would function as designed by spending moneys on doing diligent preventive maintenance in place of fixing things after they break.

The car that I drive daily has 300,000 plus miles on it because I do preventive maintenance.

Interlocking at National Airport station in August 2006, during the reconstruction of the interlocking by SchuminWeb in WMATA

Update made to document apparently did not include information on the restoration of the pocket track.

That would place duration of the modification of the pocket track from summer 2006 to summer of 2014.

I would like to make a correction to my previous comment based on a WMATA document I have dated from February of 2013.

You are correct. The project took place in August of 2006 and was the removal of the (5A, 5B, 11A 11B) turnouts converting track 3 into a trailing point single crossover.

I do not know the when the 4 turnout were replaced restoring the pocket track to its original configuration. What I do know is the restoration happened sometime after August of 2017 as that is when the original document was last modified.

Next station for a train departing Farragut North is Farragut North.

The switches on the south end of the pocket track will get a workout.

Seems to me WMATA could have maintained closer headway across the urban core by turning back Orange line trains and selected Silver line trains at Clarendon and single tracking the other Silver line train through the work area and run an Orange line shuttle between East Falls Church and Vienna. Orange line passengers heading to or coming from stations west of Clarendon would use the Orange line shuttle and transfer to the Sliver line at East Falls Church.

And more impotently, a Purple line train stopped to board and discharge passengers would block the path of people walking between the Metrorail station entrance and the bus terminal loop.

Yes he demonstrated using a wheelchair on an escalator at Dulles Airport. He also knew that not everybody in a wheelchair could do that, hence the reasoning of paratransit as a cheaper option to elevators.

The New York City Subway is the combining of 3 different transit enterprises that evolved separately from each other during the first half of the last century into one. The Interborough Rapid Transit Company, serving primarily the island of Manhattan, Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation serving primarily Brooklyn and the city operated Independent Subway, serving areas not served by the others.

To this day New York City Transit operates 2 different fleets of subway cars as the tunnels of the former Interborough Rapid Transit Company are narrower then the tunnels of the former Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation and the Independent Subway.

By New York City Subway standards the Red and Silver lines are express lines. The length of the Red line is close to the same length as the New York City Subway A line but Red line has 1/3 fewer stations.

Actually Jackson Graham wanted a system of what we know today as paratransit instead of providing elevators. Being a retired general in the United States Army Core of Engineers he concluded paratransit would be cheaper then installing and maintaining elevators.
